Congratulations Tom and Tucker-newly certified service dog team through Operation SaveAVet SaveAPet program of Franklin County Veterans Affairs.

You have been training, practicing, and working together since Tucker was 2 months old. You recently completed the program with Tucker just being over two years old.

Becoming a certified service dog in our program takes the right temperament plus training. Training in manners, obedience, completing public access, and developing task skills. All this is done over time and after two years of age because maturing for the dog is also important.

A service dog does not have to be certified but all service dogs need a sound, non-reactive temperament, manners, obedience and taught tasks that help their handler.

If you are a veteran in Franklin County and thinking a service dog could benefit you, please contact us.

If you are not a veteran, but feel a service dog might benefit you or have questions about service dogs please contact us. We do not have trained service dogs on the shelf waiting to distribute, but we can work with you to help you find a dog with the right temperament and together we can train.

Eve earned her first Dock diving title: DJ = Dock Junior.
We started Dock diving last summer. She didn’t know how to use the dock, so her first jump was 4’9”. Now we are learning how to play the game and getting better. Her best jump this weekend was 14’3”. We are having fun and making progress. It’s a great sport in this kind of weather!

Service Therapy Alert Training: Dogs with a job

Our goal at STAT is to train dogs with high level skills in order to full-fill their job, whether that is as a Service Dog, Therapy Dog, or Alert Dog. (We will use the term Assistant Dog referring to any of those jobs.) At STAT, we will help develop, train, and certify dogs that pass all 4 levels of our program.

These Levels are: Level T. Temperament; Level 1. Foundation and Home Skills; Level 2. Community and Public Access; Level 3. Service Tasks.

Level T is our Temperament qualification. The first criteria for a successful Assistant dog is its temperament. The appropriate temperament for an Assistant Dog is one that is alert, but non-reactive to its environment, people or other animals. With a structured environment, training, and maturing many dogs can achieve Level T.

The next 3 Levels of our program are related to training. Level 1. Foundation and Home Skills are developing good manners and basic obedience. Level 2. Community and Public Access is continuing to develop obedience skills outside the home environment. Building attention and focus under distractions. Level 3. Service Tasks is teaching the dogs to retrieve items for owners, open doors, turn on switches, or alert to physical or emotional needs.
