Meet one of our famous boarders Xia❤️

Today we kick off our weekly series called Fido Fridays, where we put a spotlight on our animal therapy program!

Today, we meet Xia and John Robeson.

Here's what John says he and Xia love most about volunteering: "Volunteering gives me the opportunity to get out and meet many new people, and Xia seems to just put a smile on almost everyone's face when they see her. As they meet her and give her love, many of them enjoy sharing stories about their pets, either past or present. It gives me some peace of mind knowing that we were able to relieve a little stress from someone's day and make them smile, even if only for a few moments, at a time when they are not having a good day. I also want to thank the entire staff at the hospital and cancer center. Although we sometimes find ourselves in the way of them as they do their jobs, they are always very welcoming and happy to see us."

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Our shelter is beyond full. Every cat and dog kennel is occupied, and we have several cats and dogs residing in wire dog crates. We need help with morning cleaning, as we are also short staffed. If anyone is available in the mornings (we start at 7:00am) to help with dishes, laundry, and cleaning kennels and cages, we would be so appreciative. We have 14 employees total here at AHS, and a lot of things beyond just daily cleaning that we need to get done. Volunteer help with the morning cleaning will free up staff to process adoption applications more quickly to hopefully relieve some of the overwhelm.

We also just wanted to address a couple things:
1) Dogs who have been with us 3+ months have waived adoption fees. That is almost 20 dogs that have been patiently waiting for their forever home.

2) Kittens are 2 for 1 ($79.50) and cats 7+ months are by monetary donation.

3) We want to keep pets in their homes. If you are struggling to feed your pet, please reach out to us. We can provide food.

4) We are not contracted with any of the municipalities we serve, despite many repeated attempts. Our funding is exclusively donations from our supporters and grants as we are able to get them. Despite this, there is no other shelter in the area that will accept stray dogs from Southern Franklin County. We want them to have a safe place, but we have absolutely no more room. We do our best to accept everything we can, but at this time, we just can't. Consider reaching out to your local municipalities to support funding for your local shelter.

5) Yes, we are a no-kill shelter. We do everything we can to give every animal that comes to us a chance. For the past 3 years we have maintained a save rate of 94%. Euthanasia is reserved for medical cases that cannot be treated or behavior that is not safe to put back into the community. Save rate also includes animals that pass on their own, which is often kittens too young to survive in an overcrowded shelter despite our best efforts. We know our no-kill status makes others want to bring their animals to our shelter when they can no longer care for them. As much as we want to help all animals, we must put our service area animals first. If you are out of our service area of Southern Franklin County PA, we encourage you to support your local shelters, as funding goes a long way to save more lives, and to encourage them to enact policies to promote no-kill. We worked with Best Friends Animal Society to do so, and they are always happy to work with shelters looking to increase life-saving. The more overwhelmed we are, the higher chance the animals in our care will deteriorate medically or behaviorally because we do not have the time, space, or staff to give every animal the amount of time they deserve. We do not want to have to make those hard choices for animals that deserve a chance.

6) Every animal in our care can be fostered. This frees up space, allowing staff more time to give to the animals still in our care.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call or email at [email protected]. Please consider helping in some way. Thank you so much for your continued support.
