Day 8 of Christmas Critters 🎄🐾⛄️

The Grey Fox 😍🦊

Gray foxes are unique in the canid family. They are one of two species of canid that can climb trees. They have rotating wrists and semi-retractable claws that help them climb up high to den, forage, or escape predators. However, this escape method can be risky these foxes, as they are not great at climbing down, and can easily injure themselves in the process!

This is a young female fox that North Country Wild Care took care of while she healed from a broken leg. ❤️

Please remember that regardless of how cute these critters may be, they are wildlife and can be dangerous. So, if you or someone you know sees a fox that appears to be in distress, please leave them be and contact North Country Wild Care for their help. 🙌

Day 7 of 12 😁🎄🐾

Can anyone guess what our day 7 critter is⁉️......

If you guessed Goose, you are correct! 🥳
The image shown is the picture of a baby Canadian Goose otherwise known as a goslings.

Canada Geese are one of our most abundant North American waterfowl species. Goslings can learn to swim within one day of being born. As they get older, they sometimes form groups with other goslings called gang broods. The gang brood travels and feeds together under the watchful eyes of the parent geese.

The V-pattern that Geese fly in while migrating actually has a purpose. It helps them maintain their energy and improves communication. Each bird flies above the bird in front of them to reduce wind resistance. And being able to see the other birds aids overall coordination. When the lead bird gets tired, it moves to the back of the group for a much-deserved rest.

Day Seven: Pets as Gifts
Pets deserve thoughtful, lifelong homes.

Avoid surprises: Instead of gifting a pet, give a shelter gift certificate or a pet care book. Let families choose when they’re ready.

Day 6 of Christmas Critters 😍
(Tell me this little baby is not the cutest little critter! 💁‍♀️)

The Raccoon 🦝

As seen in the photo.. raccoons have five toes on their front and back paws. Their fore paws are particularly dexterous and actually look and work like human hands. They are able to use their finger-like toes to hold and manipulate food, along with a wide range of objects lids, jars, and doorknobs. Raccoons can also rotate their hind feet backwards to help them climb down trees head-first. 😯😯😯

As most of us know, raccoons are one of the mammal species that can catch and transmit rabies but did you know that they can also carry and transmit canine distemper and leptospirosis?

So as cute as they look, please remember they are wild animals and to leave them be, especially if they are acting strange during the day time!

***If you see or need assistance with encountering a wild animal like a racoon, that you think may need help..... Please contact the North Country Wild Care! After all they are the professionals 💁‍♀️🥰****

Christmas Critter Day 5: The Raven 🐦‍⬛
Ravens gesture to communicate

From holding up objects of interest (typically a male mating ritual to lure a female) to “pointing” at things with their beaks, ravens have been elevated to a level of communication that, until recently, was observed solely in humans and apes.

Christmas Critter 4 of 12 🎅🦌

Fawns (White tailed deer) -

Often good-hearted humans assume that because a fawn is alone it must be an orphan, leading to numerous fawn “kidnappings” each year. But the truth is a newborn fawn spends its first weeks mostly alone and in hiding; it interacts with the mother doe only twice a day and nurses 2 or 3 times.

Christmas Critter Day 2 🎄

Eastern Cottontail 🐇

A female rabbit will create a nest called a "form" to conceal and care for her young. Forms are created in shallow recessions in the earth and are covered by grass, leaves, weeds etc. Mother's feed baby rabbits only twice a day—at dawn and dusk. Baby rabbits found alone in a nest are usually not orphans and should be left where they are. Baby rabbits leave the nest when they're 3 weeks old and about the size of a chipmunk. If you find a chipmunk-sized but fully-furred rabbit with eyes open, ears erect and the ability to hop, they are meant to be on their own. As small and helpless as they may look, they are not an orphan and don’t need any help. 🩷
