Not every day is sunny in cat rescue. Miss Kitty came to us in February after her owner passed away, and family couldn’t take her. At 5 years old, vaccinated, and super sweet, we thought she’d be easy to re-home. 😺
After arrival, we noticed she needed a dental cleaning, which we arranged with a vet partner. All seemed well until her foster saw she’d swollen up last Tuesday. A vet visit Wednesday revealed subcutaneous emphysema—air trapped under her skin—and crepitus in her fat tissues, confirmed by x-rays. 😿
By Friday, the condition seemed stable with treatment. But Monday night, Miss Kitty worsened, drooling and struggling to swallow. We rushed her to an emergency vet, where they found a mass under her tongue, likely squamous cell carcinoma, a fast-growing cancer. It was blocking her ability to eat. The kindest choice was to let her cross the rainbow bridge to reunite with her momma. 🌈🙏
Why wasn’t the mass caught earlier? Its location made it hard to detect during her dental or exams, which focused on finding a chest injury causing the air buildup. We now suspect micro-tears from cancer metastasis were the cause. 😔
Cases like Miss Kitty’s show why your donations matter. They support “fospice” cats—those in hospice foster care—and others needing extensive medical care or surgery before finding forever homes. Your gifts provide food, vet care, and love, helping cats transition to their next chapter. Thank you for being our partners in care! ❤️🐾
