Our Assistant Practice Manager brought Oliver in last night to be seen due to discomfort in his paw. After Dr. Marquart did her physical exam, she found that Oliver had cracked his dew claw right by the nail bed. Oliver was given some pain meds and Lidocaine to numb the area. Dr. Marquart then clipped the whole nail off so it could start to repair itself. Oliver received lots of love and compassion from the staff and Dr. Marquart during his procedure. They did their best to ensure he was comfortable and not too stressed. A few days with a bandage and pain meds will make Oliver feel better quickly!

Injured nails are a common injury we see daily at Frontier Veterinary Urgent Care. Torn nails can be very painful and bleed considerably if the quick, central collection of blood vessels and nerves is exposed.

Keep your dog's nails trimmed to avoid a broken nail. Short nails are less likely to snag. If you are uncomfortable doing it yourself, you can schedule an appointment with your primary veterinary clinic or groomer. Regular bathing and exercise also help keep dogs' nails in good shape.

If you think your dog may have an injured nail and may need medical assistance, please call us at 262-226-2055. Frontier Veterinary Urgent Care is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Today, we pause to remember and honor those affected by the tragic events of September 11, 2001. On this day, we reflect on the resilience and unity that emerged from such a challenging time.

In the spirit of compassion and care that defines our field, we extend our thoughts to all who were impacted by this day and to those who continue to support and heal in its wake. As veterinarians, we understand the profound bond between people and their pets, and we recognize the strength and solace that animals can provide during difficult times.

May we all continue to support one another with empathy and kindness, honoring the spirit of resilience and community that defines us.

Toxin Ingestion? Why do we ask you to call the Pet Poison Helpline?

If your pet ingests a toxic substance, chemical, or food, our Frontier Vet Urgent Care team may ask you to call the Pet Poison Helpline. This service, available round the clock, every day of the year, provides veterinary toxicology guidance and support. We often get asked why we have them call. We want you to know that our intention in recommending the helpline is to provide the fastest and most accurate treatment for your pet.

1. The Pet Poison Helpline is staffed by veterinary toxicologists. While our team is skilled in emergency medicine, we don't have a dedicated toxin specialist on staff. The Pet Poison Helpline provides specialized knowledge, and it is the fastest way to receive expert, individualized guidance on your pet's care.

2. Rapid and expert triage for your pet's case before you leave home. In some cases, your pet's ingestion may not be harmful. However, toxicities depend on many variables, including pet weight, consumed amount, brand, or active ingredient. By first calling the Pet Poison Helpline, your pet's case will be triaged to determine if medical attention is needed, potentially saving you an unnecessary trip and the time and cost of visiting us.

3. Calling the Pet Poison Helpline may be more cost-effective. We are sensitive to our client's financial and emotional needs. While the Pet Poison Helpline does charge a fee, if the toxicologist decides that your pet does not need veterinary attention, you will save the cost of $165, a visit at Frontier Veterinary Urgent Care.

4. Faster answers about your pet's case. Sometimes we have limited staff handling multiple cases that need varying levels of care. To provide every patient in our hospital with the best possible care, our veterinarians are not available to research toxicology cases, which can be complex and multifaceted. Simply determining what brand types and amounts of a given food, medication, household item, or plant are toxic or not can take a veterinarian a great deal of time. The Pet Poison Helpline specialists have access to references, databases, and their own clinical expertise, leading to a faster, more detailed response.

5. Expert treatment plan advice for your pet. If necessary, the Pet Poison Helpline veterinarians will make follow-up calls directly to your pet's veterinarians at Frontier Vet Urgent Care or your regular veterinarian to provide specific treatment recommendations and advice. This expedites your pet's care by providing expert insight and a wealth of information and eliminating time-consuming research.

Your pet's care is our priority. When clients contact the Pet Poison Helpline, it ensures prompt and accurate treatment for all our patients. This minimizes negative outcomes and unwanted complications.

If you know or suspect your pet has been exposed to a toxin, call the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. For all other emergencies, please contact Frontier Vet Urgent Care at 262-226-2055.

06/27/2024

We understand it can be stressful when your pet is not feeling well or is injured. Taking them to urgent care can sound overwhelming, and you may not know what to expect. Frontier Veterinary Urgent Care is a walk-in facility. We treat our patients on a first-come, first-served basis and in order of urgency. Below is what you can expect if you need to bring your pet in to be seen.

Rest assured, our highly trained technicians, assistants, and client service representatives are adept at triaging patients on arrival to determine their level of stability.

A client service representative will greet you at the front desk and get you checked in. The check-in process includes obtaining the owner's and patient's information and entering it into our system. They will also ask you what symptoms your pet is having, for how long, etc., so they can explain why you are here today to the team.

Once your pet is checked in, they will let the assistants and technicians know and update you with the current wait time.

A technician or assistant will come and take a more detailed history of your pet and perform a triage exam. The technician or assistant will then refer the case to a doctor.

When the doctor is ready to see your pet, they will perform a physical exam. Based on the doctor's assessment, diagnostics may be recommended to rule out causes for your pet's current or potential future clinical signs. Diagnostics could include bloodwork, x-rays, urinalysis, etc. Our staff will only be able to perform diagnostics with your approval first.

Once a treatment plan has been agreed on, the technician or assistant will take your pet to our treatment area to perform diagnostics or administer medications. The doctor will provide written take-home instructions. These will recap everything that was discussed, what to watch for at home, instructions for medications we are sending home, and any follow-up care that may be needed.

Our team will send the completed medical record to your primary veterinarian. If you have more questions or concerns after your visit, you can always call and speak to our staff when we are open. We are open seven days a week, 10am—10pm. If you think your pet may need to be seen, please call 262-226-2055.

Do you know dogs can get heatstroke?

With warm weather coming our way, here are symptoms you should look out for.

- Excessive panting
- Excessive drooling
- Increased respiratory effort
- Elevated heart rate
- Seizures
- Loss of consciousness

If you notice your dog exhibiting mild symptoms of heatstroke, such as excessive panting or drooling, you can try to cool them down by providing cool, fresh water and a cool, dark place to rest. However, if the symptoms worsen to a moderate or severe level, it's crucial to seek immediate professional help from an urgent care or emergency vet.

Frontier Veterinary Urgent Care is open 7 days a week, 10a-10p for your pets urgent needs.

Koi is an 8-week-old female kitten who visited us because she got a hold of some lilies. She presented with signs of drooling, ataxia, and lethargy.

All parts of Lilies are toxic (including the water they sit in) for cats. Early signs of lily toxicity in cats include decreased activity level, drooling, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Lilies can cause damage to the kidneys, which can cause increased urination and dehydration.

Treatment for Lily toxicity can include bloodwork, sq fluids, and hospitalization for a couple of days to get fluid support and monitor kidney values.

Since Koi's first blood work results returned normal, her parents decided to monitor her at home and bring her back in the next two days to recheck her bloodwork.

Koi got some snuggles from our new CSR, Sue, while we waited for her bloodwork results. Koi, we recommend staying away from the pretty flowers. We hope you feel better soon! ❤

The staff at Frontier Veterinary Urgent Care wants to wish our clients, patients, and community a Hoppy Easter. We hope everyone gets to spend time with their families. Please take a moment to review the below safety tips. These tips will help provide guidance on how to avoid having a sick pet during the holiday weekend.

1. Keep chocolate and candy away from pets: Candy and chocolate can be toxic for our pets and can cause serious health issues such as seizures and vomiting.
2. Try to avoid using easter grass: Ingestion of these synthetic strings can lead to serious health issues for both cats and dogs. The grass can potentially cause an intestinal blockage.
3. Remember some plants and decorative items can be hazardous to your pet's health: Lilies are poisonous to cats and cause severe kidney damage. Tulips and daffodils can also cause stomach upset if digested. Make sure decorations are securely fastened to avoid falling over if bumped or played with by curious paws.
4. Limit table scraps and human food: Common Easter foods like ham and turkey, are high in fat and salt, which can lead to digestive issues. Some human foods like onions and garlic can be highly toxic to pets. Consider giving them a small amount of cooked lean meat or vegetables as a special treat instead of table scraps.
5. Create a safe and quiet space: Increased amount of noise and activity can overwhelm your pets and lead to anxiety and stress. To help ease their discomfort, have a quiet and safe place where they can retreat to if needed.

Have a happy and safe Easter celebration with your human and furry family members!🐰🐣

02/23/2024

Millie and Barb were seen tonight for signs concerning for possible allergic reactions. One of the causes for allergic reactions that we see are secondary to vaccine administration. Minor allergic reactions in our pets present as facial swelling and hives. More concerning signs of anaphylaxis can be seen as vomiting, diarrhea and collapse. Fortunately, Barb was not having a vaccine reaction but experiencing side effects of the vaccine she received today including lethargy, decreased appetite and pain at the injection site. Millie, however, WAS experiencing an allergic reaction suspected to be due to peanut butter. She was given injectable medications to help through the reaction. If you are concerned your pet may be experiencing any of these signs, we recommend seeking immediate medical attention.
We expect both of these young ladies to make a full recovery tonight! Get well soon Millie and Barb! ❤️🐾

02/21/2024

One of the most common cases we see come in through urgent care is for dogs showing lameness or discomfort in their limbs.

Symptoms you may observe are swelling or heat in the affected limb, whimpering and vocalizing due to pain, changes in behavior, and licking or biting at a specific area, indicating pain or discomfort.

Lameness can develop for many reasons. The most common reasons are injuries and trauma, joint disease, infectious disease, and nerve disorders.

How does the staff at Frontier Vet Urgent Care pinpoint the cause?
The first step is to perform an in-depth physical examination. We may then recommend advanced imaging such as x-rays, ultrasounds, or a CT Scan to aid in determining a precise diagnosis. Another recommendation may be laboratory diagnostics such as blood work, urinalysis, and sometimes tissue biopsies. These tests could aid in detecting inflammation, and infection, or provide insight into conditions such as Lyme disease. If a nerve disorder was suspected we would likely refer your pet to a neurology specialist for a more in-depth neurological evaluation.

After our physical evaluation and diagnostics are completed, our team or your referring veterinarian will develop a treatment plan based on your dog's specific condition. This plan may include pain management, physical therapy, surgical interventions, and/or dietary and lifestyle modifications.

Treatment for canine lameness often involves ongoing monitoring and may include adjustments to the treatment plan as needed. Regular follow-ups allow your vet to track the dog's progress and make necessary modifications to ensure optimal recovery.

If you would like more information regarding canine lameness, please go to our website and read our blog.

For any concerns about your dog's mobility or to seek urgent care, please call us at 262-226-2055.

This handsome boy is Major. He is a 9 year old German Shephard Mix. Major's family brought him in to see us because he kept having bloody noses. On physical exam it was noticed he has an ulcer on his nasal philtrum. The nasal philtrum is the pigmented, hairless, top surface of the external part of the nose. His family will be following up with their primary veterinarian to complete a biopsy. To help Major stay comfortable in the mean time, our doctor sent home some Gabapentin. She also had sent home Epinephrine to help stop the bleeding for future bloody noses in the mean time. Major received some good back rubs from our technical supervisor Jermaine while he was with us. We wish you the best of luck Major!🐾💚
