Pet safety and info for July 4th

Did you know that statistics show that more dogs are lost over the 4th of July holiday than any other time of the year? Dogs who fear loud sounds, especially those with a phobia of thunderstorms should stay indoors. Try to create a calm environment by making sure they stay indoors and in an enclosed room, if possible. If you allow your dog outside, be sure that your gates or fence are secure or that your pet stays on a leash.

From personal experience, I have found that a product called 'Sileo' (https://www.zoetisus.com/content/_assets/docs/Petcare/Started-with-SILEO-One-pager.pdf) , (click the link for more info) which is used in dogs to reduce acute anxiety and fear associated with noise, is very effective. It is a veterinary medicine that contains dexmedetomidine hydrochloride and is available as a gel applied to the lining of the mouth. Sileo requires a prescription and if you can get it from Chewy, they will contact your vet to approve the medication.

Off-Leash Skills and Parks classes added!

Get more enjoyment and less stress from your dog, whether or not you desire to take your dog off-leash or not, our off-leash skills classes will teach you how NOT to depend on your leash for more focus and good behavior!

And of course our Parks and Outings Series is back for the summer!
Our CGC (Canine Good Citizen) classes teach all the basics of good social behavior, properly greeting humans and other dogs in a calm and relaxed manner. It is the basis of therapy and service dog training as well.

Parks and Outings Class is back!

A PawSessions favorite is back for spring and summer.. no worries, if the classes are full, we will be adding new classes as these fill up! Just email us that you would like to join in and give us a preferred day (morning or afternoon) and we will do what we can to schedule additional classes.

Before we book an evaluation, we need to get some basic information about your dog. Anyone interested in this offer must call us at the facility so we can have a short discussion about your dog and how we can help.These evaluations are for any dog or puppy, and especially those who are exhibiting mild to moderate dog reactivity or mild behavioral problems. If your dog has severe reactivity to dogs or humans or severe behavioral problems such as guarding, this offer does not apply but we are happy to discuss how we can help and we do charge an additional fee. We are here to help ALL dogs and are honest in our evaluations because we want the best for you and your best friend.

Happy Thanksgiving to our PawSessions Pups and Families!

PawSessions will be closed from Thursday, Nov. 23rd through Sunday, Nov. 26th

We will re-open for business as usual on Monday, Nov. 27th!

Please be aware...

An unknown illness in dogs is spreading in the US. It starts with a cough, and additional signs or symptoms may be discharge of the eyes and nose. If your dog is experiencing any of these symptoms, or you just feel they are off, please take them to your vet for a check.

As far as we know, the virus has not yet reached New York. Rest assured that we clean and disinfect our facility daily, and are taking proper precautions. However, there is always risk involved. Although we do not require vaccinations for our training classes, we strongly recommend that you make sure that your dog is up to date on all vaccinations, including and especially the bordatella vaccine that protects against kennel cough. Happy Fall Everyone!

Our Fun-Gility (https://www.pawsessions.com/fun-gility-and-tricks) class is back for the fall/winter season! We would like to warmly welcome our new team member, Nicole Baez, who being experienced in this field of training will be our instructor. Join us for some fun with your dog and learn tricks and skills that will impress your friends!

Our Canine Good Citizen (CGC) (https://www.pawsessions.com/akc-canine-good-citizen-classes) classes are in full swing to polish up our dog's manners for the holidays! These classes are being taught by Kourtney, being through all service dog training, is the girl who knows her stuff as far as honing good skills and social behavior.

Leash Reactivity/Aggression Seminar

Is your dog leash reactive or aggressive to other dogs or humans on leash? Do you know someone who is struggling and needs help with this behavior? Are you stressed every time you pass a dog on you walks? If yes, this seminar is a do not miss!

We will be accepting 4 dogs for a 20 minute evaluation and demonstration. If you would like your dog to be one of them, please call us to discuss! There will be no extra cost for bringing your dog, but we can only have them here for the time slot we give you. You may want to arrange someone to drop off and pick up your dog so you can be here for the enitre seminar. We will not be meeting your dog beforehand. Leash reactivity is not aggression, but can escalate to aggression if not addressed, and the sooner the better! PawSessions is so excited to be able to offer this very informative seminar to the community! In this seminar we will discuss the reasons dogs may have these behaviors and how to deal with them. For most reactive dog issues, if an owner does not know how to handle the dog properly, this behavior will escalate. Good basic obedience skills such as ‘leave it, and ‘place’, good leash handling skills, and the proper training tools are needed to help the owner be a good leader to their dog as this behavior is ‘not okay! ‘ and can be dangerous for the owner, other dogs and other people. Teaching your dog not to react will enable a better relationship between you and your dog so you can enjoy each other and be stress-free when out in public. This seminar is meant to educate the dog owner on understanding the nature of aggression and reactivity in dogs and the reasons and solutions to neutralize that behavior. If you and your dog are currently working with us, please feel free to attend without your dog and stay and learn by seeing us working with other dogs and how we deciede the course of action to control this behavior!
