Lens luxation is often secondary to other conditions such as uveitis, glaucoma, cataract, cancer of the eye, or trauma. In some cases, the cause is undetermined (idiopathic). Surgery to remove the lens is usually suggested in cases of anterior luxation. This is a Lens extraction surgery that we did on a very special little man, Indy.

If the lens falls into the front of the eye (Anterior Luxation) then it blocks the drainage of fluid from the eye resulting in glaucoma, or increased intraocular pressure. The condition is extremely painful and can cause permanent blindness.

Another condition that we see that affects the lens is a Lens Luxation. A lens luxation occurs when the ligaments supporting the lens weaken, displacing it from its normal position. The lens can fall backwards into the eye (Posterior Luxation) where it rarely causes discomfort.

The dreaded "Cone of Shame". Everyone hates the cone but it is so very important for ocular surgeries and injuries. Trust me, we like them about as much as you do, but they are necessary and everyone survives the cone.

We were so happy to donate our time for the ACVO National Service Animal Eye Exam Event sponsored by Epicur Pharma. We examined 27 beautiful service dogs today from Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws. They were all good babies and we know they will work hard for the humans they serve!

Meet Bryce. Bryce is a service dog with a very important job; she is an alert dog for her owner. Bryce is so smart and so in tune with her owner that she was able to tell when her owners heart rate was dangerously low even though the doctors didn’t. Now, when her owner goes to doctor appointments the doctors listen to Bryce! 🐾

Recheck schedule after cataract surgery is planned as follows: the day following surgery, 1 week later, 2 weeks from that, then 1 month, and 1 more month. From there if all is going well then then we recheck every 6-12 months as maintenance for the rest of pets life. Hank was doing great 1 day post surgery.

While the surgery itself is very important with cataract removal, just as important are the post surgery eye drops and rechecks. Your pet will go home with at least 3 eye drops (an antibiotic, an anti-inflammatory and a drop to help control the intraocular pressure). They also go home with 2 oral medications, an anti-inflammatory and antibiotic and then light sedatives when needed.

Our ACVO National Service Eye Exam Event has begun! Dr. Sigle is donating her time to provide these free, ocular screening eye exams to qualified service and working animals during the month of May. The program benefits formally trained working animals who selflessly care for all of us. It was our pleasure to see Barley and Lucee today, our first patients of the event! Huge thank you to Epicur Pharma for sponsoring this event.

Now we are ready to proceed with surgery itself, this procedure is a: Phacoemulsification. Cataract surgery involves removal of the lens fibers. In order to access the lens, an incision is made in the cornea and a round hole is made in the front of the lens capsule. A small pen-like instrument is introduced is introduced into the eye and through the hole in the lens capsule. This instrument produces ultrasonic vibrations that break up the lens material (phacoemulsification) as it simultaneously vacuums this material to remove it from the eye.
After the lens fibres are removed, a lens implant may be inserted into the lens capsule. The lens implant is not necessary for vision, but significantly improves near vision. At completion of the procedure, the cornea is then closed with tiny stitches that absorb in the next few weeks.
