UAH Policies (Effective January 1, 2022)
* We now ask that if you need to reschedule or cancel your appointment, to please do so within 24 hours.
* Appointments that are 15 minutes late or more will be treated as a walk-in appointment. If you are going to be 15 minutes late or more you may also opt to drop off your pet.
* Bringing an additional pet to an appointment time that is only scheduled for one pet may be asked to reschedule for another date or may be seen that day as a drop off or treated as a walk-in. This decision will be made at the doctor on call’s discretion.
* If you have no-called, no-showed more than twice, we will require a non-refundable deposit when scheduling future appointments. With the higher demand for animal care, this also means we have had to work in various medical emergencies. When we work in these patients, unfortunately we may have to reschedule some appointments that are already on our schedule. We will now compensate clients with a 10% discount if their appointment time must be moved to accommodate these emergencies. We have had such a large influx of new patients and are so excited to meet so many new people and pets! With this we have also been working to keep up with higher demand and we would like to be as transparent as possible with you. We hope that these new policies will improve everyone’s experience. Whether you are new client or a seasoned client, our goal is to make everyone’s experience with us as pleasant as possible with a focus on giving our patients the highest quality of care.

Experts at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine have provided a resource page for pet owners and the general public on highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (H5N1).

Recently, H5N1 influenza cases have been reported in cats that have consumed contaminated commercial raw food diets, unpasteurized milk, or had contact with wild birds and cattle.

Experts recommend that pet owners discontinue raw pet diets, and limit pet access to wild birds and raw milk.

Please keep an eye on your pets when put in cold, winter weather and follow these helpful tips to ensure their safety:

🐾Winter wellness: Has your pet had his/her preventive care exam (wellness exam) yet? Cold weather may worsen some medical conditions such as arthritis.

🐾Know the limits: Just like people, pets' cold tolerance can vary from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health.

🐾Provide choices: Just like you, pets prefer comfortable sleeping places and may change their location based on their need for more or less warmth.

🐾Stay inside. Cats and dogs should be kept inside during cold weather. It's a common belief that dogs and cats are more resistant than people to cold weather because of their fur, but it's untrue. Like people, cats and dogs are susceptible to frostbite and hypothermia and should be kept inside.

🐾Make some noise: A warm vehicle engine can be an appealing heat source for outdoor and feral cats, but it's deadly.

🐾Check the paws: Check your dog's paws frequently for signs of cold-weather injury or damage, such as cracked paw pads or bleeding.

🐾Wipe down: During walks, your dog's feet, legs and belly may pick up deicers, antifreeze, or other chemicals that could be toxic.

🐾Collar and chip: Many pets become lost in winter because snow and ice can hide recognizable scents that might normally help your pet find his/her way back home. Make sure your pet has a well-fitting collar with up-to-date identification and contact information. A microchip is a more permanent means of identification, but it's critical that you keep the registration up to date.

🐾Stay home: Hot cars are a known threat to pets, but cold cars also pose significant risk to your pet's health. You're already familiar with how a car can rapidly cool down in cold weather; it becomes like a refrigerator, and can rapidly chill your pet.

🐾Prevent poisoning: Clean up any antifreeze spills quickly, as even small amounts of antifreeze can be deadly.

🐾Avoid ice: When walking your dog, stay away from frozen ponds, lakes and other water.

🐾Provide shelter: We don't recommend keeping any pet outside for long periods of time, but if you are unable to keep your dog inside during cold weather, provide him/her with a warm, solid shelter against wind.

Important Alert for Cat Owners:

Did you know that cats can be at risk for bird flu, especially if they consume raw food or unpasteurized milk? These can potentially carry the virus, putting your furry friends in danger. To keep your cat safe, always ensure they have properly prepared food and avoid giving them raw or unpasteurized items. 🐾

From the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA)

Avian influenza A (H5N1) in cats:

Since the U.S. outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) in dairy cattle began in March 2024, dozens of cats are known to have contracted the virus, including barn and feral cats, indoor cats, and big cats in zoos and in the wild (e.g., mountain lions, tigers, leopards, and bobcats). Cats were already known to be susceptible to the H5N1 virus, with several feline cases linked to poultry or wild bird exposure before the cattle outbreak began.

Cats appear to be particularly susceptible to severe illness, often resulting in death. The good news is that infection can be prevented with a few simple practices.

How do cats become infected?

Recent investigations implicate food as a source of infection for cats, most often unpasteurized milk and raw or undercooked meat (e.g., poultry).

Other potential sources include:
🐾Raw colostrum and other unpasteurized dairy products (like cream)
🐾Exposure to infected wild birds or poultry
🐾Exposure to people who work on affected farms and to their clothing or other fomites

What are the clinical signs of H5N1 in cats?
🐱 Illness may start with loss of appetite, lethargy, and fever, then quickly progress, with cats exhibiting:
🐱Neurologic signs (e.g., ataxia, circling, tremors, seizures, or blindness)
🐱Severe depression
🐱Copious oculonasal discharge
🐱Other respiratory signs, including tachypnea, dyspnea, and possibly sneezing or coughing

To play it safe, cat owners should:
🐾Call their veterinary clinic—before taking cats in to be seen—and describe any clinical signs they have noticed so that the veterinary team can be ready when the patient arrives.
🐾Limit their cat’s contact with immunocompromised individuals if any exposure to the virus is possible.
🐾Protect themselves and others from influenza by following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
🐾Monitor their family and other animals that might have been exposed for signs of illness, and report any human illness to their local public health official.

How can H5N1 infection be prevented in cats?
Cat owners and caretakers are urged to follow these tips:
🐱Refrain from feeding cats any dairy products or colostrum that have not first been pasteurized or thoroughly cooked to kill the virus.
🐱Thoroughly cook meat before feeding, and avoid feeding raw meat-based treats or diets.
🐱Keep cats indoors to prevent exposure to birds and other wildlife.
🐱Avoid contact with sick or dead birds and other wildlife yourself.
🐱Keep cats away from livestock, poultry, and their environments, especially in areas with known H5N1 outbreaks.
🐱Take steps to prevent contact between captive big cats and wild birds (e.g., covering enclosures with netting and removing bird attractants nearby) in areas where H5N1 is circulating.
🐱Thoroughly wash your hands after handling your cat and after any encounters with poultry, livestock, or wild birds and other animals.
🐱Change your clothes and shoes, and thoroughly wash any exposed skin, after interacting with sick or dead animals that may harbor the H5N1 virus, and before interacting with your cat.

**Immediately contact your veterinarian if you notice signs of H5N1 or think your cat might have been exposed to the virus.

Very Cold 🥶 ❄️Night across NC- Please bring your pets 🐾 inside tonight- if they have to stay outside make sure they have adequate shelter, food and fresh water.

BRRR: Very cold temperatures are expected tonight when you factor in the expected wind gusts. Here is a look at the lowest wind chill values expected through Thursday morning. When you factor in the winds, the real feel temperatures will be in the 10s and single digits for most areas, with temperatures feeling below zero across the high country. Tonight should be the coldest feeling night so far this year.

Don't forget your pets, and check up on neighbors and older folks to make sure they have working heat sources.

The National Weather Service says "Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. Very cold temperatures can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure."
