We’re not Kidney-ing Around About Kidney Disease!

Did you know that kidney disease is the #1 cause of death in cats over 10?

March is National Kidney Month and it’s important that pet owners be aware of the symptoms of renal disease. This is especially true if you have a senior pet, as older animals are more susceptible to kidney issues.

A visit to the vet is warranted if you notice your pet drinking more water and urinating more than usual. Weight loss, lethargy, vomiting/diarrhea and bad breath with an ammonia-like odor are also symptoms.

Symptoms of renal failure can come on gradually, but the condition is serious and the sooner it’s caught, the sooner you and your vet can take steps to slow the progression. Treatment often includes a diet with less protein and phosphorus, with an emphasis on high-quality protein sources.

Dr. Michael Kearley discusses chronic renal failure (CRF) in cats, including symptoms, stages of CRF, diagnosis, and treatment options.

National Cat Health Month is observed in February each year. It’s a dedicated time to focus on the health and well-being of our feline friends. Compared to dogs, cats seem like low-maintenance pets, but they still need regular wellness care. Unfortunately, after their first visits as kittens, most never return to the vet for years until there’s a serious emergency. Check out the tips below to help you give your cat the best care possible.

How important is it to take care of your pet’s dental health? By age three, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats have some evidence of periodontal disease, which can cause mouth pain, tooth loss, and make eating difficult. At advanced stages, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and cause heart, liver, and kidney complications.

This is why your veterinarian regularly checks your pet’s teeth during an exam, and may strongly recommend a dental cleaning or “scaling” procedure. At Southwoods, we believe in preventing disease before it becomes a bigger—and more expensive—problem. If you’d like to schedule an exam for your pet or have questions about our dental services, call us at 336-275-7266.

With Valentine’s Day 💕 around the corner, it’s important to keep all those heart-shaped boxes of treats out of paw’s reach.
Chocolate is extremely dangerous to both dogs and cats. The toxic substance in chocolate is theobromine, and it is present in all chocolate. As a rule, the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine present, with the most dangerous being unsweetened baking chocolate and cocoa powder.

If you think your pet may have ingested chocolate or any harmful substance, don’t hesitate to call us at 336-275-7266. It’s also a good idea to keep the ASPCA Poison Control Center number handy: (888) 426-4435.

This month is National Pet Dental Health Month, which was started to encourage pet owners to be proactive about their pets’ dental health. Without routine dental care, pets develop periodontal disease, which causes smelly breath, infected gums and tooth loss. At its later stages, it can even spread infection to the kidneys, liver and heart. Keep your pets’ teeth healthy by scheduling their annual dental cleanings and brushing their teeth at home!
