There are so many waiting. So, so many.
06/20/2025

There are so many waiting. So, so many.

He's standing, his paws gently resting against the glass. Just like he’s done for weeks. Months.
Maybe longer. Every day, he watches. He waits. He hopes.
He’s not the kind of dog that jumps, barks, or begs. He’s the kind of dog that waits. Quietly.
With dignity.

And today, he smiles.

That smile—awkward, but radiant—was born from a promise he barely dared to make anymore:
What if, this time… it’s real?

Because this time, someone stopped.
Someone looked beyond his tired eyes.
Someone didn’t just walk past his cage saying, “too old,” “too big,” “not the right time.”
No. This time, someone saw his soul.

He held on, through it all.
Through grey days and cold nights. Through meals eaten in a corner, without a glance, without
a touch.
Through the noise, the cries, the goodbyes he watched in silence—from the other side of the
bars.
He saw friends leave, cage-mates disappear.
And he stayed.
With that flicker in his eyes—the spark of hope that refused to die.

All this time, he never stopped loving.
He never stopped believing that a human might still reach out to him.
Even if he didn’t understand why he was left there.
Even if he didn’t know what he’d done wrong.
Even if he cried the first days, the first nights.

But today, something feels different.
He can tell.
The human’s footsteps are slower. The gaze is softer.
The hand doesn’t move on to the next cage.
It stops.
It reaches out.

A collar is placed around his neck. A leash clipped on.
But this time, it’s not to move him to another cage.
Not to weigh him, not for a vet visit.
This time, it’s to leave.
Really leave.
For good.

He’s going to get in a car.
He’ll discover a home—maybe a bed.
A name that will become his own.
A voice that will call him every day—not just to say “sit,” but to say “I love you.”
He’ll learn he can sleep without flinching.
He can eat without watching his back.
He can rest his head on a pillow… and on a heart.

And the smile he wears today?
It’s not just joy.
It’s freedom.
The smile of someone who never stopped hoping, even locked away.
Even invisible.

The smile of someone who waited.
And, at last—was chosen.

HOLY CALZONE....here's the long awaited Chica update.

Yesterday started out innocently enough as I stumbled through the door of Pet Health Clinic with 3 sips of coffee in me...and a concerned girl that wasn't given breakfast...and a very confused staff. I had shown up for Chica's surgery a day early.

After signing her papers for surgery...I left...with Chica in tow.

Today we arrived again for surgery. I passed her off and went about my day waiting for a text from Dr. Andrews about a successful surgery. That text came around 2 PM. Chica was resting, a comment about sutures, yada, yada, yada....you know....the brief update you get about the incision you somehow had in your head was about 5 inches long. Just the usual.

I finished up what I was doing and headed to Easton. I made a pitstop at Lowe's to pick up the materials for an upcoming project here - just in case Chica wasn't her bubbly self and didn't want to lay on the seat waiting for them to load our curbside order.

Y'all. We. Were. Not. Prepared.

On our way into the clinic we passed Emily as she left with her foster....and she made a brief comment about the surgery being a "little involved"...and then she had to run to attend to something at home. Still, we shrugged that off as the normal aftermath of surgery. We went in. Paid the bill. Got the usual rundown of aftercare, which included the instructions about leaving the cone on. Ok....no problem.

As Luke went into the back I told him I was going to take a picture of him coming out. Nobody cares for unknown paparazzi in their face as they come out carrying a dog. While he was back there I made the decision to videotape the exit.

For the love of all that is holy I am glad I was not the one being videotaped because I would not have been able to disguise my shock...or the sound of Ethel's jaw hitting the ground.

We were not prepared.

Chica has drains and "different" stitches..... all over. Maybe Emily will see the post and pop into the comments to tell our followers about the stitches and why they were needed for this surgery. There is a picture here. It is not for the faint of heart.

I am beyond grateful that Ethel decided to take that trip with me this afternoon. Chica was not comfortable...at all. She was, and is, in pain. Ethel spent the trip repositioning her and I was dodging bumps in the road.

Tonight she is home. She's still in a significant amount of pain even with the tramadol and carprofen on board. She did eat and go out for a p*e. It's going to be a long night.

Tonight we are asking for your help covering the cost of her latest surgery. We have included it in the pictures.

This girl has not had an easy go of it. If you remember, she had approximately 1 lb. of bladder stones removed during her first procedure. She was also spayed at that time. That surgery was followed by a nasty brush with mastitis, and then a vestibular episode. Then today she had the mammary tumors removed, along with a dental.

It's a big medical week here. Lexi, Chica and Cinder will all have medical appointments.

Prayers and shares are appreciated and encouraged!

Chica is going back in for her second surgery. This time Dr. Andrews will address her teeth and remove her mammary tumors. She's had a bit of a bumpy time since her first surgery. She had a nasty case of mastitis and then she had a vestibular episode. She still has a bit of head tilt from that. We'll ask Dr. Andrews if she expects that to resolve or not. Chica has turned out to be quite the character. She follows us everywhere and supervises the things we're doing in the goofiest of fashions. We're hopeful that she'll breeze through this surgery like the champ she was the first time. (Surgery is Wednesday).

Lexi will be going to see Dr. Coughlin at All Pets to have her legs evaluated. We were able to score her an appointment on Wednesday morning just ahead of Steven (Cinder). She is somewhat weight bearing on one of her legs...and she can almost run when she wants to. She's been busy keep us straight at the rescue and at the clinic. She's gotten quite good at "bossin" us.

Steven (Cinder) will have a follow up with Dr. Coughlin following Lexi's evaluation. His ears seem to have made a significant improvement. We really think he has a food allergy of some sort. We remain concerned about the "lumps" on his backside. We're interested to see if Doc sees an improvement in them. We expect that we'll have a plan of action for him come Wednesday. Steven (Cinder)'s big news is he scored his very own foster last week. We hear he's having lots of adventures, has learned to sleep in the bed, and has 2 furry foster nephews that he loves and visits a few times a week with his foster mom.

These are 3 of the many current medical cases that we're working on right now. Help is always needed to help us cover their medical expenses.

Do you remember Chica?

She has made remarkable progress after her first surgery, though she has encountered some challenges along the way. After a tough battle with mastitis and a vestibular episode, she has shown incredible resilience, even though she still has a slight head tilt from the episode—it's less noticeable than before.

This Thursday, she will embark on another surgery for mammary tumor removal and a dental procedure. Together, we can help her through this next phase with the strength and support she needs.
