Today, our board joined the Greensburg–Decatur County Animal Shelter staff and their Shelter Board for a wonderful meal, generously catered and hosted by our amazing Board Treasurer and shelter staff member, Brenda Emsweller. It was a great opportunity to enjoy our holiday gathering, spend time together, and see the staff relax and enjoy themselves. Our Board would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the shelter staff for the important work they do each and every day.

During our October monthly meeting, we heard from Elizabeth Walden of Girl Scout Troop 909, who has chosen to partner with the Friends of the Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter as part of her Gold Award project. Elizabeth’s project focuses on fundraising, designing, and building “Pet Pit Stops” — food pantry-style stations that will provide resources for pet owners throughout the county.

While regular donations will continue to go directly to the animal shelter, community members are encouraged to place smaller bags of pet food or supplies in the Pet Pit Stops once they are opened. We also plan to collaborate with donors to help keep these boxes stocked with food and essential items. While ensuring we do not take away from the animal shelter's donations.

Elizabeth intends to build two to three Pet Pit Stops, depending on available materials and design considerations, with assistance from her uncle. The project is expected to be completed by April 1, 2026.

Elizabeth has submitted her proposal for approval to the Girl Scouts and aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of the boxes through consistent maintenance and restocking efforts working with the Friends of board.

Help Us Keep Shelter Dogs Warm This Winter. We need to raise $900.

We’re joining forces to provide safe, comfortable outdoor dog houses for the dogs at the Greensburg & Decatur County Animal Shelter.

The shelter staff work tirelessly to ensure every dog has a warm place indoors. However, with the growing number of animals in their care, space has become limited — and sometimes dogs must be placed in the outdoor kennels. The team does everything possible to keep these dogs comfortable, but they need our help to make sure no animal has to endure the cold without proper protection.

Right now, many of the outdoor dogs are using plastic barrels filled with hay for shelter. Unfortunately, these quickly become damp and cold during the winter months. Our goal is to raise enough funds to purchase raised, weatherproof dog houses that will stay dry and warm, providing a safe haven for the dogs who must stay outside.

Your support can make a real difference.
Every dollar helps us get closer to our goal — and keeps a dog warm this winter.

Please consider donating today and helping us give these dogs the safe, dry shelter they deserve. ❤️

🐾 Help Us To Help The Shelter to Continue the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) Program! 🐾

In 2024, the Greensburg-Decatur County Animal Shelter began its Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program — a humane and effective way to manage our community cat population. Through TNR, community cats are safely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their outdoor homes. This process helps stabilize colonies and prevents hundreds of kittens from being born into tough outdoor conditions.

Thanks to grant funding, the shelter has been able to keep this life-saving program going — but those funds will be depleted by the end of November.

At our October 21, 2025 meeting, the Friends of the Greensburg Decatur County Animal Shelter voted to use existing donations that we have received to cover the next TNR transport of 26 cats in December, at a cost of $1,761.50 — preventing an estimated 312 kitten births! 🐱💙

Now, we need your help to keep the program running into the new year.
Your donation will help ensure the shelter can continue TNR efforts in January and February, giving time to the shelter to reapply for new grant funding and preventing the cycle of overpopulation from starting again.

💛 Every dollar makes a difference — and every cat fixed means fewer kittens in need.

🎃🐾 Tripps Trunk or Treat is Tomorrow! 🐾🎃

Join us Saturday, October 18th from 11 AM – 2 PM for a fun-filled event you won’t want to miss!

Helms Auto Sales has teamed up with the Friends of the Greensburg Decatur County Animal Shelter to make a difference — and add a little extra fun! 🐶🐱

🚚 Let’s fill the bed of the truck provided by Helms Auto Sales with donations for the shelter! If we can fill it up, Chris Ramey will get a pie in the face at the end of the event! 🥧😂 Everyone knows Chris rather it's with his volunteering or his voice on WTRE Radio.

🛒 Items most needed:

Cat litter (always needed!)

Puppy food

Kitten food

Wet cat food

Cleaning supplies

The truck is for bulk items, but if you have treats or small toys, you can still help fill the individual dog and cat Halloween buckets! 🎃

Let’s come together to support our shelter, have some laughs, and make this an amazing community event! ❤️
