A few reminders to the public:

1. We ask that you please watch your dog when it is outside, especially if it is a purebred. We have had an incident with a missing pet that was found quite a distance from Decatur County, the dog had been stolen and had been posted for sale on Craigslist. Help us help keep your pets safe.

2. Please think twice before using sites such as Craigslist to re-home your pet. As sad as it is, people use free pets from these sights as bait dogs in order to train their fighting dogs. Please consider using a local shelter, humane society, or rescue as a safe alternative to re-home your pet. Please contact your local shelter with any questions.

The GDCAS has only 2 dogs remaining in our kennels this weekend. Monday begins Shelter Appreciation week and what better way to kick it off by saying we cleared our kennels!!!! If these 2 boys are adopted, rescued, or fostered today we can for the first time ever, CLEAR our dog kennels!!! These are two amazing dogs, UTD on all vaccines, neutered males, and 100% good boys.

Kobe- 4 year old male mixed breed dog. Weighs about 50 lbs. He is fully vetted. This guy is a lover, he is sweet, soft, loves to cuddle, and enjoys chewing a good bone. He is your perfect Sunday Football watching buddy! Would love evening walks and a fetch session too. Kobe prefers to keep his distance from cats.

Rascle-This adorable 1-year-old heeler mix has been waiting for his forever home for 116 days. Weighing in at 25 pounds, he’s playful, neutered, and up to date on all his shots. With his cute bat ears and a friendly demeanor, Rascle gets along well with other dogs, cats, and kids. He loves toys and treats and is always ready for a fun play session! After watching his 2 siblings find their homes and his best friend Dynasty go to foster, he’s hoping to be next. If you’re looking for a fun-loving companion, Rascle might just be the perfect fit!

Come meet us today! The shelter opens at 11am

***if you have other household pets meet and greets are always recommended to make sure it is a match for your pets as well as you.

The shelter will begin bringing in all new faces next week! Stay tuned. And as always, thank you for your continued support.

Its almost here!! Join us tomorrow from 1 to 3, we are so excited and so is trippy!! We wanted to share a few details with you!

The shelter will be open for adoptions during this event. However, we will not be permitting the public inside this day. The Shelter staff will have a booth set up with a book of pets available with pictures and bios. If you find a pet you would like to meet, let us know and we will bring the pet outside to you. You must remove any costumes or mask or facepaints in order to do a meet and greet with a pet. The crowds and costumes are very overwhelming for our shelter pets. It is our top priority to make our Shelter pets feel safe and secure at all times.

We are offering half price adoptions till the end of this event.

Dogs $40 -includes preventatives,( flea tick, dewormer) utd vaccinations and alteration
Cats $20- includes preventatives,( flea/tick/dewormer) FIV testing, UTD vaccinations and alteration

These deals are a steal for a lifetime of love and joy from one of our shelter pets.

We are so excited to see you all tomorrow. If you would like to set up a trunk, please do. We will be choosing a best trunk and offering a prize for the spookiest and most unique one!!

Trippy asked us to remind you to bring his friends treats too at the shelter if you can, he wants them to have the best Halloween yet and show them how wonderful holidays can be for them too while they live with him there at the shelter.

This event is one of our favorites. We are so thankful for the help the community offers our shelter pets, and words cannot express how much we appreciate the love and support our staff and pets receive from you all every day. Whether you volunteer, walk a dog, play with a kitten, make a donation, or just give us a kind word of encouragement, share a post, you make a difference to us all. Especially our animals. This is an opportunity for us to give back to YOU for all you do!!!!

See you all soon!!

Where are they now Wednesday featuring our beloved Tripp! This is our office dog at the shelter, and he is so special to each and every one of us. Many of you have had the opportunity to let this boy love on you! He is the first face to greet you the moment you enter the doors. We get asked pretty much daily if he is up for adoption, this rockstar is not. He has a permanent home with us at the shelter in the front office! He is simply put, everyone's dog here we all get to love and spoil, and we couldn't imagine a day without this sweet boy here to get us all through every single moment here at the shelter. We love you Trippy!

This week is the perfect time to feature him. His Trunk or treat event is Saturday 1 till 3pm at the Shelter! He definitely would love it if anyone would be willing to fill his friends buckets at the shelter with all the goodies they deserve on Halloween too! Treats, Beds, Food, supplies like cat litter and cleaning products, toys, cat nip, all would be things these animals would love to have this year!

He also has had his humans working hard to bring you venders, lots of candy for the kiddos, a bounce house. So many special raffle items we know you will enjoy, Expressions Florist, C&Ps Tavern, Spruce Salon, House of Ink, and Rocking Mercantile just to name a few. Hot apple cider, nachos and hotdogs, and so many adorable spooky costumes both human and pet. We cannot wait to share this second annual event with you all Saturday!!! See you all then!!!

*****We are still accepting vendors, and anyone is welcome to set up a trunk!

The GDCAS would like to present 2 of our dogs in our Foster Program and to also highlight some fun facts about fostering. Beau and Freddy are both fully vetted males ready for their fur ever homes, they have both settled into their fosters loving homes and boy are their personalities growing. If you are are interested in meeting either boy, please contact the shelter and we can set up a meet and greet!!

What is fostering:

Provides a pet a temporary home prior to adoption. Fostering is a personal way to contribute to saving homeless pets.

Why Foster:

-Fostering saves lives when a shelter is full. It also frees up space to save another animal.
-Some animals do not do well in a shelter environment because they are frightened or need a little extra care.
-Some animals need a calm Quiter environment to recover from illness or injury
-Fostering for a few days, weeks, or months can be a lifesaving gift for pets in need
-Pregnant or nursing mamas do better giving birth and caring for their babies in a home environment

Who can foster:

-If you want to do something to help the animals without a lifetime commitment, fostering is a flexible, fun, rewarding volunteer job here is why:

-its more flexible than volunteer jobs that require specific times to be present

-it's a wonderful way to enjoy a pet, but you are not in a position for a lifetime commitment. Example, fostering is an excellent option for families with college students, school aged summer breaks, or military families.

What skills are needed:

-Some of our most in need animals are those who require a little extra training and time and attention staff is limited to give. Shy cats often need time to learn to trust and the quiet of a home.
environment to come out of their shells. Dogs benefit from learning basic cues, which can be a big help in preparing them for a future home.
-We provide you with all the supplies, medical needs, and even food if you need it. We are here to guide you the entire step of the way, HOME starts with YOU!

Will I have to find the animal a home:

-We do ask you post the animal to your social medias, and send us video and pictures for us to do the same. Tell your friends and family about the animal. So far, our foster program has a 100% success rate. We will guide you in the adoption process.

Saying goodbye:

This is the most common response we get. " I could never let them go, I would get too attached"

Giving up an animal you have opened your heart and home to can be difficult emotionally. Most families will continue to provide you with updates and pictures. Seeing the pet take that freedom ride off into the sunset with a new loving family will remind you why you fostered to begin with. Knowing you were a part of saving a life and helping the animal find a loving home is tremendously rewarding. You are helping your community also.

Fostering is NOT a second abandonment. Being in a foster home can be a lifesaving bridge for a pet who needs a little more time and care. It give's the animal the opportunity to experience life in a home and to learn people can be kind, trusted, food is available, and they have a secure place they can rest.

And sometimes, fosters decide they want to make the animal a permanent part of their family, this is what we affectionately call a foster failure! We love foster fails! Fosters always have the opportunity to officially adopt if they choose to.

When you are ready, contact the Shelter and talk with us about next steps. There is no shortage of pets that need preparation time before being matched with a loving family of their own, YOU ARE THE FIRST STEP TO THE REST OF A SECURE SAFE LIFE!!

🐶🐶AVAILABLE ADOPTION🐶🐶

Say hi to Zena! Zena is a female Boxer/Shar Pei mix who is around 1-2 years old. She is a tried and true escape artist. Potential adopters need to have her on a leash or tie out cable when she’s outside alone or she will scale the fence. (And she’s pretty hard to catch) Zena is potty trained and leash trained. She’s quiet and calm and very loving. She doesn't seem to be a fan of cats, and we don't know how she is around other dogs. Zena gets along well with children. Come see her!
