Rest in Peace, Thrifty – Our Heart, Our Light, Our Guardian
Today, we said goodbye to one of the most incredible souls we’ve ever had the privilege of knowing. Thrifty wasn’t just our café’s cat—he was everyone’s cat. A friend, a healer, a mischievous troublemaker, and a constant source of love and laughter.
Thrifty came to us in late summer 2020, abandoned, sick, flea-infested, and FIV+. But from the moment he arrived, he made it clear—this was his place. He claimed his throne in the thrift shop, which we eventually named after him, and he quickly became the heart of our little world.
Through the heaviness of the pandemic, Thrifty gave us light. His love story with CeeCee, his ‘fiancée,’ made it into the local paper, bringing joy to so many. And even after she found her forever home, Thrifty continued to collect love from every person who walked through our doors. He greeted us every morning, demanded attention (and treats), and at the end of each day, took over the café to do “Thrifty things”—drinking from the sink, sleeping where he wasn’t supposed to, tearing up furniture, and perching on his favorite merchandise.
He wasn’t just a shop cat; he was family. He sensed when we needed comfort, when we were struggling, and he made sure we knew we weren’t alone. His loud, steady purrs had a way of easing the hardest days. He was there for birthdays, holidays, milestones—every moment that mattered.
Even in his final days, Thrifty fought to stay with us, holding on for nearly two weeks after his diagnosis. He knew how deeply he was loved, how many hearts he had touched. And today, on a warm and beautiful day, he told us it was time. With his favorite people surrounding him, in the place he called home, we let him go.
Our café won’t be the same without him. The days will be quieter, the space a little emptier. But Thrifty’s memory will live on in every cat we rescue, every adoption we celebrate, and every heart he’s left an imprint on. His story is proof that FIV+ cats can live full, happy lives. That every street cat deserves love, kindness, and a place to call home.
