Ace got home in Illinois this afternoon and was able to have his first couple of people come by to test those new skills he’s been learning with us regarding visitors. So proud of this guy for showing off some of that growing confidence. We are going to spend some time helping him transition back home with his family so that Team Ace is all on the same page and able to be successful! 🐾

When we are working with a dog struggling with confidence in a given environment, working on handler engagement is a great way to set your dog up for success in this session.

You see Ace in the top left photo watching the (to him) stressor of a group of kids loudly approaching. He was allowed to watch. There was no negative behaviors offered, he sat next to me with a loose leash taking in the approaching teens. The second he looked at me he received payment in the form of food and verbal praise.
Very rapidly Ace became less interested in the humans that brought him stress and more interested in what focusing on me got him.

Option 1 was stressful, option 2 was getting praise AND freeze dried beef liver… eventually the drive for food and praise overrode the fear and anxiousness surrounding the new addition to his environment and he became a happy more relaxed dog playing what he felt was the simplest game of making the handler into a treat dispenser.

Handler engagement is NOT just for sport or working dogs, although it plays a vital role for them. We can utilize engagement to help a dog gain confidence in a variety of situations/environments as well as help the dog and handler relationship. Engagement can be life changing for you and your dog.

One of our new private lesson clients, Zero is already undergoing some awesome changes just with some information that was shared at their consult. Zero is incredibly afraid of anything new and can be known to act undesirably when stressed. So Faith gave some training protocols she wanted to implement and before their first lesson, his humans have already been putting in the work! Faith sent a video of how to introduce this particular task in a way that empowered the dog to want to perform the task and built confidence in doing so.

The top photo is how it started during the session when our client first texted. We know some people learn by seeing it done step by step, so we took a short video for them and along came the bottom photo from the same day. With multiple reps and the determination of his owner to help him become more confident with something new.

The skill of “place” can seem mundane but it truly can open up a world of possibilities for dogs within their home. For Zero it’s one stage of boundaries being set when company comes over. We make it simple for him to understand his job in those moments while also giving him somewhere to go where people aren’t crowding around him or actively trying to interact with him.

Remember that it’s not your dog’s job to be everyone’s entertainment, but it is YOUR job to advocate for and train your dog.

Emma struggles with confidence. Her obedience is started but when that intense fear takes hold of her, everything she knows goes out the window. So we are working on building this young girl’s confidence and teaching her that the world is not as scary as she thinks. While building her confidence she is also improving on her obedience skills. Way to go Ms. Emma!

BODI passed the initial sets of tests and was taken into a working canine program today!

There are times that rehoming a dog is necessary… life is unpredictable. Bodi was never neglected or abused, his story isn’t filled with sadness and cruelty. He is loved, valued and ultimately this decision was made by his handler in order to help Bodi be happy and fulfill his needs. To say that this was a hard choice is an understatement for our client but we want to take a moment to celebrate Bodi’s new adventure, but also give a shout out to his handler who gave him true devotion by investing in training, committing and spending countless hours training, exercising and loving Bodi from the time he came home as a puppy. Today he made one of the most selfless decisions to put his dog’s needs above his own desires.

We are honored to have been part of Baby Bodi’s journey and look forward to seeing how he advances.

What a handsome and happy guy Ace is.
Watching the transformation in this guy is fun!
When he heads home at the end of this month we will spend some time working with his owners on how to maintain what Ace has learned and teach him that even back home the rules are the same. We will also give Ace and his humans some homework to work on to not only maintain his new skills BUT to expand on them.

Update: Bodi has been accepted into a working canine program.

Bodi is part of the Lotus K9 family and we will help his new owners with the transition and are offering a couple of private lessons as well.

Young male working line GSD, AKC registered.
Has been neutered and UTD on vaccines and prevention
DOB 1/7/23

He cohabitates with a female GSD (the female isn’t his biggest fan sometimes)

High energy, loves to work and has Basic Obedience, started in scent work and seems to love it.

He needs a strong leader to help in advancing his training.

He’s been well cared for and loved but the life of the present owner is changing and a difficult choice had to be made.

A little motivation goes a long way!

If you’re one of my Mantrailing students, you have heard me preach about motivating your dog. Sometimes we have to think outside the box…for instance, I once had an obedience client dog who was motivated by water and ONLY water. We had to get creative but we made it work and that dog ended up really enjoying learning obedience (the humans too as it was always a fun time especially on those hot summer days 😂). The dog went on to no longer need the water reward and became an obedient companion for his family but we had to start somewhere and create in that dog a desire to play the game.

What is your dogs motivation?

For Ace he enjoys food of most kinds with a splash of a toy and some handler play to keep it fun 🥳

Did you know that doing your dog’s nails doesn’t have to be a war? It’s also not something that has to be daunting and miserable.
It can be an easily managed part of your dog’s care if you can devote a little time to showing your dog bits and pieces of the whole picture gradually.

Change the mindset about doing your dogs nails starting with yourself.

Trust me, I get it! I’m not the biggest fan of doing my own dog’s nails if I’m honest…. But it IS a crucial part of dog ownership and it can greatly affect your dog’s health. So, I use it as a training opportunity and play a game with my dogs almost every week and we spend time making nail trims less daunting. Do they love them? No but they know the drill… get your nails done and get a snack and some playtime afterwards and THAT is what they love!

So we were asked to come in and evaluate a litter of pups and help match each pup with a potential owner for a breeder.

We take puppy selection very seriously so we spent time speaking with each person on the list to establish what exactly they were looking for and we discussed what their day to day life looked like, past dogs, behaviors that are “deal breakers” and more. We covered as many details as possible with each potiental puppy owner.

When we evaluated the puppies we took their scores and and we compared their results with the lists for potential owners and talked to each person yet again about what puppy or puppies fit their criteria and THEN we matched them with the best puppy according to what we had discussed. It was quite the process and there were some tough conversations with those who either didn’t match with a pup for that litter.

But when we come in to test and help select the puppy for a family or an individual, we are not there to sell them a dog, we are there to be honest and unbiased to help the client get what they need/want.

We take testing and selecting homes very seriously and put honesty and integrity above all else.

A poorly matched dog and home will lead to a lot of heartache, resentment and sometimes very difficult decisions. Because we know the joys of having that amazing companion, we strive to help clients find a well matched companion.

And we have had great success with selections and have many satisfied client pairings.
Today we got sent an update on a pup we matched with an owner who was dead set on getting a male GSD, the dog checked every box BUT that… we talked and the client decided that they could compromise on that one element BECAUSE the dog checked literally every other box…. Her name at the time was “Liberty”. She then became “Morgan” as she began her adventure with her new family. Out for some R&R with her family at 4 months old they went to South Dakota… Ms. Morgan is still checking those boxes for her family and we could not be happier with how satisfied Team Morgan is!

Ace is with us mainly because he was controlling the scene at his house when guests came.
We are refreshing his obedience and helping him gain confidence around strangers in a variety of situations.
He is learning that he doesn’t make the rules, and that he must follow the leadership of his handler.

Does this mean that we make Ace allow everyone to get in his face and pet him? NO. It means we understand he isn’t there yet (although he is actually a very social dog once he relaxes) so we advocate that people don’t cause unnecessary pressure by demanding they pet this handsome guy. We want him to be comfortable being neutral. This is going to help Ace become more confident because his job is simple, “don’t be a jerk”. We have no doubt that over time as his confidence grows and his maturity level increases, Ace will be a social guy… but for now we are going to meet him where he is and make things as simple for him as possible.

Stable leadership with clear communication through repetition and consistency… it’s what our dogs crave and with this they will thrive.

A dog that is taught boundaries from day 1 will be a much more enjoyable companion. Training is about way more than a command. It’s an understanding of what is expected, what’s allowed and what is not.

Ace is not even a year and a half old and is a big powerful guy. We don’t want him dragging his owners around and being out of control. Puppy Tessa had a follow up lesson today where she got some practice on dog neutrality. This girl rocked her session! Faith’s dog, Khaos enjoys helping client dogs succeed! (Now ya’ll know why sometimes he gets special things like steak… this guy works hard!)

Ace is really understanding that NEUTRALITY is the name of the game! His handler is his advocate and will not allow people to put him in a bad position and force unwanted attention. Later he may welcome that, but for now we meet Ace where he is and we take what he can give and build on it from there. Giving him a variety of pictures where the answer is still the same (just lay there and chill- don’t be a jerk) helps solidify what is expected. 😂The dog you hear in the background learned his human was home from band camp and he gets super excited! Here is Ace with no warning that someone was coming in. It’s a slightly different picture as this person lives in the house where he is training but an easy introduction to this as his home has many situations where family may visit unexpectedly and we want to set Ace up for success! Ace getting to greet a stranger and make a new friend. He’s still showing signs of uncertainty and stress and that is ok right now because it’s part of training! This is what progress looks like. It’s not always perfect and flawless and it’s not always comfortable but the dog knows and has the freedom to go back to the place bed or walk away from the stranger… he is choosing to be there and is actively enjoying being social! That bucket has KIBBLE only. Part of his meal, in fact and he’s eating it from a complete stranger! Ms. Maeve came to us for our Puppy Pre K package prior to heading home to her family. We knew that as avid attendees at the gun range that Maeve would need to be confident around gunfire. So at the age of 8 weeks we began introducing her to our local gun range. We did this slowly and safely and with one of our resident dogs who is comfortable around gunfire to help reinforce that gunfire is nothing scary. Here is a recent video of Maeve from her family that they sent to us as an update. She is just now 9 months old!!!! At Lotus K9 Academy we do our best to help start your puppy off exposing them to as many scenarios as possible to set them up for success!

Aside from genetics, building your confident puppy into a confident dog starts the moment you bring them home. There are tons of things you can expose your puppy to that don’t involve putting them at risk before they are fully vaccinated.
