And just like that it is 2025 - a new year - a year to hopefully change some more "underdogs" lives.
2024 was a rough year, a lot of ups and downs as that is normal in rescue - we had some tough losses but we also had some pretty great wins with dogs that were not given much of a chance of making it but they beat the odds.
Financially it was a HUGE year for us - I don't have the final numbers as we had several appointments in the past 2 weeks we are still working on going through the invoices. And while donations were down this year, understandably , we still maintained because of you - OUR RESCUE FAMILY
And then September 27th - Hurricane Helene hit and devasted our mountains - our home and the struggle for so many is still there - we still have people living in tents and cars - so many lost everything and so many lives lost - as we sat here as Helene was hitting - we had trees falling everywhere around our home and I remember telling Mr. Todd that as soon as we could get out (which we did not realize what a challenge that was going to be for almost a week and no power or cell phone service ) we had to get out there and do our part and we are still doing that - we have another pet food and supplies give away scheduled for this weekend and I have a list of people needing help with some vetting for their animals that I am working on - while we have always helped families keep their pets - we have had to step it up a notch in the past 3 months and have been blessed to help so many amazing families and their pets.
I am not sure what 2025 will hold - I do know that the lady is tired and one goal is to find more "reliable" fosters that won't fail our dogs because a problem we ran into several times in 2024 was fosters saying they could not foster anymore and those dogs end up at The Wagner Zoo and the Zoo is full and with Pips (Odins) immune issues we are going to have to re-evaluate as far as what fosters can come here as most will have to be quarantined with another foster for 2 weeks before they could come here if that was the plan but right now The Zoo is full so in order to help more pups (and believe me the list is long of pups we have been contacted about ) we needs fosters to step up - fosters that are committed and understand that dogs are usually not going to come to you housebroken (though some do) they need time to decompress, adoptions are slow as they have been for a while for all rescues but we are seeing that pick up so you have to be committed to having a foster with you until they are adopted - as we do not just let our dogs go to any homes - we owe them more than that and are very strict with our adoption process as the goal is to always do what is best for the pups - so if you want to start out the new year by changing a life - shoot us a message with any questions you have about fostering. From time to time I will be posting some of the dogs we are in need of fosters for on the page so stay tuned for that if you are thinking about helping change some amazing animals lives this year
We will continue to do our community help projects as the need is still very great so that will not change.
This year would not have been possible without our team of volunteers - so many have come out every weekend helping with our give aways - Mr. Todd, Dr. Wilfert, Cindy, Rose, Lisa C, Sharon, Brandon, Erica, Courtney, Alex, Lyssa,Dr. Shoemake Donna and Michael and I might have missed a few but some of these folks have not missed an event and we appreciate that so much. Our dependable fosters that allow us to continue saving lives .Sharon keeps much needed funds coming in with our monthly auctions and other fundraisers - we could not sustain without those and she does an amazing job with them - and anytime I am in a bind needing something done quickly - I know I can call Sharon and she will get it done, our vet teams at Haywood Animal Hospital and Haywood Road Animal Hospital - none of this would be possible without the top notch care they give our animals and they are appreciated , The neurology department at South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty has helped us with a couple of dogs in 2024 with top notch care and we appreciate them so much and still have one under their care, Palmetto Veterinary Specialist has helped us piece back together some rough orthopedic cases and we appreciate them - Western Carolina Veterinary Surgery just helped us with a community project pet (Herman) and we appreciate them and I appreciate Dr. Crouch always answering me back quickly when I have a dilemma - top notch vet.
I wish I could say 2025 is going to be the year that rescues are no longer needed - but the sad reality is every year it seems to get worse and they are needed more than ever but I always say - rescues can only do what they can with help - donations, fosters, volunteers - we are not super heros that wear capes just going around saving lives - it takes a team -
Our donation match was a HUGE success - we needed to raise 3625.00 to match the 7500.00 - we raised $7375.00 which is amazing and so appreciated and a HUGE help as our vet bills never go away especially now that we are doing so many community projects
My hope is 2025 will be a year that we can indeed save many more underdogs - my hope is that people will step up to foster and my hope is that people will continue to believe in our mission of giving these amazing underdogs the 2nd chance they so deserve and to keep pets with their families that love them very much.
Together we are making a difference one amazing animal at a time and how blessed we are to be able to do this -
Happy New Year Rescue Family - lets make 2025 the best year yet

Things definitely got off to a rocky start with our visitor from the north, Tinsel, but he learned a lot and we wish him a safe trip back home!
