We are aware of the canine respiratory disease outbreak across the nation and wanted to provide some information for our clients and the community. The cause of the illness has not yet been identified, but is assumed a viral cause and contagious.
Some patients simply have a cough and recover; some are developing more serious illnesses, such as pneumonia, which can be life-threatening.
Per the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, there are no confirmed cases in Ohio at this time. There are a couple steps you can take to avoid your canine companion being exposed…
(1) Avoid public dog parks & areas where you know other dogs to frequent. Reduce the chance of exposure until this is better understood.
(2) If friends and family are visiting you for the holiday and bringing dogs, ask them if the dogs are up to date of respiratory vaccines (Bordetella, influenza, Parainfluenza) and if their dogs are having any symptoms or if their dogs could have potentially been exposed to other dogs (boarding, daycare, groomer, dog parks, etc).
(3) Make sure your canine companion is vaccinated for the common respiratory diseases, Bordetella, Influenza, Parainfluenza). Parainfluenza is part of the DHPP vaccine.
(4) If your dog shows clinical signs or symptoms (lethargy, cough, poor appetite, difficulty breathing), you should contact your veterinarian for advice and seek medical care.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call us, we are here to help! We will post updates as we receive them.
