Dogs can’t tell us when they’re not feeling well, but their body language can speak volumes. 🐾 Here are some signs that your dog might be sick and needs medical attention:

❌ Lethargy: If your normally active dog suddenly becomes sluggish or uninterested in activities they usually enjoy, it could be a sign of illness.
❌ Changes in Posture: A hunched back, tucked tail, or stiffness can indicate pain or discomfort.
❌ Restlessness: Pacing, inability to settle, or constant shifting can be a sign that something is wrong.
❌ Excessive Panting or Drooling: While some dogs pant or drool naturally, excessive amounts, especially when it’s not hot or after exercise, could be a sign of distress.
❌ Avoiding Touch: If your dog flinches or moves away when you try to pet them, they might be experiencing pain.

Always trust your instincts—if your dog’s behavior seems off, it’s better to be safe and consult with your primary veterinarian. In the event of an emergency, contact Upstate Vet at (864) 233-7650. We are here for you and your pets, 24/7.🐶❤️

Meet Ponyo! 🐾

After suffering serious injuries from a dog attack, Ponyo's health took a complicated turn when he developed an acute kidney injury (AKI). His primary veterinarian at Electric City Animal Clinic recognized the severity and referred him to Upstate Vet for specialized care.

Ponyo spent a challenging week in our ICU, where his kidneys initially struggled to respond to treatment. However, with around-the-clock monitoring, intravenous fluids, and nutritional support, he made a remarkable recovery! 🙌

Thanks to the teamwork of our incredible critical care, emergency, and patient care teams, Ponyo is back on his paws. 🐾

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Vanessa Von Hendy-Willson (Dr.V) on her new role as Upstate Vet's Medical Director!

Dr.V received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Purdue University in 2005. After two years in private practice, she decided to specialize and went to The Ohio State University for a rotating internship, and then Purdue University for her residency. In 2011, she became Board Certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine.

She then moved to Greenville to join Upstate Vet, and has been a vital part of our Internal Medicine team for almost 13 years. Throughout the course of her career, she has continued to be an avid learner, regularly completing courses to further her knowledge of all aspects of veterinary medicine.

Dr. V. currently lives with her husband and son, along with a wire-haired Dachshund named Willson, a Goldendoodle named Goose, and two orange tabby cats named Doug and Leela. They enjoy traveling and all the outdoor activities South Carolina and the surrounding areas have to offer.

Dr.V is well-qualified to lead our clinical team as Medical Director, and we know she will remain a strong asset to the hospital!

🐾 Maggie’s Road to Recovery 🐾

Maggie came to us in a critical state, battling Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis (HGE)—a sudden and severe condition causing vomiting and bloody diarrhea, which can lead to rapid dehydration. Thanks to the incredible efforts of Dr. Bedwell and our Emergency team, Maggie has made a full recovery and is back to her normal, happy self! 💖

Her journey wasn’t easy, but with the right care and lots of love, she’s now eating well, drinking plenty of water, and enjoying her favorite neighborhood walks again.

We are so grateful to Maggie's owners for entrusting us with her care, and for sharing this wonderful update. Your kind words and Maggie’s recovery mean the world to us. 💓

Our dogs’ paws are just as sensitive as our feet. Here are some ways to protect your dog’s paws on hot pavement (or artificial grass):

🐾 Check the weather and take precautions before you take your pet outside. Asphalt temperatures can vary with air temperatures, cloud cover, wind, etc. For example, 77°F air temp could result in 125°F asphalt temp - and it only takes 60 seconds on 125°F asphalt for a dog's pads to burn.
🐾 Place the back of your hand on the ground for 10 seconds, if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog.
🐾 Walk early in the morning or late in the evening when surfaces are cooler.
🐾 If your pet can easily adapt to them, invest in a pair of booties to protect your pet's paws.

Symptoms of paw burn may include limping, refusing to walk, darker than usual or discolored pads, excessive licking or biting of feet, visible blisters, extreme redness, and missing skin or parts of pads.

If your pet experiences burnt paws, contact us at (864) 233-7650. We’re here for you around the clock, every day of the year.

Last year, Ginger was brought to Upstate Vet after a devastating house fire that left her with extensive burns to her head, eyes, legs, paws, and back, along with a severe lung injury. Her journey was incredibly challenging, but Ginger has made a remarkable recovery! 🤩

For 11 days, Ginger stayed in our ICU, receiving high-flow oxygen therapy and expert burn management. It wasn’t easy, but her resilience and the dedication of our team helped her pull through. Today, Ginger is not only a survivor—she's a symbol of hope and love. She is the sweetest girl, and a true testament on the power of care and compassion. 🧡 🐾

With summer weather upon us, it’s important to keep your pet well-hydrated! Generally, your pet should drink about one ounce of water for each pound of body weight. That may need to increase by 3-4x depending on their exposure to heat, activity levels, and diet.

Encourage your pet to drink more water by:
💧 Always supplying fresh water
💧 Clean the water bowl daily
💧 For pets that prefer running water, try a pet fountain
💧 Add wet food or more raw fruits and vegetables to their diet (just double-check that they are safe for your pet to consume)

Your pet may be dehydrated if they’re experiencing loss of appetite, reduced energy, lethargy, panting, dry eyes, nose, or gums, or loss of skin elasticity.

If your pet experiences dehydration, contact us at (864) 233-7650. We are available for emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Upstate Vet would like to give a big shoutout to all the amazing Pet Superheroes who have donated their blood and have helped save countless lives!

Did you know that pets can require life-saving blood transfusions for many of the same reasons humans do, such as injuries, surgeries, or when diseases cause the body to destroy its own blood cells.

The number of cats and dogs in need of blood transfusions has grown as the pet population continues to increase. The Upstate Vet blood bank relies on our dog and cat donors and their owners to help us provide this invaluable resource. We are so incredibly grateful for them! ❤️

Here are just a few of our recent blood donor superheroes!
