CHECK THE COLLAR! This can be a difficult week for pets who are afraid of loud noises/fireworks. Just in case, make sure the information on your pet's collar is up to date & accurate. Microchipping & GPS devices can work wonders, too. If they get scared and run away, you'll stand a better chance of getting them back. There are lots of little tricks out there. I've found the simple act of extra love & attention can do wonders when they're afraid.

BRIDGEPORT'S SIDEWINDER IS A NEW ADOPTABLE, AND HE'S QUITE A GUY! ❤
A 3-year-old Doberman Pinscher Mix, he's affectionate, brave, dignified, playful, protective, and an accomplished couch potato! He likes other dogs and seems OK with cats. A happy-go-lucky dude, Sidewinder hasn't let anything get him down — and this poor fella had cause as he was found abandoned with most of my hair gone. He just focuses on the fact that he's now I'm warm and safe, his hair is growing back, and his tummy is full, so everything is looking up! ❤
Looking for a handsome guy with a positive outlook? Sidewinder could be the one! Why not go meet him! Got questions first? Just contact the Bridgeport Shelter by emailing [email protected] or calling (203) 576-7727.

From Schwarzman Animal Medical Center

☀️ Summer begins today — and a major heat wave is right behind it. ⚠️

From overheating and sunburn to dehydration and heatstroke, extreme temperatures can be life-threatening for both dogs and cats.

This quick guide shares simple steps to help keep your dog safe in the summer heat. While it's especially important for brachycephalic breeds, dogs with dark coats, and those with underlying health conditions, high temperatures pose a risk to all dogs.

The safest place for your pet during extreme heat is indoors, ideally with air conditioning.

Far too often, well-meaning people will find a fawn left unattended and will assume it is an orphan. This usually ends tragically, when the fawn dies of stress in human care and the mother is left grieving her missing baby.

It’s very normal for fawns to be left unattended! When a doe needs to forage safely during the day, she will urge her fawn to lie very still and very quiet, so it stays undetected by predators. Most of the time, the fawn needs to be left exactly where it was found.

Believe it or not, this is just as true for fawns found beside roads as it is for fawns found in the forest. Many does will choose a ditch or shoulder as the place to leave their fawns. Although it looks like a scary choice to an onlooker, the fawn isn’t likely to get hit: it will stay completely still until its mother returns, and the presence of nearby traffic may even help to keep curious predators from getting too close.

This particular fawn was photographed in Wisconsin. Its mother was visible watching from nearby and came to reclaim her baby as soon as humans were out of sight.

Please do your part to keep fawns safe. Leave them where they are unless you see the mother’s body nearby or see clear signs that the fawn is starving, dehydrated, or distressed.
