Better By Design: Where did Australian Labradoodles come from?

In 1989, the first labradoodle was created by the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, combining a lab with a poodle to achieve a more allergy-friendly guide dog. While this Labradoodle breeding program was short-lived and discontinued, it did catch the attention of two forward-thinking breeders in Australia who began breeding these Labradoodles to a number of other dog breeds to produce litters with consistent conformation, coat type, and temperament.

Most often, the English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel were the breeds used with the labradoodle. However, it is reported that a few other dog breeds were also introduced into certain early lines. The combination of all these breeds makes up what we call the Australian Labradoodle today.
