🌞☀️ Keep Your Pets Cool and Safe This Summer! 🐾🐶🐱

As the temperatures rise, it's essential to ensure our furry friends stay safe and comfortable during the summer months. Here are some tips to keep your pets cool and happy:

Hydration is Key: Make sure your pets have access to fresh, clean water at all times, especially when outdoors. Consider adding ice cubes to their water bowl to keep it cool throughout the day.

Limit Outdoor Exercise: Exercise your pets during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening. Avoid strenuous activities during the hottest hours to prevent heatstroke and exhaustion.

Provide Shade: If your pets spend time outdoors, ensure they have access to shady areas where they can rest and escape the sun's heat. Consider setting up a canopy or umbrella in your backyard.

Never Leave Pets in Parked Cars: Even with the windows cracked open, temperatures inside parked cars can quickly soar to dangerous levels, leading to heatstroke and death. Never leave your pets unattended in a parked car, even for a few minutes.

Protect Their Paws: Hot pavement and sand can burn your pet's paw pads. When walking your dog, stick to grassy areas or walk during cooler times of the day. Consider using pet-safe paw balms or booties to protect their feet.

Know the Signs of Heatstroke: Symptoms of heatstroke in pets include excessive panting, drooling, rapid heartbeat, vomiting, and lethargy. If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer water, and seek veterinary care immediately.

Be Mindful of Overexertion: While it's essential to keep your pets active, be mindful of overexertion, especially for older pets or those with health conditions. Allow them to rest when needed and monitor their behavior for signs of fatigue.

By following these simple tips, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, healthy, and happy throughout the summer season. Let's make this summer a paws-itively wonderful time for our furry companions! 🐾💙

In Loving Memory of Sherman:

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved clinic cat, Sherman. Sherman came to our clinic as a kitten just over 18 years ago. He turned into a beautiful, gray fluff-ball. He tolerated us, his adoring human family, on most days which earned him the title of “Grumpy Old Man”. He enjoyed the company of our many guests in our lobby and was blessed to meet new friends everyday. He will be so dearly missed as a valuable member of the MerVet family. 🐾❤️

We would like to invite anyone who had the pleasure of loving Sherman to share their favorite pictures or stories of him.

Myths about Heartworm disease.....“My pet never goes outside, so there’s no way they could be infected.”
The American Heartworm Association notes that their owners described 25% to 30% of heartworm-infected cats as living “strictly” indoors. Moreover, mosquitoes can easily enter homes through open doors and windows. This is also a good opportunity to discuss the extra control many heartworm preventives provide against other parasites. Many parents are simply unaware of these benefits.

Myths about Heartworm disease....“Heartworm transmission isn’t a problem where I live.”
According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC), dogs have been diagnosed with heartworm disease in all 50 states and all 10 Canadian provinces. Further complicating matters, the American Heartworm Association (AHS) notes that unpredictable risk factors like the presence of wildlife reservoirs, the climate, and pet travel can fluctuate significantly from year to year.
