Wishlist Wednesday is winding down but we wanted to share our list with you in hopes that you might feel inclined to send some Benebone Chew toys for our dogs. The cold weather has had them unable to burn off their energy outside like normal, so we are hoping this might be a good alternative and give them something to do! Thank you in advance for helping make a day in the life of a shelter pet a little less stressful!

DON'T WAIT❗❗❗❗📢📢 If your pets must be outside (bring them in if you can), Get them protected from harsh weather right NOW. It's going to be 20 or below at night for a week straight.

Plastic and wooden dog houses including igloo houses are not meant to keep dogs from freezing. They will freeze in these. You can ask any humane society or animal control how many dogs a year they find, especially dogs with short hair like pit bulls, that have frozen while sleeping in these without any type of other insulation. Straw must be added during these times.

BELOW ARE MULTIPLE OPTIONS FOR BOTH CATS AND DOGS.

TRACTOR Supply has an 18 wheeler full of straw bales that you can break apart and fluff up it makes a huge amount of straw DO NOT USE BLANKETS IN FREEZING WEATHER. IT TAKES AWAY HEAT FROM THE ANIMAL AND CAN FREEZE TO THEM CAUSING THEM HYPOTHERMIA.

Use tarps to help block the wind and rain and do not forget that their water is going to freeze.

YOU CAN BUY PLASTIC STORAGE CONTAINERS FROM WALMART AND STUFF IT WAS STRAW FOR CATS AND LARGER ONES FOR DOGS. DO NOT CUT THE HOLE IN THE SIDE BIGGER THAN NEEDED TO KEEP HEAT IN AND OTHER ANIMALS OUT.

For those who are able and willing please put some extra straw in trash bags and drop them off to your neighbors or any house you see that has a pet that does not have proper insulation from the weather.

Happy Thursday morning! Cold weather is coming!! It is time to get your pets prepared!

Please get your outdoor pets ready for the impending cold snap next week - highs in the 30's and lows in the 20’s are coming!

BRING THEM INSIDE: The best option is to keep all pets indoors. However, if they must stay outside, ensure they have adequate protection from the harsh cold.

Remember:Straw is for Strays and Hay is for Horses!
INSULATE SHELTER: While a plastic or wooden doghouse can shield them from wind, it won't keep them warm without proper insulation. Use straw bedding or shavings - not hay or blankets - to insulate outdoor shelters. If you’re using straw to insulate a doghouse, it should be packed tightly along the sides and back. The dog should be able to burrow down into the straw for warmth. Bales of straw typically cost $10 or less at Tractor Supply.
Please call the police dept and ask for animal control or the Sherriff’s dept (if you live in the county) and report an animal you see housed outdoors without proper housing for the cold. They do not deserve to suffer!

Happy New Year's Eve! Please, please, please make sure your name and phone number are on your pet's collar, even if you just write on it on there with a Sharpie! We get in so many pets with no identification and there is no way for us to notify you and get your pet back home if we do not know how to reach you.
