What can I say! My chickens are all very photogenic😂
Demarcus played his part wonderfully in the video and I promise he was paid with snacks and snuggles.
I have 10 roosters! 8 of them were hand raised as babies, and the other two came to us as young adults.
How a chicken is raised, especially roosters, will make a huge impact on how they interact with you and others later on in life.
All of our roosters who we raised from chicks were equally loved, snuggled and cared for. And all 8 of them turned into gentle creatures and most importantly they are adult & child friendly.
We have two roosters who we didn’t hand raise as chicks.
Demarcus is the first rooster who came to us as an adult. His life was already shaped by what he went through as a young chicken. And I don’t think he had positive interaction with humans. When he came to us he was very unpredictable, and not human or chicken friendly in the least.
Silas was the other rooster. He was also a young adult when we found him. His life was different then Demarcus. He was probably raised as a indoor pet and loved very dearly, he didn’t have any fear or aggression towards us, he is very human and chicken friendly, & has never shown signs of aggression towards humans. (Like everrrr)
So my advice for good roosters?⬇️
When they are chicks try to get hands on time with them. Hold them, hand feed them, snuggle them. Just a few hours a day makes a difference. Once roosters become adults and go through their hormonal change, how much you interacted with them as chicks dictates their relationship with you as adults. It’s much easier to mold your relationship with your rooster if you start earlier.
If your trying to start a good relationship with a rooster who is an aggressive adult, it’s going to be a bit harder. You will need more patience, time, and there are going to be moments when one mistake can take the progress you’ve made a few steps back.
But as hard as it can may sound it’s not impossible.

Anyone else’s phone make those mini videos? I love looking through them because once in a while they’re actually good lol. But they are also bittersweet because although it captures a lot of good memories, it also captures a few chickens who aren’t with me anymore. It reminds me how life is so fragile and constantly changing. You never know what’s over the horizon.
Sometimes when I’m feeling down, the best thing is to have a cuddle bug on my lap. There’s only one issue with that… I don’t have one😂 it’s very rare for our chickens to want to be cuddled and pet by us and I try to respect that as much as I can. But that still leaves me sad and cuddle-bug-less. Yesterday Demarcus was up to his usual shenanigans and followed me down into the turtle coop looking for a fight. I decided it would do us both some good if I picked him up and put him in “time out”. He would have some time to think about why he’s mean (as if he would) and I get a snuggle bug to boost me😂What I didn’t realize is that he actually enjoyed it just as much I did, if not more. Once he was secured in my lap he totally melted. Not a single crow of defiance, not a single attempt to leave either. I was totally surprised that he didn’t try to leave or show any signs of not liking it. By the end of it I felt better, and he left freshly fluffed and with a facial😂.It also made me wonder why is he so aggressive if he’s so calm in my lap? Whenever we are near he will come over and tidbit us, but not in the usual “have a snack” way but more of a “can you catch these hands” way. Ever since we realized his tricks we never stay close enough to “catch his hands”😂 but it’s making me wonder if sometimes he’s trying to call us over because he wants to be loved a little extra. Because he’s so mean to us we hardly snuggle or hold him and the kids know he’s off limit because he’s dangerous. Because all of our other roosters are child safe they get extra pets and lap time whereas he doesn’t. So I’m thinking it’s a possibility when he came down to me and I assumed he was looking for a fight he was actually asking for attention. Demarcus is a #rescuerooster who we found after he was a young adult, so his early life is a mystery to us. It’s a possibility he wasn’t socialized with humans and what he learned before comin
Sometimes I like to add full cloves of crushed garlic in the water to, especially during the colder months when the chances of respiratory issues are higher. Disclaimer🐓I am not a chicken vet, just a chicken keeper. All my information is knowledge I have gained along my chicken journey, and should not be treated as advice from a vet.
There’s no better feeling then when your chicken’s actually enjoy the roost you made for them lol😂 today as Gustav tried out the new roost, he also had a human companion try it out to. My two flocks are constantly getting new roosts. Sometimes it’s because I’m renovating the coops, and other times it’s because I realize they are not made with the best interest for the chickens in mind. I’ve learned a lot about my chickens over the years. A lot of things that I couldn’t learn in books or online articles. Things only they could teach me. One of these things is just how important socializing really is to them. Every single day without fail my two flocks gather together around mid day to roost and relax together. It’s one of the rare times when Demarcus isn’t causing mayhem. And no roosters are fighting through the fence. Nobody is laying eggs, there’s no rush or crowing, and there is a heavy peace in the air. It reminds me of a warm Sunday afternoon. My hens have a roost that fits almost everyone (not pictured because I took it down to to fix) but my roosters only had two tires in that area. Without fail each day two roosters roost on the tires and the rest stand solemnly in a large huddle. Trying to be as close as possible to the flock on the other side. I actually have a larger roost on the other side of the cage that’s big enough to support all the roosters. But they don’t want it because it’s not close to the other flock. So I improvised and made this one. I can’t wait until tomorrow when all the roosters get to try it out. There’s something so special about when chickens roost together to relax. It’s one of the rare times throughout the day when they stop all of their chicken duties to relax. It amazes me how wonderfully God has created all animals, and given each of them time to rest as well.
