It's a blustery December day over here. The kits have joined forces and are all snuggled in one nest box. They look warm and cozy. Mama Buns are nearby keeping an eye on things.
I cleaned out the other nest box the other day, perhaps that is why they've abandoned it. It will be time for a full cleaning of the colony soon, and I should take advantage of the dry weather.... but the wind bites!

Of course she has to sleep right in my strawberry bed 🤦‍♀️But she's getting old and deaf so she gets a free pass.... we'll see how the strawberries feel about the abuse. Hopefully I'll still get a few next spring.
I managed to save a couple plants and relocated them into a large pot for now. Hope they survive the winter.... I usually forget about them and they don't always make it through the winter cold spells in pots.

These little guys are so friendly and curious. The puppy likes to put his head in there and greet them when I open the door to put their feed in. After he steps back they all crowd around d the doorway peeking out. One of them even jumped out for a moment. Don't worry, I caught and put him back before he got very far.

Those of you who guessed pumpkin for this mystery plant were correct!

Here's the story -

Last year I had some pumpkins that I didn't get to before they were a bit past their prime. I set them out by the shed and promptly forgot about them.

Over the winter the dogs sneakily snacked on them and probably ingested quite a few seeds. I usually clean the doggy doo regularly, but with all the rain we have, it's easy for things like seeds to get left behind.

This little plant came up randomly in the middle of a pathway in a place that seems to be a favorite potty spot. It was hard to tell what it was at first, so I put a cage around it and let it be.

Well it's turned into this huge pumpkin.... at least it sure looks like a pumpkin.... anyone know when to harvest this thing? 🎃🤔

These two puppers have earned their keep this summer. So far they've caught two rats while I haven't caught any. Their presence also seems to be keeping the rats a little further away than last year.
I do still see signs of rats here and there, but most of my grapes are untouched and I haven't spotted a single rat on the bunny cams. No signs of them getting into the colonies either.
I wouldn't say puppies are easy everyday or efficient rat catchers... yet... but an improvement over last year in an appreciable way.

Super excited about my grape harvest this year. I have two varieties of grapes, both green/yellow, but one is seeded and the other is not.

The seedless grape always does very well. I've had it for longer and it's off towards the back of the yard. The rats rarely bother it for some reason.

The seeded grape is up on the deck and is a few years younger. Last year was it's first big production, but the rats got almost every single grape before they were even really ripe!

Needless to say I was so sad and determined to do something about it. My rat trap started failing in late winter and I haven't caught a rat since. However, the grapes haven't been touched this year so far.... I suspect the presence of pups this spring and summer has deterred the rats a bit.

Fingers crossed these lovely clusters stay put foe the next few weeks so they can fully ripen. I'm pulling off grapes that look ready for "testing purposes" and they are seriously like little balls of candy.

As the babies grow, I like to make sure there are multiple water sources. They have a bowl and this bottle. The last couple weeks it's been emptying within a few hours, way faster than normal... I don't like spending money if I can fix it so I sat there and tried to figure out what the problem was to see if I could salvage it.
Low and behold - I found a suspicious, puppy tooth sized hole right at the top. Air was being sucked through and causing it to leak. I didn't want to put super glue in case it's toxic to the buns so I tried some pine sap to block the hole.
Ha! It worked! Bottle saved, money saved, bunnies watered! I'm not always that creative, but I love when those moments hit.

Between trying to earn a living and keeping up with life, I've dropped the ball on posting as well as the garden.

Here is my Hubbard squash the kiddo planted. Thankfully the rabbit tractor is currently unoccupied. That squash is totally engulfing it, I should probably move it before it gets buried.

The rest if the garden is similar, the tomatoes haven't been pruned, the sunflowers are in chaos, the Jerusalem Artichokes are taking over. But the grapes are looking good and at least I've kinda sorta kept up with the watering.

Ha!!! This guy got more than he bargained for when he decided to follow me into the colony. He was pleased the bunnies would come up and sniff him, but he didn't know what to do about the one that climbed over him. His fault for squeezing down under the hutch - their favorite resting spot. He got lots of good sniffs in though and probably managed to nibble a few bunny berries. I think he's starting to see them as walking treat dispensers 🤢🤣

One of these is not like the others... 🤣

Yes, he insisted on jumping in when I gave them their morning snackies. Instead of pestering them, he put himself in the corner and just sat and watched them. Looks like he might end up being a good bunny protector after all.

So this is my mystery plant of the year. It randomly appeared in my heavily chipped pathway. I've watched it with interest as it's grown and even put a cage around it to protect it from the rambunctious pups. My top guesses were zucchini or pumpkin, but now I'm not so sure. Any other guesses?

Caught a peek of these babies peacefully tucked in their nest.

Sadly, my handbuilt hutch is starting to show wear and I can peek through some of the gaps now. On the bright side, it gives me glimpses of adorableness.

These little guys are just about a month old now and I've started to see them going up and down the ramp, nibbling their Mamas food, and exploring their space.

I'll probably have to reinforce the hutch after this litter. The babies are much harder on it than mama is and being mostly wood, it gets chewed on heavily. Yay, another project in the works!

Does anyone know what this guy is? I think his wing was damaged and he was having a hard time flying.

I'll let you in on a little secret.... I didn't plant these sunflowers this year.

I have two patches of crazy tall sunflowers and didn't plant a single one of them. Either the birds and squirrels left some seeds behind or the dirt I moved had leftover seeds I'm guessing.

These guys are now over 6 feet tall and thicker than my young maple tree. Everyday I'm surprised by how much they've grown all by themselves.

More flowers open up each day, stayed tuned for an upcoming video of them!

I struggle with the summer heat, freezing is more enjoyable than roasting. However, I do really love all the beauty that summer has to offer. Along with fresh fruits and vegetables, my garden is vibrant with beautiful colors from all the different flowers.
These are my clematis vines that intermingle with my grape vines. I chop them to the ground every winter and every summer, they're back prettier than ever.
I'm not big on non edible plants, but these are quite lovely. I probably would have never planted them, but they were here when we bought the house. Fairly certain I abused them the first few years as I had no idea what they were, but they're hardy and have continued to flourish despite the lack of care.

Not my finest photography, but it's just been too hot to try to get good pictures. Of course both Mama Reeses and Carmelita decided to wait till 4th of July to have their babies. With the heat forecasted to be close to the 100s or more right into next week, it's going to be a long few days of me worried and checking them often.
Reeses babies should be fine, they're tucked in their nest partially underground in their colony, but Carmelita is my only hutch bun and the heat is aways worse there.
I found all her babies scattered around yesterday, but with the heat, they seemed comfortable. Interestingly, when I checked this morning, she had collected them somehow and tucked them back in the nest. Fingers crossed she keeps up the good work.

Happy Summer Solstice!

In all honesty, summer isn't really my favorite time of year. Don't get me wrong, I love that there's an abundance of fruits and all the great gardening stuff, but the heat always makes me worry about the buns.

I've noticed the colony bunnies do much better in the heat than most caged rabbits. They can stay close to the ground where it's cooler and they get big water bowls they can dunk in if they desire. They're also on the north side of the house and are mostly shaded, particularly during the hottest part of the day, so that helps.

I've never lost anyone due to heat *knock on wood* but that doesn't mean I don't worry. Some summers, I've put out frozen water ballons or frozen water bottles, but it's a hassle and half the time they rather chew on the plastic than snuggle up to the ice.

These three amigos came from my friendliest group so far. One of them got the chance to go live in a wonderful place up in Washington. I miss her little face, but happy to know she's in a great home. Another one will probably get the chance to prove her mama skills come fall. I don't really know why these guys were so super friendly, I didn't feel like I did any more socializing than usual. But they did grow up with the toddler running around their colony, so maybe that helped them realize I wasn't as scary 😂

So we did a thing. The lack of Bella’s presence was too much for me to handle, so I decided that fostering some puppies would be a great idea🤪

I did not take into consideration that I had just planted my tomatoes and Basil ... or that the strawberries and raspberries were almost ripe... or that I had carefully surrounded all my plants in wonderful rabbit p**p.

The pups were quite content to romp through the yard messing up my perfect compost piles and nibbling at all the ripe berries. Digging through my rabbit poo piles has been an extremely fun adventure as well.

I'm happy to report minimal casualties over all, though many of my delicate plants will now have stunted growth.

On the plus side, they've stomped through all my unmowed grass so it no longer needs to be trimmed and they've really defined the pathways through the garden.

Despite being garden godzillas, they've been fun to watch as they chase each other playfully through the yard. It's also really nice to have them follow me everywhere as I water and forage for the bunnies.

We ended up adopting the boy(the black one) and are hoping to find a good home for the girl. She is absolutely precious and such a joy to have around.
