Have you ever heard of a Kooikerhondje? We never had until now. We looked this breed up and found this: "a Kooikerhondje is a small spaniel-type dog breed of Dutch ancestry that was originally used as a working dog".

This is Taco. He is a Kooikerhondje. Adopted from a shelter in North Carolina about 7 years ago, Taco is guessed to be between 9-10 years old. He weighs 32 pounds. If Taco could talk, he would probably tell you he doesn't give a fig about what breed he is, he only wants to find a loving adoptive home where he can remain forever.

Taco has never lived with other dogs during his time with his current people. We are told he can get nervous when meeting new animals. Taco is "reserved" but will do the appropriate sniffing and try to match the energy level of the dog he is meeting. It sounds to us as though he may be fine to live with another mature, calm and friendly dog. Taco does not have much experience with cats, though he lived with one for a short time. Perhaps a dog savvy cat would be OK around Taco? Taco has done well with calm and gentle (older) children.

Taco's adopter should be willing and able to get him vetted and keep up on regular vet care as well as grooming when needed. He has a slight overbite, his teeth may need cleaning. We are told he is "walleyed"-another term we were unfamiliar with! A walleyed dog has one or both eyes that appear to be turned outward, giving them a "crossed-eyed" appearance. According to his humans, this does not affect Taco's sight.

This nice fellow sounds a bit unsure about new things. He has not had a home with stairs so he'd need to learn how to use them. Taco appreciates 2-3 leisurely walks a day. Reportedly very good on leash, he stays close but certainly enjoys time to sniff. Taco's people have taught him to respond to certain chirps and whistles. Those will be shared with Tacos adopters to help in his transition to his new life and new home.

Taco is accustomed to having someone around the house during the day. We are told he is fine to be left alone when it is necessary. To assure Taco can continue to be OK without company, one must plan on letting him settle in to learn a new routine. During the day, Taco will hang out in his bed or on the couch in the living room if allowed to do so. At night he sleeps on his own bed in his humans' bedroom.

Taco will let you know when he needs to go out to potty. Taco is said to have NEVER barked instead he makes tiny yip sounds. He loves snuggling in his stuffed toys and cuddling up in his blankets. Taco is a gentle soul who is described as "very loving and quiet".
