Please be aware of this scam that is happening in our area. If anyone calls you claiming to be from a vet clinic and wanting payment over the phone, please hang up and call that vet clinic directly to confirm that it is not a scam. Stay safe out there! 🐾

**** SCAM ALERT ****
We wanted to make you aware of a new scam that has targeted pet owners on this page.

The scammer reaches out to the owner of a lost pet posing as a local animal clinic and spoofs their phone number. They tell you that your missing pet was hit by a car and needs surgery and will use specific details like an intersection that makes sense as well as personal information about the owner to sound credible. We assume the next ask would be to send money for the pet’s surgery.

The situations we are aware of thankfully didn’t get that far. The scammer hung up when owner requested a proof photo of their dog. In the other situation, the owner contacted the animal hospital directly and the lie was exposed when they didn’t have their pet.

Unfortunately, we can’t keep scammers from gleaning info from our posts. However, there are reasons why we regularly hold back some of the details of a lost pet situation (such as description of collar, harness, other distinguishing marks and gender) and why our default is not to post phone numbers. We also do not post cash rewards as we’ve experienced some very bad outcomes from people motivated by money to find a pet – we also believe a cash reward could make an owner a target of a scammer.

Please keep this in mind when commenting on lost pet posts as well as on other lost pets pages/groups and be careful not to overshare specific identifying details.
