The posture of the German Shepherd dog not only affects functionality, but also hips, elbows and musculoskeletal health.

This is a letter I received from a perspective co owner of mine. German Shepherds can often have this kind of temperament even with the best breeding this is why going to obedience classes, and evaluating temperament (away from home) before you breed is so important ...Letter from Rio's Co -owner and she also owns a river daughter a few months ago she emailed That Mimic the river/ piper daughter passed her CGC but unfortunately Rio did not. I had placed Rio with her because I saw she was shy and would do better in a full time... in house home..

Hello! I hope all is well and congratulations on your two successful litters!

I just wanted to let you know that Rio is still showing fearfulness of children and visitors, more so than a general cautiousness. I know she's from different lines than yours, and seeing how persistent it is even though she's had many positive experiences with strangers, I believe it's genetic.

Since I started working as a dog trainer I've seen lots of German Shepherds and I know a general wariness of strangers is expected and even desired in the breed. One of the other trainers has Shepherds from working lines who are aloof and not interested in strangers except to watch them. But Rio is on the extreme end where she is fearful and wants to hide instead of just observe from a distance.

This even applies to children she's seen before who have nicely handed kibble to her and never harmed her: she is just skiddish by nature.

Mimic is the opposite extreme for Shepherds: totally friendly with everyone and is pretty much fearless just like her father!

I just bring this up because maybe Rio has traits you wouldn't want to breed into your lines. She still listens well and is smart but doesn't have the confidence I see in so many of your dogs. I would not trust Rio unsupervised with adult strangers or children at all, while Mimic I know would be fine.

If you want to evaluate her yourself I'd be willing to bring her over for you to see, and If this does affect your decision to use Rio in your breeding program, I'm happy to pay the rest of the cost she would have been at full price as she's still a beloved pet.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

Please take this to heart. And remember these numbers represent only reported cases! Maybe only one percent of what really occurs.
