Thanks everyone for your understanding me taking some time off last week for my heart treatment. 5 years ago i had a cardiac ablation (treatment for a heart arrythmia specifically a-fib). A catheter is placed in a vein in your groin and advanced into your heart to burn (ablate) tissue misfiring. I did well on meds to this day despite my life threatening struggle with covid 2 years ago. Now I'm just trying to get off meds. No repercussions from covid. Last week I had a touch-up ablation at UNMC. Took 4 hours (first one was 5 hours), 140 burns and 8 shocks (defibrillations) to keep in ryhym so they could direct my treatment. Took me a little longer than expected to return. I'll be back tomorrow am with a smile on! Ready to get back at it. I'm doing great. Amazing people out there in Omaha. See you all in the morning and days to come! Im not going anywhere. Im doing what i love; helping people, working on old dodge trucks, milling some lumber, and watching my kids pursue their interests. Every day is a blessing! Doc.

This is Sherman. 11 yo lab who eats everything on the farm from last week. Really sick and straining to go. Radiographs revealed pelvic inlet foreign body obstruction and severe upstream f***l impaction. Depressed and multiple enemas did not reveal success overnight. Contemplating calling it. Had been going on for a little while. Came in next day thinking the worst and prepared but alot brighter, still sick. We laid it all out about an exploratory and owner rolled the dice on surgery. Sherman had a pelvic fecolith (super hard stool mixed with hair, bone fragments, and unknown). The colon was so full of stool that that the normal diameter of 1 inch was 6 inches for a length of 24 inches. The best part is I was able to through the abdominal incision apply enough positive pressure in the pelvic inlet to get the fecolith out where I could digitally get it out of his bum. 1/2 gallon of stool followed. No entrance to his colon surgically. Went back on food next morning. Lucky. Wooh! Really happy. He was so much better next day! Poor guy. Glad to see you feeling better buddy. Thankyou owners for rolling the dice on me and staff!

Boo our 9 month old pitbull patient with a piece of rubber toy in his small intestine got to go home this afternoon on a strict feeding regimen. He even got a distemper vaccination and oral wormer for here in a few days. Yay! Doc.

Boo, the 9 month old pit bull pup from RO. swap today has been diagnosed and will go into surgery first thing in the morning with a foreign body obstruction. He's gonna do great! Thankyou to all the people who made numerous generous donations that allow me and my staff to do this! You genuinely are making a difference. Watch for updates tomorrow. Doc Swain.

Hey guys. I want to tell you about another somewhat rare cool case I seen 2 days ago to put it on your radar. Year and change golden/doodle vomiting every meal for 3 weeks. 100% otherwise. Acting great. Treated for garbage can gut very appropriately. No response. Xrays and palpation of abdomen and no evidence of obstruction. Serum chemistry profile normal. No fever. Differentials: Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Atypical Addison's disease, potential regurgitation, eating to fast (inhaling food-starving), and what we found. I had a vet senior year vet school in community practice (routine vet care, shots etc.) 20 years ago tell me in young patients with abrupt chronic vomiting after a meal to never rule out a stomach worm called physaloptera. Few things to add. Almost always pets who are young and less immunocompetant. Almost always, single solitary worm. Intermittent shedders of eggs; f***l depends on sample timing. Parasite eggs in general are not very dense. We float them in a dense solution to concentrate our sample so we can look in the scope at a small sample and increase sensitivity. Physaloptera eggs are dense and don't float well. They are there you just miss em' due to nonshedding sample or lack sensitivity in flotation. Finally, heartworm preventative does not get them because they take alot higher dose of wormer. I tentatively diagnosed and treated this dog with a higher dose extra label of wormer for 2 days before scoping him. Should of done it. Today, we did endoscopic upper gi exam. This little bo**er was still alive when we grabbed him with the scope. Small worm but, this is not just a localized reaction. The stomach lining reacts violently to these guys. Pi**ed off. Intestinal worms don't like stomach acid, but consider this little guy who doesn't care about Ph for your young, chronic vomiting dogs acting fine otherwise. Doc .

In the midst, why vaccinate for known pathogens while we don't know the cause? (Kennel cough and influenza in dogs) Several years ago while I was practicing beef feedlot medicine we learned a few things but, now had scientific proof even though the industry already knew for years. When we vaccinated cattle on arrival with a multiple antigen (virus) product they found that when boostered in a couple weeks with a vaccine that contained only a fraction of the virus types (1 of the five virus agents) that even though the booster shot did not contain the infectious agent per se; the immune response both humoral and cell mediated were enhanced for all agents. You have a population of dogs likely already exposed to whatever causing this. Now adapted and more specific and pathogenic. That is the logic for vaccinating for known pathogens. I'm sure it applies to our normal distemper, rabies, and injectable immunostimulant products as well.

The benefits of vaccines have been centred on their specific effects on subsequent infections by target pathogens. Recent studies, however, have opene…
