Smitty is a three year old Pit Bull with three legs, otherwise known as a tripod. Smitty had his left front leg amputated when he was a puppy due to injuries he had when found as a stray. Massage is important for tripod dogs-when a dog loses a limb, their balance shifts on to the remaining legs. This increases stress and may lead to injury or pain in the remaining legs.

To quote my mentor, Jonathan Rudinger at PetMassage “When one stifle is repaired surgically, the opposing knee is often susceptible to injury.” We can strengthen both the repaired and opposing knee through massage.
