Ohio SPCA

Ohio SPCA The Ohio SPCA intercedes on behalf of all animals and brings about change to situations and practices in which cruelty, neglect, or suffering exists.

The Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals works to prevent and stop cruelty to animals throughout Ohio. The Ohio SPCA is the leading statewide organization for rescuing animals. Hundreds of companion and farm animals are rescued and rehabilitated by the Ohio SPCA every year. Additionally, many animals are helped through educating their owners about proper care. Whenever possible, we

help provide feed or medical care to families or individuals faced with a temporary financial hardship. Every humane organization dreams of the day when cruelty to animals can be reduced to the point of elimination. The Ohio SPCA (formerly known as the Ohio Humane Education Association) was formed in 1983 to help bring this dream to reality through humane education.Founded by two school teachers, the goal was to educate adults and children about the need to be kind to all animals. Ohio SPCA Goals:

- To extend to present and future generations humane education, which will lead to an awareness of the need for people to be responsible and kind stewards over animals.

- To rescue and rehabilitate abused animals and then place them in new forever homes.

-To bring reform to Ohio's county dog shelters through eliminating the use of inhumane euthanasia such as gas chambers and through promoting proactive adoption practices. Those of us involved in Ohio SPCA believe that many people are unaware of inhumane practices and the suffering that many animals are forced to endure. No one likes to talk about pain, suffering, and death, but change can’t take place unless the facts are presented to the public. Adults and children must be educated about problems such as pet overpopulation, factory farming, and animal experimentation. Once they know and understand what has been hidden from them, a percentage of these people will at least speak out against the inhumanity or actively decide to help. http://www.ohiospca.org

⚠️Please keep outdoor animals protected from the cold.

As temperatures drop, it’s essential to protect outdoor animals. Here’s how you can help:

Shelter: Bring animals indoors if possible (don’t worry, we’re not talking about your horses or cows). If they must stay outside, provide a sturdy, insulated shelter elevated off the ground. The shelter should have a floor, three sides, a roof, and an entrance covered with a flap of material to block wind. If you add a flap of material over the door, be sure your dog isn't frightened of the new material, keeping it from going inside of it's shelter to get out of the elements.

Add straw inside and around the shelter for extra warmth—avoid using fabric as it can freeze when wet.

Size: The shelter should be just large enough for the animal to stand, turn around, and lie down while retaining body heat.

Nutrition & Hydration: Outdoor animals burn more energy to stay warm. Provide extra food and ensure their water supply is unfrozen.

Please share this post to help keep animals safe and warm this winter. Thank you.

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday. Here is one of the happy tails that your donations make possible.
This is Lemon, one of the many success stories of our innovative cat socialization program. He arrived at our shelter as a stray with his brother. Lime was more social and was adopted quickly. To help him overcome his shyness, Lemon spent six weeks in the program learning to trust people. After graduation, he was immediately adopted into his forever home. And the icing on the cake of this happy tail is that Lemon won a featured spot in the 2025 Ohio SPCA Calendar of Companions.

On November 25th, animal cruelty investigators with the Ohio SPCA and Humane Society responded to a cruelty complaint regarding multiple cats in Allen County. Investigators removed 39 cats living in horrific conditions. The cats suffer from untreated illnesses and wounds because they have lived in these conditions for years without medical care. Medical treatment for parasites, abscesses, and ear, eye, and upper respiratory infections will be required.

Animal hoarding is almost always linked to mental illnesses such as compulsive disorders, depression, and/or anxiety. According to the Animal Legal Defense Fund, it is likely that up to 250,000 animals each year are victims of hoarders, which makes it number one for animal cruelty cases in communities across the country. The Ohio SPCA and Humane Society has dealt with numerous holding cases involving cats, dogs, rabbits, and birds. This is just one of several animal hoarding cases from which we have rescued cats and dogs this year alone.

Because of the large number of victims in this case, our resources are stretched to the limit. Please consider donating to our Emergency Medical Fund so that we can provide the medical care that these precious felines need. These cats and kittens will be available for adoption when they are healthy.

What a surprise when we found Domino at the top of the stairs in the garage one morning. Apparently, his breakfast wasn't served on time (his time), so he had to break out of his cage. Maybe he did it to prove he is a demolition expert. He's still in his castration quarantine for a couple more weeks.

As we announced in our last post, volunteers will not be permitted to walk dogs until we have trained staff and a behaviorist to work with them. That decision was precipitated by a serious injury that one of our dogs caused (Rascal). Rascal has not been euthanized, but he will not be available for adoption until our behaviorist can work with him to reduce the risk of repeating the injury.

We deeply appreciate all of our volunteers. Our new policy is intended to protect them as well as protecting all of our animals. Some people are now making false and misleading posts about our policy, that require us to devote time and effort to responding to ridiculous accusations instead of caring for our animals. Please take a minute to find out the truth before commenting on things that you choose not to understand.

As of November 18, the Board of Directors suspended the volunteer dog walking program. We value the contribution of volunteers and understand that they are an integral part of running a Humane Society. However, after several recent incidents involving injuries to dogs and volunteers, this is the best decision for the health and safety of the dogs and our staff and volunteers.

We have engaged the services of a professional dog trainer/behaviorist, who will institute a training program, starting with our staff, including the two dog walkers we have hired. Once the new protocols are in place, we will revisit whether we will add volunteers and train them to walk dogs. In the meantime, there are other opportunities for volunteers at the shelter.

Currently the dogs are being walked three times during weekdays and twice on the weekends. The afternoon walks include training sessions. Once we hire a third dog walker, they will be walked three times on the weekends.

Our main priority is the health and safety of the shelter's animals.

Throwback Thursday: BoBeau, our dark brown Jersey steer, was rescued from Allen County in 2017. He was tied up in a muddy field, emaciated and dehydrated, with no access to grass, hay, or water. After his friend at the farm sanctuary, Bambi, passed away, he bonded with a new rescue, Bam Bam, also a Jersey steer. They became inseparable when Bam Bam was old enough to join BoBeau in the pasture.

Those eyes can see all!
Fruit Basket certainly rocked our world when she came to us back in April, with her litter of just born babies. She was very protective of them! Now that they are grown and she’s on her own, she has cooled off. She is looking for a family that will give her time to adjust to a new space. Also, FB hates men, there’s no cutting corners there. She’s looking for a ladies only home and would do best with no kids under 5. Slow introductions with other cats are needed.

We are located at 3606 Elida Road, Lima. All available cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped.
Stop by during our operational hours Wednesday-Friday 2:00pm-7:00pm or Saturday noon-4:00pm to meet all of our adoptable cats! Applications can be downloaded on our website, ohiospca.org and sent to: [email protected]

Our handsome friend Blaze is ready to find a furever home!
Blaze is a ~2 year old German Shepherd/Husky mix. He is shy towards new people at first, but once he trusts you he will be your shadow. He is the most loyal guy you could ask for! Blaze would do best with no kids under 5 in the home as he can be easily spooked. A meet and greet with any other dogs in the home is required, but he did live with many others in the past and did fine! Blaze needs a home with no cats. This handsome fella is ready to meet you!

If you are interested in adopting, please download an application at ohiospca.org and then email once complete to [email protected].
We are located at 3606 Elida Rd. in Lima.
