Speak for the Unspoken

Speak for the Unspoken We save special needs dogs and give them their best lives. SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue located in the Columbus, Ohio area.
(90)

We're a 501(c)(3) foster based pet rescue located in the central Ohio area, but with fosters over a 5 state area including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We are a foster based rescue, devoted to both animal rescue and education. We focus our rescue efforts on special needs animals, most often those with hearing and vision impairments. Most of the animals we save are double mer

le Australian Shepherds born with vision and/or hearing deficits due to inappropriate merle to merle breeding practices. We believe special needs dogs are capable of living happy and healthy lives, and we work to educate the public about these amazing animals. Our Mission statement is “Special needs, good deeds. We see possibilities, not disabilities.” Our mission reflects the fact that we also will assist any animal in need whether it be an exceptionally difficult medical case---like cataract surgery to return vision to an otherwise normal Aussie, or a litter of puppies at risk of parvo in a shelter environment. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.

Hi, I'm Chick Pea!

I'm a low-energy, veggie-loving lady looking for love in a no-dogs, no-cats, no-kids household. You might think I'm asking too much, but I'm worth it! I'm old enough to be trusted alone all day, don't require much exercise, make the cutest snorts and snarfles, looooove car rides, and am a good girl at the vet. Plus, I've got perfect bloodwork for a 7-9 year old dog. Maybe better than yours! Oh, I forgot that these baby blues don't do much, so I'm pretty much blind. My eyes may get worse with age, but I will impress you with my super hearing and ability to map new spaces.

I am okay with apartment living, but I’d love a quiet place. I thrive on routine and knowing what's going on, so if you have many visitors or changes, I'm not the one for you. Because I can't see and have herding instincts, I sometimes react to unexpected movements or sounds. I worked with a trainer and have learned all the essential techniques for coping with new things like visitors, loud noises, and passing by other dogs. My foster mom will help you practice everything.

You should know that I really love my foster mom, so I'll be pretty confused when she's not around, and I'll need you to be patient with me and help me adjust to all the new things. An experienced dog owner would be best for me - I need you to be in charge and look out for me so I can just be a relaxed, lazy doggo and live my best life.

Even though I'm pretty picky, everyone at Speak! loves me so much and they really want me to find the forever home I deserve!

I am currently being fostered in Columbus, Ohio. I would do best in a home without young children or fur siblings. I am spayed, microchipped, and up to date on all vaccines and preventions. To meet me, please complete an adoption application at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

**Thank you for your interest in Coal! He now has a pending adoption but we have plenty of other kitties available to meet!**

Meet Coal!

Coal is an 8-week-old male Domestic Long Haired Tabby cat. He was found in a drainage pipe by some amazing people that got him into rescue.

If you are looking for a cat that loves to make biscuits, this kitten is for you. He is known to make them in the air while sleeping and while walking. Coal’s personality is starting to shine and he is all about cuddling with you on your lap once he has played with his favorite mouse or playing chase the feet and hands under the blanket. He is also in love with the foster’s dog and will often snuggle up to her when he falls asleep.

Coal is negative for all viruses and is up to date on all preventions. He will also have all vaccines and be neutered. He is being fostered in Columbus, Ohio.

If you are looking for a sweet playful kitten with an amazing purr Coal will be the perfect addition to your family.

Meet Chase!

Chase is a 5-year-old male mixed breed weighing 40 pounds. He is Australian Cattle Dog 46%, Australian Shepherd 31%, Plott Hound 8%, Treeing Walker Coonhound 8%, and American Foxhound 7% to be exact!

He is potty-trained, crate-trained, and good with other dogs. Chase would loooove a playful canine sibling; he really enjoys running and playing with other dogs. He would be an excellent addition to a large property full of animals and places to run. He will thrive in an active home, where he is able to stay busy with lots of walks and outside time. He needs space to run so a fenced in yard is recommended. He is a bit vocal so apartment life is not for him.

Chase loves new people and is constantly alert on walks. He does well with kids but would need to be in a home with kids over 10 due to his energetic and playful personality! He is a funny boy and recently discovered that he loves playing with the hose He has managed to figure out how to turn it on by himself!

His foster discovered that he has an amazing vertical jump and can spring into the air. He excels at agility and loves to complete the challenges. This could be a fun activity for the whole family. His foster is taking him to behavioral training classes where he is quickly learning new things. He barks anxiously at bikes but responds well to positive reinforcement.

Chase is very intelligent and treat-motivated. This bodes very well for his continued training. After spending time outside playing or going to daycare where he plays all day with his friends, Chase wants to cuddle with his person. He is very sweet and affectionate!

Chase is neutered, microchipped, and updated on all vaccines/preventatives. He is being fostered in Westerville, OH. If you are interested in meeting him, please email [email protected] 🐾

Meet Yin and Yang!

Yin and Yang are adorable black and white male kittens. Two beautiful 3-month-old kittens, opposites but interconnected and counter balanced in search of their forever loving home ♥️ They were rescued from a hoarding situation in Michigan. They were found thin and flea infested.

After going home with a good samaritan, they received lots of food and flea treatment. Shortly afterwards they made their three-leg volunteer transport to Columbus, Ohio to be part of Speak! for the Unspoken.

Yin and Yang are wonderful happy little boys that have quickly acclimated to their foster home. They are both playful and enjoy the company of their cat and dog foster siblings. Yin is more timid and laid-back while Yang tends to be a little more outgoing. Yin a black triangular shaped patch above his right eye while Yang has more of a black mask on his face.

They are friendly boys who enjoy playing with their toys, chasing each other and running through tunnels. They usually end up falling asleep on a cat tree or a cozy little bed.

Yin and Yang are bonded pair but could be adopted separately if they have other playmates in the home. They would be a fun great addition to any home.

They are being fostered in Grove City, Ohio. Prior to adoption Yin and Yang will be utd on their vaccinations , microchipped and neutered. If you would like some balance in your life apply at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

11/19/2024

Shasta is a five month old spayed female French Bulldog puppy. She is a very sweet girl looking for a wonderful forever home. She is currently being fostered in Battle Creek, MI.

This sweet girl found her way to the rescue after being born with hydrocephalus. That means that she was born with water on her brain. She takes twice daily medication to prevent possible seizures. In her two months in foster care, she has been a very healthy and normal puppy besides a single seizure. However, this is certainly something for potential adopters to consider. It would be strongly encouraged to establish Shasta with a veterinary neurologist so that if needed in the future, a veterinary client patient relationship already exists. It is unlikely that Shasta will live a normal French Bulldog lifespan. However, she is such a happy girl and she deserves to be spoiled and live her best life with someone who loves her.

Shasta gets along great with other dogs and cats. She is fine with dogs of all sizes, however, due to her hydrocephalus, care should be taken to not knock her around. Therefore, larger dogs need to be capable of playing gently with her or be uninterested in rough housing. Children in the home should be older as dropping Shasta could pose further dangers than dropping a “normal” dog.

This sweet girl is doing well with potty training. She goes to the door often to alert you that she needs to go outside and will bark when crated if she wants out. She does well in a crate though does whine at times if she has not received enough exercise for the day. She loves to be with people and loves cuddling up to watch tv. She loves being held and just wants to be wherever the humans are. She is relatively mellow for a puppy. She loves cuddling with other dogs and cats. Other animals in the home are not necessary though she does like to play with other dogs. A fenced in yard would be preferred but we would consider a home without.

Apply to meet her at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Ever wondered what life is like with a deaf dog? 🦻🏻🐕

It’s just as full of love and joy—with a few unique quirks! 🐶 Deaf dogs rely on visual cues and touch, building a special bond based on trust and understanding. They’re attentive, loving, and capable of learning commands in their own way. ❣️

At Speak!, we believe that every dog—deaf, blind, or otherwise—deserves a family who sees their potential, not their limitations.💙 By adopting a special needs dog, you’re not just giving them a chance; you’re embracing a loyal friend for life who will thrive in a home filled with patience and compassion.

This Giving Tuesday, help us continue our mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome deaf and special needs dogs. Together, we can create more stories of love and second chances.

Hi, I’m Sylvia!

I’m a young female cat, maybe 1-2 years old. I was found at the park on a hot hot day and am so thankful my foster mom brought me inside! I took a minute to warm up to my new environment, but I’m realizing I’m the perfect inside cat.

Now I love head scratches, pets, and belly rubs! I love being by humans, I’m just a bit shy at first. I’m still figuring out other pets, but if I have some time with them I can get a little more comfortable. I’m perfect at using the litterbox and haven’t even tried to scratch up anything in my foster home! Everyone who meets me says I’m the sweetest girl.

I am spayed, microchipped, negative for FIV, and up to date on vaccinations. Are you my forever home? I’m being fostered in Grove City, Ohio! www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

ALERT - Retirement Celebration!

This absolute sweetheart, Cinnabon, has received a freedom ride from a breeding operation and is adjusting very well to a pampered dog life. Even though she is 10 years young, she is alert, healthy, and ready to enjoy her golden years. She is deaf, has no sight in her left eye and impaired sight in her right eye. But she doesn’t let this slow her down. She is an Australian Shepherd weighing 45 pounds. She is mostly potty trained, crate trained, and great with other dogs and kids.

She loves exploring and her stub tail wags a lot. She has found that it is fun to pull on rope toys and is starting to carry them around. Sometimes she even likes to sit and watch tv.

Cinnabon loves to follow her people around and LOVES being pet. She just wants to love you and you to love her. She had a lot of matts and “stuff” in her hair when she came to us so we shaved her hair to help her feel better. It is growing back in and we expect it to be back to long, full and lush in a few months. She also had a sunburn on her nose and tip of her tongue. Both are healing very well.

Her wish list for her retirement in her adoptive home includes:
- Lots of petting and love
- A tv to watch. She really doesn’t have any preference as long as the pictures are bright and there is a lot of movement.
- A soft blanket or bed to lay on.
- Rope toys to pull on and carry around.
- Opportunities for frequent long naps.
- Someone who understands that while she needs exercise, she is 10 years young and isn’t up for long, fast-paced hikes.
- A cage. 1 - It is like a safe place for her but she uses it less and less as she becomes comfortable in her new home. 2 - She is still having accidents if left out overnight but doesn’t mess her cage if in it.

She gets up and down steps without any issues and loves to explore her foster home’s fenced yard with her foster siblings.

She is being fostered in Columbus, Ohio. If you are ready to celebrate her retirement with her, please apply through Speak! For The Unspoken. She will be spayed, have a dental, and be up to date on vaccines by the time she is ready for her new home. https://www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Oscar!

Oscar and his siblings were rescued from a large dumpster after an eviction. They were only approximately 2 weeks old, found crying and alone. Luckily they made their way to SPEAK. Fosters bottle fed them and ensured they were safe and went to the vet.

Oscar is an adorable little guy. He's as personable as he is beautiful. Oscar enjoys climbing on the cat trees, jumping platforms before settling down for a nap. He enjoys interacting with the others in his foster home; whether the other cats, his big dog sister or foster parents. He's curious and playful, overall a very sweet boy.

It will probably feel comforting to come home to a sweet little guy, you can apply to have a wonderful furry friend at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Oscar is being fostered in Grove city, Ohio. He will be neutered, microchipped and UTD on all vaccines before adoption.

Speak’s Mission

SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue headquartered in the Columbus, Ohio area, but with fosters all over the midwest. We also work with a puppy mill rescue group to save those animals discarded from the mills as "no longer useful". Many of these cast offs are also special needs. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.
