Speak for the Unspoken

Speak for the Unspoken We save special needs dogs and give them their best lives. SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue located in the Columbus, Ohio area.
(100)

We're a 501(c)(3) foster based pet rescue located in the central Ohio area, but with fosters over a 5 state area including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We are a foster based rescue, devoted to both animal rescue and education. We focus our rescue efforts on special needs animals, most often those with hearing and vision impairments. Most of the animals we save are double mer

le Australian Shepherds born with vision and/or hearing deficits due to inappropriate merle to merle breeding practices. We believe special needs dogs are capable of living happy and healthy lives, and we work to educate the public about these amazing animals. Our Mission statement is “Special needs, good deeds. We see possibilities, not disabilities.” Our mission reflects the fact that we also will assist any animal in need whether it be an exceptionally difficult medical case---like cataract surgery to return vision to an otherwise normal Aussie, or a litter of puppies at risk of parvo in a shelter environment. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.

**Courtesy Post - Use contact information below.**

Hi there! My name is Tormund. I bet you are wondering how I have such a cool name. My mom is my rescuer and said when I was kitten, Game of Thrones was very popular and that I was silly, strong and confident like Tormund! I am now a 5-year-old male and weigh 12 pounds.

My original family gave me up after finding out that I had diabetes. I lost a lot of weight and had to go to the bathroom a lot. Don’t be scared…it’s not contagious! I need to be on a special diet (I currently eat Koha limited ingredient canned food) that is high protein and low carb food. I love food…especially treats! I get fed once in the morning and then get my insulin shot and then again in the evening and get my insulin shot. I take my shots like a pro!

My family now has two small dogs and three cats. I am not very good with dogs and I get so scared that I end up attacking them. My mom tried to do what she could, but I don’t think a life with dogs is good for me. There are also 3 cats and I LOVE other cats! But so far the road has been a bit bumpy. You see.. the cats are very bonded and they like the dogs… So they hiss at me a lot and won’t play with me…..even though I just want to play with them so badly! I have never hurt another cat or human. At first I may be shy and hide but once I get used to you….I love to cuddle and just be around you!

I am very happy go lucky! Mom says I always have a pep in my step. I love my toys and if you ever want to play chase with.. I am ready! Catnip is always fun! Did I mention I get the zoomies too? I love to run around and hide and play. I have a cat tree now that looks outside and taking naps there is my favorite!

When I am super content and feel safe, I love to roll over on my back and just fall asleep in the middle of the room! Did I mention I love to cuddle? I am really good at it and I love to make biscuits on your tummy if you let me too! And man when I purr…….its loud.

I am just a happy guy, lucky to be healthy and loved. I hope someone will see me on here and look past my special needs and actually see me….and see that I am worth the extra work! My mom is sad that she has to give me up, but right now I live in a separate room apart from the other animals. So if you have room in your heart for me, and there is no chance of dogs, please give me a chance to be part of your family!

I am located in Columbus, Ohio. I hope to meet you soon!

Meet Lillie!

This tiny Yorkie mama was saved by a puppy mill. She is estimated to be around 7-8 years old and weighs 13 pounds.

She has been decompressing in a foster home with other dogs, who are patiently teaching her how to be a sweet dog with manners. She LOVES dogs and would love to be in a home where she would have some fur siblings. She is good with cats and does not pay attention to them.

She is crate trained but likes cuddling in bed to sleep. Her former home kept her inside and trained her on puppy pads, but she is working on potty training outside.

Lillie is being fostered in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She is spayed, microchipped, and updated on vaccines/preventatives. If you are interested in meeting her, please submit an application at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Crepe!

Crepe is a super sweet male Double Merle Australian Shepherd puppy. He is 6 months old and weighs 40 pounds.

He enjoys romping with his littermate but is respectful of his older, laid back foster brother and sisters, too. He does well with other dogs but will need a slow introduction when meeting new dog friends.

He loves attention and belly rubs and is quite happy upside down sleeping with his tongue sticking out. With a couple of toys to keep him busy, he would be happy hanging out on the couch or in the yard with his family but would also enjoy taking walks and going on outings.

He is hearing and vision impaired, but gets around really well. He is not been around any cats and loves attention from all ages of people.

Crepe is available for adoption with Speak for the Unspoken and is located in Columbus, ?Ohio. He will be up to date on all vaccines, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, neutered and a microchip prior to adoption.

If you would like to meet Crepe please fill out an adoption application at

Meet Cinnamon Roll!

Cinnamon Roll is a loveable female Double Merle Australian Shepherd. Cinnamon Roll is 6 months old and weighs 30 pounds. She is deaf and vision impaired. She is potty trained, crate trained, and great with other dogs and kids!

She likes puppy play with her littermate, but also is respectful of her older foster brother and sister dogs, too. She is equal parts lovebug and silly sweet puppy! She loves to sit on your lap and give you sweet little kisses. She ignores her foster’s cat that is in a room with a baby gate at the door and loves everyone she meets.

She has a lot of energy and would love an active family that wants her to tag along with them wherever they go. She would be a good walking or hiking buddy and loves being outside with her people and dog pack! We even think she would be good at agility or other dog sports and is very food motivated. She is super smart and will need a person that can keep her busy!

Cinnamon Roll is available for adoption with Speak for the Unspoken and is currently being fostered In Columbus, Ohio. She is up to date on all vaccines, flea/tick/heartworm prevention, spayed and a microchipped.

If you would like to meet Cinnamom Roll please fill out an adoption application at

Meet Woody and Hayes!

Woody and Hayes came to us earlier this year when their owner could no longer care for them. They are a bonded pair and will need to go to a home together. They are both German Shepherds. Wood is a male weighing 80 pounds, and Hayes is a female weighing 70 pounds. They have no impairments and they are potty and crate trained.

They are true to their nature by fiercely protecting their home and their person, but they love their person just as fiercely. They are incredibly smart and can learn about anything. They are awesome running partners and will run about as far as you will let them. They love to swim, especially Hayes! She loves to jump to catch a stick on her way into whatever body of water she’s around.

Woody and Hayes are being fostered in Marysville, Ohio. They are spayed/neutered, and up to date on vaccines, flea/tick and heartworm prevention. If you are interested in meeting them, please apply at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

**Courtesy Post - Please use contact information below for inquiries!**

Hi, my name is Elsa (after the infamous Disney princess) and although I'm a senior, I still have a lot of energy to give. I am a 10-year-old female Shepherd mix weighing 50 pounds.

I am especially fond of cuddles, and belly scratches. My favorite food is Benifull, and sometimes a bit of cheese, and I love a good spritz of whipped cream. I have cataracts but my eyes are still good. They are getting a little rusty, so I may need help from time to time, but I still have enough vison to paly fetch and keep away.

I am good with kids, dogs, and cats, and I love to birdwatch and go for walks. I currently live with my pet human and my friend Slayer, who is a cat, but that's ok, no one is perfect. Slayer is a good cat, but she is rambunctious and sometimes I don't want to play. My pet human is nice though and has always treated me with love. I am generally silly and happy and love to smile and play when I get the chance. However, naps are always good to...

I do not prefer natural bones, as sometimes I get a little possessive and I HATE BATHS, but I'll tolerate it, if need be, although I will shake off all over you, so you've been warned.

It is not my fault I am being rehomed, my pet human has a new schedule and is not home at all anymore, and that makes me sad, but he has to take care of the house and his two pups (children) so although I am sad I don't see him much anymore, I understand.

I am located in Galloway, Ohio. I am spayed and up to date on all of my vaccines/preventatives.

Please contact for adoption inquiries-

🚨We’re Facing a Crisis—We Need More Foster Homes 🚨

At Speak!, we can only save as many dogs as we have foster homes. Right now, we’re inundated with emails pleading for us to save dogs, but we can’t say yes without more fosters. 💔

Meet Brew—this sweet 16-week-old hound mix just arrived from a Texas shelter, where she was on the euthanasia list because of an injured leg. When she arrived, her scared and uncertain eyes made our team tear up. 😭 😭

But just a few days later, after being welcomed into a warm foster home, Brew’s eyes are full of life and hope again. This is what fostering does. It’s the bridge between fear and safety, between despair and a future filled with love. ❣️

Right now, more dogs like Brew are waiting—but without foster homes, we cannot save them. We’re facing a foster home shortage, and we need your help. 🫵🏼

Special thanks to Take Me Home - Advocates For Transport for transporting Brew to Ohio!

10/26/2024

Hi, I’m Coco! I am a 3.5-year-old female Treeing Walker Coonhound/Lab weighing 72 pounds.

HISTORY/ABOUT ME
Believe it or not, the spouse of my previous owner wanted to shoot me. Thankfully, someone found out about me and was able to get me surrendered. It didn’t take me long to forgive the world and decide to trust my foster parents! All I want to do is to be by your side! If I ever stray from there, it’s because my coonhound nose has me on another trail!

FENCING/PLAY/OTHER DOGS
My foster family doesn’t have a fence, so we are using leads. I’ve learned the length of them so I stop before the lead runs out. I want to chase any small thing I see, so I’m thinking I might be more comfortable in a large fenced yard. I love to play with my tug toy and toss it around with my family! And then I’m happy to rest and chew on my red high heel chew toy!
I’ve met Huskies and German Shepherds at the dog park and had no issues saying hello. I wasn’t really interested in playing with them because I was too busy checking out all of the new smells! But, I saw a small dog at the dog park once from far away and my foster mom got nervous because I look at the cats in my house the same way. I just want to chase them!

PROOF I’M A GOOD PAL:
Because of the cats in my house, I have to spend the night in my crate. I do so well going in and don’t give anyone any trouble. But, I really just want to cuddle with you. Sometimes, my foster mom and I stay together in the guest bedroom and I’m the perfect cuddle puddle. I know because she tells me all of the time. I’m also great in and out of the car! I go right to the back seat and sit behind my foster mom. I love to have the window cracked to smell all of the smells!

MEDICAL INFO:
Since I was not given proper preventatives, I did end up getting Lyme Disease. I don’t have any symptoms, am now on monthly prevention, and just finished up my antibiotics. I’ll need to go to the vet in six months for a quick blood check to make I’m still getting better, but it hasn’t affected my life at all!
I do also have a bit of separation anxiety, I’m just the happiest when I’m around my family. I started on medication that I take once a day. I also take an extra pill when I got to the vet and allow my foster mom to easily put a muzzle on me. I don’t give her a bit of trouble! Based on my history, I seem to also have a dislike for men with beards… especially darker ones.

I JUST WANT TO BE LOVED:
I am being fostered in Raymond, Ohio. If my foster family didn’t have so many indoor cats, they said they would love for me to stay here. But, we both know I’ll be so much happier getting to have space to stretch my legs in the house and spend all day and night with you, if you’ll let me. I’m ready to be your best friend! I am spayed and updated on vaccines/preventatives. Please apply to meet me! www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet the sweetest chonk to ever steal your heart: Chesea!

This lovely lady was on the list for euthanasia at Detroit Animal Care & Control because of limited room and her too-timid nature while at the shelter. Speak! For the Unspoken was able to save her in the nick of time – and she has blossomed more every day in foster.

Chesea is a female mixed breed we are guessing to be about 9 years old. She weighs 53 pounds but could probably lose a few! She has no impairments, she is potty trained, and good with other dogs and kids.

Chesea has some recovering left to do. She came to us full of mats and with severely overgrown nails, but with a complete shave and some good nail clipping she’s feeling so much better. Her left ear met with an unfortunate accident at some point in her previous life and only half of it remains. She has arthritis in her spine and will need supplements and/or medication to help manage this (and losing a little weight will also help). Chesea is heartworm positive but has started treatment.

Even with all of this, Chesea has such an open heart and trusting soul. Chesea was terrified in the shelter but after her first day in foster she has left that timidity behind completely. She is a joy on walks and loves going for them – when she knows it’s time she will get tiny zoomies and bark hard enough to lift her front paws off the ground. She is being fostered with two young kids and another dog and has integrated seamlessly into the family.

Chesea is a dog who knows the meaning of personal space! Her favorite spot is about two feet away from you. She will happily sit right by you if you are willing to scratch her ears and under her neck and will gently paw you if stop before she’s had enough. She has no problems being left in the house alone and sleeps loose in the house at night on the main floor as she currently refuses to go up or down stairs inside.

Chesea would love a family looking to spoil a dog in her older years. She is being fostered in Portage, Michigan. If you think Chesea could be the missing part of your life, apply to meet her today! www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Charlie!

Charlie is a 4-year-old male miniature Dachshund weighing 14 pounds. He was dumped at a gas station by a man who did not provide any background on Charlie’s life prior to Speak!

He initially had urinating issues from bladder stones, but since Charlie’s surgery he’s feeling better but still frequently has to go potty and may need to be let out during the night or have puppy pads available. He is on a special food so the bladder stones stay at bay and will be on this for life so his new parents should be aware of the food and cost. He has learned to settle in his crate and will calm down after a short time, but his preference would be to snuggle up in a human bed with only his person or people.

Charlie loves his things very much so he can be possessive over food, toys, and attention. He is food aggressive and needs to be fed separate from all kids or dogs. Because of this, he would do best in a home with no other dogs or young children. If he were to go to a family with other dogs, a meet and greet will be required. If you’re in the kitchen preparing food, Charlie should be kept busy in another room with a kong, toy or settled nicely in his crate.

Charlie is a smart doxie who loves to listen to his humans! He knows his name and comes immediately when you call him. He will go lay in his bed when you direct him and settles nicely. If he starts barking too much, as doxies can do, he will quiet down with a “ Charlie- SHHHH”.

He LOVES squeaky toys, any kind of adventure, car rides, playing fetch and going for walks. He’s even taken a dip in his foster family’s pool and seems to enjoy swimming.

He loves to snuggle and enjoys your personal space, like a true doxie, but he wants his snuggle time and space ALL to himself with his human. He likes alllll the attention!!

Charlie is being fostered in Brimfield, Ohio. He is neutered, microchipped, and updated on all his vaccines/preventatives. If you are interested in meeting him, please apply at www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Meet Kai!

Kai is a male 11-week-old Shih-Tzu puppy weighing just 3 pounds! He is a sweet puppy that came out of a puppy mill because he has a heart murmur. The vet believes he will live a normal happy life with a healthy lifestyle!

Kai has a typical puppy attitude learning to bark to get what he wants! He likes to play with toys and hang out with his Foster dog family. He likes to do zoomies in the backyard when it’s playtime. He gets naps throughout the day in his crate so he doesn’t overdo it with playtime! His foster family keeps him on a routine so he learns good habits for training! Kai eats and drinks well and his favorite toy is lamp chop!

Kai is being fostered in Columbus, Ohio. If interested in knowing more about Kai, please fill out a application with Speak! for the Unspoken. Kai is too young to be neutered but will be in the contract that he will be getting neutered at 6 months of age! www.speakfortheunspoken.com/adopt 🐾

Speak’s Mission

SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue headquartered in the Columbus, Ohio area, but with fosters all over the midwest. We are a foster based rescue, devoted to both animal rescue and education. We focus our rescue efforts on special needs animals, most often those with hearing and vision impairments. Many of the animals we save are double merle Australian Shepherds or other merle breeds born with vision and/or hearing deficits due to inappropriate merle to merle breeding practices. We also work with a puppy mill rescue group to save those animals discarded from the mills as "no longer useful". Many of these cast offs are also special needs. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.
