Speak for the Unspoken We save special needs dogs and give them their best lives. SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue located in the Columbus, Ohio area.

We're a 501(c)(3) foster based pet rescue located in the central Ohio area, but with fosters over a 5 state area including Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Pennsylvania. We are a foster based rescue, devoted to both animal rescue and education. We focus our rescue efforts on special needs animals, most often those with hearing and vision impairments. Most of the animals we save are double mer

le Australian Shepherds born with vision and/or hearing deficits due to inappropriate merle to merle breeding practices. We believe special needs dogs are capable of living happy and healthy lives, and we work to educate the public about these amazing animals. Our Mission statement is “Special needs, good deeds. We see possibilities, not disabilities.” Our mission reflects the fact that we also will assist any animal in need whether it be an exceptionally difficult medical case---like cataract surgery to return vision to an otherwise normal Aussie, or a litter of puppies at risk of parvo in a shelter environment. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.

Meet Gumbo!

Gumbo had a rough start to life when he was attacked by his mother, leaving him blind and missing an eye. He came to us all the way from Louisiana and now is starting his new life up north In Hudsonville, Michigan. He is a super sweet boy that is up-to-date on all his vaccines and microchip. He will, however, need to be neutered a little later in life since he’s an extra large breed.

We have had Gumbo since he was about 11 weeks old and has gone from 11 pounds to almost 30. He is a fast growing boy that loves to eat. He loves to play with other dogs and cats if he can find them. He also is really good at sleeping. If you are looking for a boy that loves to play, but also loves to be a snuggly couch potato he’s your man.

He does well with potty training for the most part. You just have to get him outside. Part of the issue with potty training is the blindness. He does very well maneuvering around the house and adapting to his surroundings. He’s very good at going up the stairs, but does have issues getting down the stairs and a ramp is most likely required.

He does well with children that are respectful of him since he can’t see and does love to run and play with them. Younger children might need to be watched!

He sleeps well in a crate with other dogs all night or would love to snuggle in bed with you. He is a great napper and will snuggle up with you for long naps.

With his blindness, he does tend to like to be around people quite a bit. He is really good at following your voice and we haven’t had to leash him much because he follows right behind you. When you are standing there, he loves to lean on you or stand in between your legs or with his head pressed against your leg to know you were there . His sense of sound and smell are very good and he can smell food from a mile away. He also can hear the smallest sound, and if it does startle him, he will bark.

A huge thank to our friends at project freedom ride for transporting Momma Raina and her 8 pups to us last week all the way from Athens, Georgia!

Project Freedom Ride’s mission is to connect unwanted and abandoned dogs in Texas & Georgia with families and rescues throughout the US and parts of Canada. Raina and family took their freedom ride and 20 other lucky ones. We are grateful that they brought Raina and her adorable pups to us!

At just 7 months old, Yang is ready to find his forever home, and he's sure to steal your heart with his adorable antics. Born in Michigan and rescued from unsafe conditions, Yang is now living his best life in a foster home in Grove City, Ohio. Hi, I’m Mercedes! 🐾

I’m a 2-3 year old female mixed breed who weighs 36 pounds – the perfect size for cuddles and adventures! I’m potty trained, crate trained, and get along well with other animals. 🐶🐱

It may take me a little time to warm up to you, but once I do, we’ll be the best of friends! 🥰 I love following my foster mom around and sitting right next to her – as close as possible! When she needs some space, I’m happy to go to my bed. I’m protective of my home and will bark at people and dogs walking by 🐕🚶‍♀️, but I’m very friendly when I meet them on walks or at the park. I love meeting new friends!

I do best with larger dogs since I like to play a little rough! 🐾🎾 I enjoy toys, bones, yummy snacks, and of course, walks and adventures. But I’m just as happy to relax and Netflix & chill with you! I would probably do best in a home with older kids. 🏠

Before coming to Speak!, I was a stray and had to have surgery on my hip after being hit by a car. 💔 But now that I’ve healed, I’m much happier and ready for my next chapter! I would really benefit from regular walks to build strength in my back leg and some patience to help me work on my confidence. I promise, I’m worth it!

Meet Yin, the adorable tuxedo kitten with a heart as big as his playful paws! 🖤🤍

This sweet boy is approximately 7 months old, weighs in at a tiny 5 pounds, and is ready to find his forever home. 🏡 Yin was born in May in Michigan, but his journey took a turn for the better when a kind-hearted rescuer found him and his family living in unsafe conditions. Now, thanks to Speak, Yin is living his best life in a cozy foster home in Grove City, Ohio.

Yin loves to run and play with his foster siblings—he’s got a ton of energy and always enjoys a good romp around the house! Whether he’s chasing his cat brothers and sisters, or hanging out with his silly Australian Shepherd foster sister, Yin is always in the mix. 🐾 When he’s not zooming around, Yin is happily perched by the window, watching the birds outside, or watching cat videos on his foster mom’s phone with his brother, Yang. 😻📱

Though he can be a little shy at first, Yin’s incredibly sweet nature shines through once he feels comfortable. 💕 He’s also quite the foodie—Yin and his brother love to “sing” together when it’s time for wet food, and they’re big fans of licky treats, too! 🎶🍽️

I am a 4-year-old female Catahoula Leopard mix weighing 85 pounds. I have no impairments and I am crate and potty trained.

Because I have a high energy level, a backyard with a tall fence is very important to me. I spent the first years of my life being an only dog with 3 young human siblings. Because of my solo dog lifestyle, I am not great at sharing my dog toys, but I sure love to steal them from my foster siblings and run away so they can chase me.

My foster mom says I struggle with something called anxiety and I am given daily medication to help reduce my anxiousness around new people and situations. I am looking for a home that will help me continue my confidence-building journey. I know I am super smart, at least that is what everyone tells me, and would excel at all types of training and activities. I am so smart I even know when it’s time for me to go outside, or if it’s getting close to breakfast and dinner time. I will even bring my food bowl to you, so you won’t forget. It’s like having a furry alarm clock to keep you on track.

Meet Golden Graham!

Golden Graham (or just Graham as his foster family calls him) is a handsome 2.5 year old Yellow Labrador Retriever mix breed weighing 60 pounds.

Graham came from a high kill shelter in a southern state. His foster mom was walking around the shelter and between all the barking dogs was Graham, sitting quietly leaned up against the cage door hoping to be noticed. Graham was seized from a bad situation but you would never know it because he is just the best boy. Despite being at a shelter where he wasn’t able to get out of his cage for days on end, he is such a well behaved dog.

Graham is completely potty trained and crate trained. He would also very likely be fine left out of the crate in the home as he has not been found to be destructive at all. In the home, he is low energy and just wants to be next to the humans. Outside, he loves walks, sniffing around the yard, chasing toys, and doing zoomies. Graham is trained to stay off furniture unless he is invited up. He does love to cuddle on the couch and in bed at night if he is invited. He is a great boy and will lay at the end of the bed all night and sleep there if allowed.

Graham has done very well with dogs in his foster home. He does play rough (bouncing on them, jumping in the air, etc) with young large dogs. However, he is very gentle in his play with small breed dogs. He is not very interested in the cats in his foster home. Graham is also great with children and does not demonstrate any resource guarding issues in his foster home. He has done great with the visiting children and loves to snuggle up with them. Of course, children should always be gentle and respectful of all dogs.

This boy is absolute perfection and will make someone the best companion. His foster parents would love to keep him but state they have enough animals in the home. He truly is an absolute joy to have around. Could his forever home be with you?

Hi, I’m Marie!

I’m a sweet little female boxer mix that makes friends with everyone I meet and I’m looking for the perfect family for me! I am 1-year-old and weigh 35 pounds.

I am currently in a foster home with kids, cats, and dogs, and I love them all! I am respectful of space and do well with other dogs of all energies. I leave cats alone for the most part but sometimes I try to play with them! They don’t always like that so they tell me to stop and I listen pretty well!

I don’t tend to bark a lot but sometimes I get a little noisy when I’m playing. I am learning basic commands, but because I’m deaf, it takes me a little longer. I do learn a lot from watching my foster siblings and would do best in a home with another dog! As for humans, I like everyone, but I really love kids. We like to snuggle on the couch and watch movies together and even play with toys!

Meet Toast Malone and Maple Syrup, two adorable siblings who are sure to steal your heart! 🐾

These sweet and playful kittens were born in September 2024, and they are a dynamic duo that must be adopted together—after all, they’ve been inseparable from day one! Toast and Maple were rescued from Calhoun County Animal Services, and they have brought endless joy and energy into their foster home since.

These two lovebugs are incredibly affectionate. They snuggle constantly and were so upset when they were briefly separated for their spay/neuter appointments—proof of just how close they really are. 🐱❤️

Both Toast and Maple have an abundance of kitten energy, and they love to explore their surroundings, chase toys, and keep you entertained with their playful antics. While they might seem a little shy at first, don’t be fooled—once they warm up to you, it’s a whirlwind of fun and affection! Their loud purrs are a constant source of joy (they’re so loud, you might even hear them purring through the night 😺).

These two are also super friendly with other adult cats in their foster home, proving that they have great social skills and would likely thrive in a multi-cat household. 🐈 They are well-behaved with kids, though their kitten energy and claws might be a bit much for very young children. They have not been introduced to dogs yet.

One of the unique things about Toast and Maple is their love for soft, fluffy blankets—particularly Sherpa-type blankets! They love to nurse and snuggle on these cozy fabrics, likely due to their early separation from their mom. So if you’re ready to spoil these two with the fluffiest bedding and plenty of love, they’ll be thrilled!

Toast has also been working on some special tricks—he’s in training to play fetch with his rattle mice, and he’s already a pro at bringing them back most of the time! 🎾

Meet Zena! 🐾💖

This sweet, shy 5-year-old mix breed is ready to steal your heart! She’s about 40 lbs of love and has a little quirk – she’s blind in her right eye 👁️, but that doesn’t slow her down one bit! Zena is potty trained, crate trained, and gets along with other dogs (though we’re not sure how she feels about cats 🐱). She’s also super gentle with kids – her foster family has a 3-year-old, and Zena is a big fan of the tiny human snuggles! 😍 Zena doesn’t require a fenced yard and she’s totally fine being an only dog, but she would *love* to have some doggy siblings to hang out with! She’s currently living in Hilliard, Ohio, and has a medium energy level. She loves her walks (even in the snow ❄️) but is just as happy curling up in a cozy spot for a nap. 💤

Zena’s story is one of resilience. She spent most of her life as a stray in Texas, where she was found with her four puppies. After two months in a shelter, her pups were adopted, and Zena hopped into a cross-country adventure to her new home in Ohio! 🛣️ Since settling in, Zena has been blossoming into her goofy, loving self. She was a little reserved at first, but with patience and lots of love, she’s showing more of her playful side! She loves chew toys, tasty treats, and her peanut butter calming mat 🧸🥜. Zena is also getting more comfortable exploring her foster home and enjoys quiet moments cuddling with her family.

Meet Ringo!

Ringo is a 4-5 moth old male Chocolate Lab Pittie mix. He currently weighs 27 pounds and has no impairments. He is working on potty training and create training, and doing very well!

Ringo has not had the best beginnings in his short life, but is ready to make up for it by being the star of your show. This little boy is an absolute sweetheart. He's new to being inside a home but is adapting so quickly. He loves to follow you around and is totally content chewing on a bone. The first time he found the dog toy bin, he dove in head first! 😂

At first he can be a little shy but once he realizes you only want to give him love, he settles right in and is happy to reciprocate.

He gets along well with other dogs and would love a doggie brother or sister to show him the ropes, but it's not necessary. We are pretty sure even just walking on a leash is a new concept to him, but he's smart and is picking it up so quickly.

He's learning a lot of new things and is experiencing a whole new world so he just asks that his new family is understanding and willing to help him get comfortable. If you can offer him that, he will be the best companion you will ever have ❤️

Meet Coco!

She is a mixed breed breed pup that is looking for her forever home.

Like many black dogs, Coco is facing an unfair challenge when it comes to finding her forever home. Studies show that black dogs are often overlooked with as much as 30% fewer black dogs getting adopted compared to dogs of other colors. This phenomenon is sadly known as “Black Dog Syndrome,” where potential adopters are less likely to choose a dog based on their fur color alone. But Coco’s worth isn’t measured by her coat—she’s a gem just waiting to shine!

Meet Woody and Hayes!

Woody and Hayes came to us earlier this year when their owner could no longer care for them. They are a bonded pair and will need to go to a home together. They are both German Shepherds. Wood is a male weighing 80 pounds, and Hayes is a female weighing 70 pounds. They have no impairments and they are potty and crate trained.

They are true to their nature by fiercely protecting their home and their person, but they love their person just as fiercely. They are incredibly smart and can learn about anything. They are awesome running partners and will run about as far as you will let them. They love to swim, especially Hayes! She loves to jump to catch a stick on her way into whatever body of water she’s around.

Hi! My name is Moo!

I am a female kitten weighting about 4 pounds. I came a from a hoarder with my 17 week old best buddy Milk. Milk and I are best friends and we would love to go to the same forever home, but would likely adjust ok if we have to be separated.

I am a very curious and playful kitty. I warmed up to my foster Dad pretty quick but I am taking a little longer with the rest of my foster humans. I tolerate my 8 year old foster human. I growl at the dogs in the house, but that may change as I have more contact with them. My foster family says I’ve come a long way in just a few short weeks. I am a great cat for someone who has a little patience as I learn to be a pet kitty.

I am a 22-week-old female Australian Shepherd weighing 22 pounds. I’m a spirited girl full of curiosity and love for fun. Despite being unable to hear, I have no trouble at all getting along.

I adore playing with my fur sibling and engaging in intense games of tug-of-war with our trusty rope toy. My foster mom takes me on delightful walks, where I excel at walking on a leash. I am diligently learning hand commands and making progress with potty training.

Cats don’t bother me at all, and I simply adore children. Crates are my cozy retreat, where I happily take afternoon naps.

Meet Sissy, the one-and-only Chihuahua with a personality that’s as unforgettable as her looks! 😍🐾

This little lady is rocking an all-white coat, stunning blue eyes, and legs that go on for days! She’s got a tiny head and almost no neck, making her *a total sight to behold*—seriously, she’s a walking masterpiece! 🎨👀 But it’s not just her looks that stand out. Sissy is a quirky, cat-like character who loves to hang out on the couch... until she suddenly zooms across the room for no reason! 🏃‍♀️💨 And let’s not forget her "kibble dance"—she’ll roll around some pieces like they might escape, then pounce like a pro! 🐕💃 You’ll be laughing at her antics in no time! 😄

Sissy has had a bit of a rough past, but now she’s on the lookout for her forever family. She’s estimated to be around 7-10 years young, and although she’s deaf, she’s got *plenty* of love to give. ❤️ She does startle easily, so she’d thrive in a calm, predictable home where she feels safe. She’s not a fan of dim lighting (and might be a bit scared of the dark 🌙), so she’ll appreciate a yard light on for her evening strolls.

Sissy is a little selective with her dog pals, so she’ll do best as the only pet in a household with no or older kids. She’s happiest when chilling by your side or going for her daily walkies 🚶‍♀️ or hanging out in a cozy, fenced backyard. But don’t be fooled—this little ball of fun knows how to enjoy her quiet time too, just being her adorable self! 😌✨

Speak’s Mission

SPEAK! for the Unspoken is a registered 501(c)(3) pet rescue headquartered in the Columbus, Ohio area, but with fosters all over the midwest. We are a foster based rescue, devoted to both animal rescue and education. We focus our rescue efforts on special needs animals, most often those with hearing and vision impairments. Many of the animals we save are double merle Australian Shepherds or other merle breeds born with vision and/or hearing deficits due to inappropriate merle to merle breeding practices. We believe special needs dogs are capable of living happy and healthy lives, and we work to educate the public about these amazing animals. Our Mission statement is “Special needs, good deeds. We see possibilities, not disabilities.” Our mission reflects the fact that we also will assist any animal in need whether it be an exceptionally difficult medical case---like cataract surgery to return vision to an otherwise normal Aussie, or a litter of puppies at risk of parvo in a shelter environment. We also work with a puppy mill rescue group to save those animals discarded from the mills as "no longer useful". Many of these cast offs are also special needs. These special dogs are truly amazing creatures that overcome their disabilities with courage and grace. Until the careless breeding stops, we will continue to find these special dogs the homes they deserve.
