May is national service animal eye exam month, and our very own ophthalmology team had the pleasure of meeting three amazing service dogs last week. Dr. Voyles and Nicole are pictured with Boodah, a sweet Lhasa Apso that is part of Intermountain Therapy Animals and participates in the Children's READ program. Boodah's eyes got a clean bill of health today, so he can continue to "read" to his precious children that love him so much. We also had the privilege of examining Angel and Meira. These Belgian Collie sisters are an integral part of the National Network of Canine Detection Services and are active search and rescue dogs. Auburn Veterinary Specialists Gulf Shores thanks Epicur Pharma for sponsoring this amazing event, and we look forward to meeting many more wonderful service animals this month and ensuring their eyes are healthy. Stay tuned for more throughout May!

We look forward to her rechecks and continued improvements.

Meet Shadow. He is a 16 year old cat that presented to our Ophthalmology service at the beginning of January for acute blindness. Shadow was diagnosed with hypertension (high blood pressure) which resulted in retinal detachments in both eyes. Dr. Voyles and the ophthalmology team prescribed blood pressure lowering medication and submitted bloodwork to help determine the cause of high blood pressure.
High blood pressure is commonly diagnosed in older cats due to multiple systemic diseases. Kidney disease and hyperthyroidism are two of the most common diseases associated with hypertension, therefore it is recommended that all older cats (over the age of 12) have routine bloodwork and blood pressure measurements to ensure no additional treatment is recommended. Prompt referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist is important for any case of sudden blindness to help determine the cause and best course of treatment.
At Shadow's recheck appointment last week, his blood pressure is well controlled, his retinas have reattached, and he has regained functional vision!! Shadow is feeling much better and is able to resume his normal activity at home. We are so happy Shadow is doing well and enjoyed taking care of this handsome boy.
Veterinary Technicians and Assistants get excited! It's that time of year again. Our annual CE will be held at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo for our largest event yet! Six hours of CE- Registration opens in February. Tell your friends!!!
ATTENTION to our wonderful clients and referring veterinarians:
Dr. Voyles and the ophthalmology team repaired a corneal laceration in a sweet puppy that had an encounter with a cat. She just wanted to play, but the cat was not in agreement with that. Cat claw injuries can be devastating to eyes, but fortunately with quick referral and appropriate medical therapy, this girl was a candidate for surgical repair. The suture used to repair the area is smaller than the size of a strand of hair, therefore an operating microscope is used during surgery. Her surgery went very well, and the laceration was repaired without complication. She will continue medical therapy and use of the Elizabethan collar (cone of shame) while her surgical incisions heal. We hope she feels better very soon and enjoyed taking care of her.
Yesterday we got to see our sweet buddy Redd! Redd was referred due to the swelling between his eyes (pictured below). We determined that he had a fungal infection in his sinus cavity. Surgery and Internal Medicine services worked together to cure this handsome patient. We are privileged to be able to help patients and owners like these.

Dr. Meredith Voyles earned both her undergraduate and DVM degrees at Auburn University. Following graduation, she spent six years in private small animal general practice in Fairhope, Alabama, where she developed an interest in ophthalmology. She later returned to Auburn as the faculty community outpatient clinician and completed an ophthalmology residency, followed by board certification from the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. She then relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where she spent 10 years in a private practice ophthalmology hospital. She has returned to Alabama to join the faculty of Auburnβs Gulf Shores Specialty Hospital, where she will teach veterinary students while providing medical and surgical ophthalmology specialty care to gulf coast area veterinarians and referrals.

Introducing the stunning Saban. π Saban is a 4.5 year old Mastiff that presented to our internal medicine service for vomiting and loose stools. Through careful diagnostics we were able to determine that this gorgeous boy was suffering from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency or EPI. Essentially, his pancreas does not produce the enzymes required to fully digest his food and must be supplemented. His family has done a wonderful job managing his condition and we are happy to report Saban is feeling much better. To learn more about EPI click the link below.

Dear clients and referring clinics, we will be closed tomorrow, November 21st due to an outbreak of the flu at our hospital. We will also be closed the 23rd-25th for the Thanksgiving holiday. We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to serving you all again soon.
We have spent this week celebrating National Vet Tech Week with all of our staff that makes caring for your pet possible. What is a Vet Tech? To put it simply, they are nurses for pets. Our techs have graduated from a credentialed 2 or 4 year program and passed the national board exam. Some of their many responsibilities include: monitoring anesthesia and assisting during procedures, running lab work, performing drug calculations and filling medications, performing radiographs, keeping equipment in working order and caring for hospitalized patients. These hard working professionals are dedicated to providing the best possible medical care to your beloved pets.
Today we honor those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country and our freedoms. Dr. Thomas was invited to the Alabama War Dog Memorial at the Alabama Battleship Memorial Park to help recogonize some of our nation's fallen heros. He was honored that one of the names he was asked to read was LTC Daniel Holland, a fellow Veterinary Corps Officer who was killed in Iraq. He was a friend and mentor during their service together.
Merry little Mazie was originally referred to Internal Medicine for a suspected liver shunt. Dr. McGraw quickly diagnosed her with a diaphragmatic hernia and she was transferred to our surgeon, Dr. Thomas, for repair. A diaphragmatic hernia is the disruption of the diaphragm which allows abdominal organs to migrate into the chest cavity. Dr. Thomas had to carefully move part of her small intestine, spleen, pancreas and half her stomach back into her abdomen before closing the hernia. Look in the comments to see before and after radiographs of this two pound marvel!
