There’s no better place to be on a cold winter’s day than in a nice warm bed. At least that’s how Boodah, our American Black Bear, sees it. Boodah has spent the last several weeks collecting leaf litter, pine straw, hay, and even Christmas trees that keepers leave in his exhibit for him to create the perfect bed and is now ready to enter his natural hibernation state known as torpor. Black Bears in torpor can spend anywhere from a week to 6 months, depending on region and food availability, sleeping through the cold in a nice warm den. How long do you think Boodah will stay in bed this year?

Waylon was a very good boy this year! He is doing very well with his training. He is learning to be very good on walks through public areas, he no longer torments the encounter lemurs AND he's been learning how to sing! Since he's been so good, Santa (aka his wonderful sponsors, Phillip and Dru Wheat) got him a brand new, big-boy harness! Waylon is now over 14 lbs and getting bigger every day, so he needed a harness to grow with him as he became a wonderful ambassador for the zoo!

Waylon is proudly sponsored by Phillip and Dru Wheat.

Happy Wednesday with Waylon! Our not-so-little man is now 13 lbs and is getting regular time in his big boy yard all by himself. Now that he gets to play outside more often, we have started giving him regular enrichment, which he is very excited about.
He got a lime recently and was perplexed that his "ball" tasted funny. He ended up getting the zoomies and sprinting around his yard. Zoomies are considered "an excited expression of happiness." Seeing him exhibit such enjoyment and confidence while in his yard makes us happy.

Waylon is proudly sponsored by Phillip and Dru Wheat.
