On Monday afternoon, I was proud to assist a fellow veteran, an active duty U.S. Navy Seabee, and his family train their newest addition. Let's meet Rocco, a 5-month-old Chihuahua Bulldog mix who was extremely cute but was causing some grief for the family regarding his obedience. Rocco did not know how to walk property on the leash, sit or stay a distance, jumped on their young son pictured below, and acted up inside the home. Now Rocco is walking nicely with everybody, sitting and staying at distance with distractions. He isn't jumping on anyone, being calm in the home, and the young son has a sidekick he can cruise around the neighborhood with without concern. Of course he'll be monitored by his mom and dad.

On Saturday morning, I was thrilled to assist a college student studying elementary education who had driven over from Mobile, Alabama, with her parents, to have me train her newest sidekick, a 4.5-month-old Labrador mix named Maylee. Maylee was a typical pup who had trouble walking nicely on the leash without pulling, wouldn't stay in place or at distance, jumped on friends, and was acting up inside the house. Now, the family has the tools and knowledge to control this energetic girl. Maylee is walking smartly on the leash without pulling, staying in place and at a distance, no longer jumping on anyone unless it's permitted, and being calm inside the home.

On Friday afternoon, I was thrilled to assist another wonderful family in training their newest member. Let us meet Klaus, a 4 mos old Belgian Malinois. Klaus was your normal puppy. He was anxious as initially when training began; he struggled to move on the leash, refused to sit or stay at a distance, and his return to the owners was doubtful. Now, only positive reinforcement being used, including verbal and physical praise. Klaus walks properly with his mother and family, sits and stays at a distance, and responds immediately when called. The family now has the knowledge and resources to manage this great dog.

On Saturday afternoon, I was excited to help a terrific couple of 38 years who had worked and retired from the casino industry train their 14-month-old miniature poodle named Pappi. Pappi was pulling on the leash when walking and wouldn't sit and stay at a distance. If the front door was open, he would take off and not return, causing serious concern in the neighborhood with traffic. He also would nip on their hands if he didn't get his way and jump on guests when it wasn't appropriate. Now my happy couple has knowledge and tools to control this great-looking dog. Pappi is walking properly on the leash as shown in the photos below without pulling; he's sitting and staying at a distance and returning when called, and he's no longer jumping on anyone unless it's permitted, and his nipping on the hands has been addressed and curtailed. #lovemyjob
On Monday afternoon, I was excited to assist a high school senior class of 2025 on training her 7 mos old Pitbull named Molly. Molly was an extremely energetic pup who thought she was part cat the way she jumped on family and the furniture; she was difficult to walk properly on the leash without pulling and had no idea how to sit and stay in place or at distance. Now my future graduate with an academic scholarship to Belhaven College has the knowledge and tools to control this great-looking dog. Molly is walking calmly down the road without pulling on the leash with distractions. She's sitting and staying at a distance, no longer jumping on anyone or the furniture without permission being granted. All training was completed without the use of food or treats.

On Sunday morning I was proud to help a fellow veteran U.S. Navy submarine service who served from 1971 to 1979. He has a two-year-old German Shepherd Husky mix named Buddy which he rescued from a his neighborhood where Buddy was constantly left outside without any food or water, and when Buddy's owner moved away, he abandoned the dog. (Absolutely tragic) Now Buddy's in a loving home, with a couple small issues to deal with. Buddy tends to pull on the leash while walking; he's not known for staying at a distance, especially out front of the house, and barks crazily when the doorbell rings or when he sees another dog. Now my owners have the knowledge and tools to control handsome fella. Buddy is walking nicely on the leash without pulling and will stay in place as shown in the photos below. His barking has been addressed and curtailed when the doorbell rings or if he sees another dog.#vetshelpingvets
This Sunday afternoon I was happy to drive 90 miles over to Fairhope, Alabama, to help a stand-up guy who works in real state on training his great-looking 2-year-old German Shepherd collie mix, Nesta, was an excellent dog; however, she did have a few small hiccups and to her obedience. She was known to bark when it wasn't warranted; she still pulled on the leash while walking, did not know how to sit or stay at a distance, and returning wasn't always 100% back to her owner. Now my owner has the knowledge and tools to maintain and control this excellent dog. Nesta is walking calmly on the leash without pulling, as shown in the photos below. She stays at long distances and returns quickly when called, only barking when it's warranted. When the lesson was over, we were rewarded by going to the American Legion to listen to a live band play Journey, which was outstanding with numerous people enjoying the festivities, including small children, and Nesta was a perfect lady. #lovemyjob
On Monday afternoon, I was thrilled to assist another terrific couple on training their newest addition, a two-year-old Golden Retriever named Nala, which they drove 14 hours up to Illinois to bring her back to the coast for a better quality of life. Nala had a few basic issues that needed to be addressed. She found it slightly difficult to walk on leash without pulling; she really did not know how to sit or stay at a distance, and returning when called was a concern, and she would jump when it wasn't appropriate. Now my happy couple has the knowledge and tools to control this great-looking girl. Nala is walking smoothly on the leash, as shown in the photos below. She's sitting and staying at a distance with distractions; she isn't jumping unless it's approved. #lovemyjob
On Sunday afternoon, I was proud to assist a fellow United States Air Force veteran who served as a fuel specialist in the early 1970s. He has a beautiful nine-month-old Saint Bernard named Sugar. Sugar was a sweet girl who was taking advantage of my owner due to my owner's disabilities. Sugar needed to learn how to walk gently without pulling on the leash, especially because he's in a wheeled electric vehicle, as well as how to stay calm at home and not jump on anyone or anything. My owner was given the knowledge and tools necessary to care for and control this amazing dog. Sugar is walking wonderfully next to his wheeled vehicle, as demonstrated in the photos below. She's no longer jumping on anyone or anything unless permitted and is more relaxed inside the home. #vetshelpingvets
On Sunday morning I was excited to help a retired nautical captain of a 300-ton ship who worked his way up the ranks from Able Body Seaman to Captain. He has a great looking 2 yr old Labrador named Rebel to be his first mate, but was destroying the furniture and plants both inside and outside the home. He pulled on the leash while walking and only stayed for a short period of time; returning back to the owner was hit or miss. Now Rebel's ship shape rules are in place, my owner has the knowledge and tools to maintain this amazing dog. Rebel is walking nicely on the leash without pulling, sitting, or staying at a distance and returns quickly when called his chewing habits inside outside the home we're addressed and have been curtailed. #lovemyjob
On Wednesday, I was excited to assist another wonderful couple who are newlyweds and recently migrated from Destin, Florida, to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. They have a 4 yr old Border Collie named Cash. Cash a brilliant dog in all aspects of training except that he would jump on the grandkids and furniture, which is a huge no-no. He was also starting to curl his lip when the grandkids were pushing his buttons. Cash wasn't as smooth as he could've been when walking on the leash, and when he sat and stayed for distance, it wasn't consistent. Now, without the use of food or treats, my happy couple, especially the mom, who's a pharmacist by trade, has the necessary tools and knowledge to control this amazing boy. Cash is no longer jumping on anyone or anything unless permitted; he's staying at a long distance more consistently. He's walking excellently on the leash without pulling, and he isn't curling up when the grandkids are harassing him without consequence.

On Thursday afternoon, I was delighted to assist another veteran, a United States Army engine technician who served from 1985 to 1999. He owns a 19-week-old Cane Corso named "Prince," who has already doubled in size in the past four weeks. Prince was controlling the household since he didn't know how to walk correctly on a leash without pulling; he wouldn't stay in place or at a distance; and he occasionally jumped on his family when it wasn't suitable. My owner can now control this adorable puppy. Prince walks well on the leash without pulling, can stay at a long distance despite distractions, and returns when called. He also understands that jumping is prohibited unless specifically permitted. Control was maintained solely through verbal and physical praise.
