Last Tuesday afternoon I was happy to help a terrific mom who works in the family business of heating and air conditioning with her 16-year-old son, who drove an hour away from Petal, Mississippi. They currently have a 10-month-old German Shorthaired Pointer named Miller, who was not responding to commands and required professional assistance. Miller was a highly intelligent dog who quickly learned how to walk on a leash without pulling. He also learned how to sit and stay at a distance, as well as how to return when called and be calm inside the home. The family now has the knowledge and tools to maintain this great-looking dog. All training was accomplished without the use of food or treats for motivation. #lovemyjob
On Tuesday afternoon, I was thrilled to assist a couple of newlyweds who are moving their various houses with their individual pets into a single household. Gumbo, a 5-year-old dachshund/blue heeler mix, and Drago, a 5-year-old muscular pit bull, were the dogs I helped train. The primary fear was a potential fight between Gumbo and Drago because Gumbo was being extremely aggressive toward Drago. Both dogs needed their manners worked on; they both pulled on walks, didn't know how to sit or stay a distance, and were easily distracted
by cats and other vehicles driving by. Now my owners have the knowledge and tools to control this dynamic pair; the aggression from Gumbo has been addressed and curtailed. Both dogs are walking smoothly on the leash without pulling, sitting and staying at a distance with distractions, and also being calm inside the home for a more enjoyable evening.

On Monday afternoon I was delighted to assist a couple of Colorado snowbirds visiting for the warmer weather, where Dad is a former Army veteran who served from 1980 to '83 in artillery air defense and his wife of 40 years, a retired school teacher. They have a 5 yr old, German Shepherd named Gunnar whom they rescued 3 years ago when he was abandoned. Gunnar was a brilliant dog regarding training; he just had a few hiccups. He was still pulling on the leash when walking and wouldn't return when called on a consistent basis. Now my happy couple has the knowledge and tools to control this magnificent dog. Gunnar is walking smoothly on the leash without pulling for more enjoyable walks and is returning quickly when called on a consistent basis. All training was completed without the use of food or treats for motivation. #vetshelpingvets
On Friday evening, after 3 days of snowy conditions on the Gulf Coast, I was eager to assist a local high school guidance counselor teach her 6-month-old Dalmatian mix named Modi, who she rescued from a local shelter to be her side kick and companion. Modi was a boisterous puppy for his owner. Modi was a huge jumper on friends, and guests would pull badly on the leash while attempting to walk, making walks exhausting. He did not know how to sit in place or stay at a distance, and his recall was sometimes hit or miss. Now, with only verbal and physical praise, my owner has tools and knowledge to control this handsome boy. Modi is now walking properly on the leash without pulling, staying calmly in place and at a distance, and returning when called, and he's no longer jumping on anyone or anything unless he's permitted.

On Thursday afternoon, I was happy to assist another veteran active-duty U.S. Navy logistics specialist since 2012 in training the family dog they adopted from a local shelter six months ago. Let's meet Dexter, a 1-year-old Rottweiler mix who was misbehaving for Mom by yanking on his leash. He was also difficult to walk the kiddos with a stroller; he did not sit in place or at a distance and was distracted easily around other dogs and would jump when it wasn't permitted. Now, Mom, being the typical Navy bride, took charge of the situation and was the primary handler in the training. Dexter is now walking easily on the leash without pulling, and also with the stroller, he is sitting and staying in place and at a distance with distractions and does not jump unless he has permission. The family has the knowledge and tools to be able to maintain this great-looking dog.

On Monday afternoon, I was proud to assist a fellow veteran, an active duty U.S. Navy Seabee, and his family train their newest addition. Let's meet Rocco, a 5-month-old Chihuahua Bulldog mix who was extremely cute but was causing some grief for the family regarding his obedience. Rocco did not know how to walk property on the leash, sit or stay a distance, jumped on their young son pictured below, and acted up inside the home. Now Rocco is walking nicely with everybody, sitting and staying at distance with distractions. He isn't jumping on anyone, being calm in the home, and the young son has a sidekick he can cruise around the neighborhood with without concern. Of course he'll be monitored by his mom and dad.

On Saturday morning, I was thrilled to assist a college student studying elementary education who had driven over from Mobile, Alabama, with her parents, to have me train her newest sidekick, a 4.5-month-old Labrador mix named Maylee. Maylee was a typical pup who had trouble walking nicely on the leash without pulling, wouldn't stay in place or at distance, jumped on friends, and was acting up inside the house. Now, the family has the tools and knowledge to control this energetic girl. Maylee is walking smartly on the leash without pulling, staying in place and at a distance, no longer jumping on anyone unless it's permitted, and being calm inside the home.

On Saturday afternoon, I was excited to help a terrific couple of 38 years who had worked and retired from the casino industry train their 14-month-old miniature poodle named Pappi. Pappi was pulling on the leash when walking and wouldn't sit and stay at a distance. If the front door was open, he would take off and not return, causing serious concern in the neighborhood with traffic. He also would nip on their hands if he didn't get his way and jump on guests when it wasn't appropriate. Now my happy couple has knowledge and tools to control this great-looking dog. Pappi is walking properly on the leash as shown in the photos below without pulling; he's sitting and staying at a distance and returning when called, and he's no longer jumping on anyone unless it's permitted, and his nipping on the hands has been addressed and curtailed. #lovemyjob
On Monday afternoon, I was excited to assist a high school senior class of 2025 on training her 7 mos old Pitbull named Molly. Molly was an extremely energetic pup who thought she was part cat the way she jumped on family and the furniture; she was difficult to walk properly on the leash without pulling and had no idea how to sit and stay in place or at distance. Now my future graduate with an academic scholarship to Belhaven College has the knowledge and tools to control this great-looking dog. Molly is walking calmly down the road without pulling on the leash with distractions. She's sitting and staying at a distance, no longer jumping on anyone or the furniture without permission being granted. All training was completed without the use of food or treats.

On Sunday morning I was proud to help a fellow veteran U.S. Navy submarine service who served from 1971 to 1979. He has a two-year-old German Shepherd Husky mix named Buddy which he rescued from a his neighborhood where Buddy was constantly left outside without any food or water, and when Buddy's owner moved away, he abandoned the dog. (Absolutely tragic) Now Buddy's in a loving home, with a couple small issues to deal with. Buddy tends to pull on the leash while walking; he's not known for staying at a distance, especially out front of the house, and barks crazily when the doorbell rings or when he sees another dog. Now my owners have the knowledge and tools to control handsome fella. Buddy is walking nicely on the leash without pulling and will stay in place as shown in the photos below. His barking has been addressed and curtailed when the doorbell rings or if he sees another dog.#vetshelpingvets
On Monday afternoon, I was thrilled to assist another terrific couple on training their newest addition, a two-year-old Golden Retriever named Nala, which they drove 14 hours up to Illinois to bring her back to the coast for a better quality of life. Nala had a few basic issues that needed to be addressed. She found it slightly difficult to walk on leash without pulling; she really did not know how to sit or stay at a distance, and returning when called was a concern, and she would jump when it wasn't appropriate. Now my happy couple has the knowledge and tools to control this great-looking girl. Nala is walking smoothly on the leash, as shown in the photos below. She's sitting and staying at a distance with distractions; she isn't jumping unless it's approved. #lovemyjob
