HSSM has some 𝗘𝗫𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚 news!!!❣

We are teaming up with the Biloxi Shuckers and their "𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘚𝘩𝘶𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘳" program to provide sponsorships for our heartworm positive dogs here at the shelter through our "𝘏𝑎𝘷𝑒 𝑎 𝐻𝘦𝑎𝘳𝑡" fund!

They have generously contributed a $5,000 MATCH to HSSM's Have a Heart Fund in hopes of getting these dogs adopted into a loving homes. Donations to this post and to HSSM's Have a Heart Fund will be matched up to $5K during the entire month of February.

HSSM is currently housing 55 heartworm positive dogs in the shelter and to sponsor all of their treatment it would cost approximately $30,000. All donations made to HSSM's Have a Heart fund are literally lifesaving. We urge you to please consider opening up your heart to adopt one of these amazing pets, but if you can't commit to adopting, you can still play a major role in helping them find a forever home by contributing to the treatment to save their heart. You can either click on the donate button of this post to make a donation or via venmo: https://venmo.com/u/humanesocietyofsouthms. Every dollar counts!❤️

‼️ Ellie Needs Your Help—Right Now‼️

Meet Ellie, a stray brought in today by Gulfport Animal Control. With one look at her emaciated body, we knew she was in trouble. After urgent veterinary testing, Ellie was diagnosed with malnutrition, leptospirosis, and hookworms—all wreaking havoc inside her fragile, little body. She’s now under our veteriniarians supervision, fighting for her life.

But that’s not all. Ellie also has a cleft lip, angular leg deformities, and severe skin issues. These are genetic issues caused by poor breeding practices. She’s suffering, but with your support, she has a chance to heal.

Ellie, and so many others like her, rely on the kindness of people like you. Please consider donating to our Chicken Soup Fund, which provides life-saving care for shelter animals in desperate need.

Ellie is fighting—will you fight for her?

Brace yourselves for maximum cuteness: an adorable litter of Papillon-mix puppies has officially hit the adoption floor! ✨ These babies were born just days after their rockstar mama strutted into the shelter as a stray.

They’ve spent their early days living their best puppy lives in a foster home, and now they’re back at HSSM, ready to steal your hearts and maybe your socks, too. 💖 Hurry down to the shelter to meet them before they’re scooped up faster than the last donut in the breakroom!

And can we give a huge round of applause to their incredible foster parents? 🙌 Thanks to them, these pups are healthy, happy, and totally adoptable. If you’ve ever thought about fostering (or just want to be someone’s hero), email [email protected] and let’s chat—it might just be the best decision you make this year.

🐾 Don’t wait—these cuties are paw-sitively irresistible! 🐾

💖 Life is precious, and so is our girl! 💕

Meet Precious, a true gem among pups! When you walk through the rooms of the shelter, you may not notice her at first. She is 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑚 and 𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑒𝑡 in her kennel. She doesn't jump around and bark like crazy to get your attention - which is a good thing! - but it might also be the reason you pass her by without really seeing her. When you meet her outside of her kennel, Precious will be quick to show you that she is a 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑑𝑦 whether she is sitting for a treat or taking one. She will reach up and give you a gentle hug. If you get down on her level she will curl right up in your lap as if she is a dog half her size. Precious is now one of our 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐒 . She came in as a stray in October 2024 and no one came to claim her. She is fixed, heartworm negative, and ready to find her place in your heart. Precious is an overall good girl and since she isn't telling you about it we will! If you are looking for a dog that will love you above all else and stay by your side this is your girl! As soon as you spend a little time with her you'll see what we see every day. We all know Precious things come to those who wait, but let's not make her wait any longer!

TODAY (2/1) marks the start of HSSM’s “Have a Heart” month!!❣️ Each February, HSSM dedicates the entire month to raising funds and awareness for all the heartworm positive dogs in our care. About 18% of dogs that enter the shelter are heartworm positive. HSSM currently has 55 heartworm positive dogs in our care with additional strays entering the building each day. It would cost approximately $30,000 to treat all the heartworm positive dogs in the shelter on any given day.

Mississippi has the highest number of heartworm cases in the U.S. and heartworm positive dogs live at the shelter around 4 months longer, as compared to a heartworm negative dog. That is why we make it our mission to bring awareness to this disease and advocate for those in need of treatment.

All month long, we will be highlighting heartworm positive dogs in our care and raising funds to sponsor their treatment. We have several different fundraisers going on in the community and will be sharing all the different ways you can get involved to make a PAWsitive impact.

You can start showing your support by making plans to have dinner at the Half Shell Oyster House in Gulfport and The Rack House Steaks & Spirits and purchasing a $5 HSSM heart to display at the restaurants with your name.
Every little bit counts.❤️

🚨 NO MORE FREE PUPPIES! 🚨

We’re launching our No More Free Puppies campaign for Harrison County residents early this year because we are overwhelmed with unwanted litters being surrendered.

The Crisis We’re Facing:

📍 275 dogs currently in our shelter
🏠 50 dogs in foster care
📅 59 scheduled dog surrender appointments
📞 10+ more waiting to be contacted

This month alone, we have housed five litters. Despite 400+ Facebook shares, only one person stepped up to foster. Just last week, three owners came in back-to-back to surrender their litters. Had we taken them all in at once, we would have had 30 dogs in under an hour. We cannot sustain this. We do not want to euthanize for space.

How to Participate in Our No More Free Puppies Program:

✅ Email [email protected] to set up an appointment.
✅ We will vaccinate and medicate the litter.
✅ You will foster the puppies until they are ready for adoption, bringing them in for routine check-ups and medical care.
✅ Once ready, we will take them in and find them homes.
✅ We will spay the mom for free at our clinic when her body is ready for surgery.

🚨 Participation in this program for Harrison County residents requires both fostering the puppies and spaying the mother. 🚨

By working together, we can stop the cycle of unwanted litters and reduce the number of homeless pets in our community. Please help us save lives!

And if you are as passionate about this as we are, please visit hssm.org/beanadvocate and sign up for email alerts.

We are at capacity! Our animals need YOU, NOW!

Every single day, more lost and abandoned animals arrive at our doors, and we are running out of space. Despite an average of 28 families visiting daily, adoptions have slowed to as little as six in a single day. That is not enough.

These dogs and cats don’t deserve to spend another night in a crowded shelter, waiting for someone who may never come. They need homes. They need you.

Please don’t wait. View our adoptable animals, share this post, and visit us during our adoption hours:

Starved. Sick. Forgotten. But not beyond saving...

Every year, HSSM provides refuge to more than 5,000 animals—many arriving as strays, abandoned in empty lots, or discarded as unwanted litters because their owners failed to spay or neuter their parents. Their suffering is preventable. But without intervention, it continues.

Neglect doesn’t always look like cruelty in the way people imagine. Sometimes, it looks like a dog who’s been left outside too long, ribs visible beneath a dull coat. Sometimes, it looks like a pet who was once loved but later forgotten, left to fend for themselves in a world that isn’t kind to the unwanted. And too often, it looks like Piggly.

Piggly, a 2.5-year-old male Boxer, was found in Harrison County with his sister, barely surviving in filthy conditions. When they arrived at HSSM, both were skeletal—Piggly weighing just 28 pounds, his body starved of both food and kindness. Hookworms drained his already fragile system, and on top of it all, he tested positive for heartworm disease.

Heartworm disease is a deadly condition caused by parasitic worms that invade the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of dogs. Spread by mosquitoes, it slowly weakens an animal, leading to heart failure if left untreated. Treatment can be expensive and requires months of care, but without it, survival isn’t an option.

Piggly’s sister has since been adopted, and while he’s now a healthy 44 pounds, his journey isn’t over. He still needs a home—one that will continue his healing, and provide heartworm treatment.

At HSSM, we do everything we can to make heartworm treatment affordable through our Community Pet Clinic, but the reality is, many adopters struggle with the cost. Piggly has met several potential families, but time and time again, the cost of his treatment has been the reason they walk away.

That’s why we have the Have A Heart Fund—a dedicated fund to help cover treatment costs for dogs like Piggly. Right now, 67 heartworm-positive dogs are waiting for homes, but without financial support, many will continue to be overlooked.

If you can’t adopt but want to help, you can still make a difference. Donations to the Have A Heart Fund help ensure these dogs get the second chance they deserve. If Piggly’s story speaks to you, please consider giving—because no animal should be denied a home simply due to the cost of their survival.

A fighter, a survivor, and now… finally home. ❤️

Yesterday, our sweet boy Neo found his forever family! When he arrived at our shelter, he had a devastating injury—what we suspected was a gunshot wound to his groin and upper thigh. We weren’t sure if he would make it, but Neo proved he was stronger than the odds. Due to shattered bones, he needed a hind leg amputation, but that didn’t slow him down one bit thanks to our awesome veterinarian!

Neo made an incredible recovery while he healed in the care of our vet tech team, showing his resilience and unstoppable spirit. And now, he’s starting his next chapter with his new human brothers in a perfect, safe home.

Happy Adoption Day, Neo! 🏡🐾

Update: Adopted 💙

🚨 STOP SCROLLING, and meet one of HSSM's longest residents.

My name is Cole and I came to HSSM as a stray from Biloxi in the beginning of August 2024. I had hoped my owner would come to the shelter looking for me and take me back home, but no one ever came. Now it's been 𝟔 𝐌𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐇𝐒 and still no one has stopped by the shelter to look at me...💔

I promise I am a good boy! I love making friends with every dog I meet, am heartworm negative, AND friendly to all people. I will sit for a treat and I walk well on a leash. Wait until you see me with a rope toy! Those are my FAVORITE. We can play tug-o-war all day if you want to! I am still young and active, so I would love a home with a yard and a family to play with. I am amazing, right? People keep adopting my friends from the kennels to the left and right of me but they never give me a chance.

My shelter friends give me all the toys, peanut butter, and attention they can, but it's not the same as having a family of my own. I have been hanging in here at HSSM the best that I can, but if I am being honest, I'm starting to feel a little hopeless as the days go by. 𝐖𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐛𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞? 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐬 𝐈'𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮? Please do not make me wait any longer. Stop by the shelter today between 10am-5pm to meet me for yourself!

Clement and Marbles might be the sweetest pair of brothers we've cared for in a while. These brothers have been through so much, but never lost their charm. 🌟

Once pampered housecats, they found themselves abandoned outdoors when their family moved away. For months, a kind neighbor stepped up, feeding and caring for them as best as she could. But when the snow fell last week, and the cold crept in, she knew these boys deserved more than a makeshift life outside. With love in her heart, she brought Clement and Marbles to us, giving them a shot at the forever home they truly deserve.

These boys are everything you could want in companions: curious, affectionate, and bonded in the most heartwarming way. After all they’ve endured, they deserve nothing less than a family that will cherish them endlessly.

Stop by HSSM and meet Clement and Marbles today. Let’s make sure their next chapter is full of love, warmth, and the forever they’ve been waiting for
