We wrapped up with our “Paws for Praise” picnic today—and what a perfect day it was! The sunshine showed up, and so did our incredible volunteers, making it a truly special celebration.

A huge thank-you to our amazing friends at Chick-fil-A Gulfport for providing a delicious lunch, and to Allen Beverages for keeping everyone refreshed. It was a great day to reflect on the incredible impact our volunteers make on the lives of our shelter pets and mission.

These compassionate, dedicated individuals are the heart of HSSM. They’re true guardian angels, and we couldn’t do what we do without them.

Volunteer Spotlight: Meet the official Barkin' Basement . “Master of Merchandising”, Mrs. Nancy!

Nancy spends her time in HSSM’s Thrift Shop organizing and showcasing all the treasures that our generous community donates to the shelter. With every item she places on the sales floor, she’s not just creating a special shopping experience—she’s helping raise funds for the shelter pets who rely on us every single day.

Her flair for merchandising turns donated goods into irresistible finds, proving that every skill has a place in the HSSM volunteer family.

Today alone, over 30 families walked through our doors—and about half of them asked the same thing:
“Do you have any small dogs?”

And listen… we get it. Tiny dogs are adorable. They fit in purses, they wear sweaters, they’re basically living TikToks.
But here’s the thing: our small dog selection is limited right now. Meanwhile, our big dogs?
They’re HERE. They’re FABULOUS. And they’re TIRED of being overlooked.

Big dogs give full-body hugs.
Big dogs take up the whole couch (and your heart).
Big dogs are like weighted blankets that wag their tails.
Big dogs are adventure buddies, Netflix bingers, and soulmates wrapped in fur.

We’re running on a smaller Adoptions team this week, so if you stop by (please do!), we just ask for your patience. Our team is working hard to match each pet with the perfect home—and they’re doing it with love, hustle, and only minor caffeine-induced hallucinations.

HSSM currently has 𝟏𝟏 working cats spayed/neutered and ready to go home with you 𝐓𝐎𝐃𝐀𝐘! Stop by our Pet Resource Center between 10am-5pm to take one home for just $20.

The HSSM Working Cat program was created to give outdoor cats a second chance. Without adopters, they have nowhere else to go. If you have a working barn or safe, protected outbuilding, there are plenty of cats who need you right now.

These cats require minimal care. They must be fed once a day and be provided with a safe refuge to gain protection against the elements and to have a means to escape from natural predators.

Working cats provide a great service as they are a natural deterrent to rats and mice.

You won’t find her waving a wand—but the magic she brings to HSSM is real. Meet our incredible"𝑳𝒂𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒓𝒚 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒚" AKA Terry Steckler —a behind-the-scenes hero who makes sure every shelter pet has clean, cozy bedding to snuggle into each day.

While it may not be the most glamorous job, it’s one of the most essential, and she tackles it with kindness, care, and always a smile on her face. Thanks to her dedication, our kennels stay fresh, our pets stay comfortable, and our team is endlessly grateful.

It’s volunteers like Terry who prove that every role matters—especially the ones done quietly and with so much love.

Happy ! This week we'll spotlighting a few of our amazing volunteers and the extraordinary services they provide to our shelter pets. First up is Mr. Bob Nail - HSSM's Official Treat Master!

If you've ever heard a chorus of happy barks echo through the halls of HSSM, chances are Mr. Bob just walked through the door! 🐶

For years, Mr. Bob has been a daily ray of sunshine at the Humane Society of South Mississippi, arriving with both arms full of Cheerios and a heart full of love. Rain or shine, he’s here making tails wag and spirits soar with his endless supply of treats (and kindness)!

Affectionately known as HSSM’s official “Treat Master,” Mr. Bob is more than just a volunteer — he's a hero to our shelter pets. His dedication, warmth, and generosity remind us all of the power of compassion.

This National Volunteer Appreciation Week, we’re sending a giant THANK YOU to Mr. Bob for the countless wagging tails, happy noses, and full hearts he inspires every single day. 💙

Huge shoutout to our incredible “𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬”—these everyday heroes have volunteered their time (and playlists) to drive hundreds of miles, giving these shelter pets the ride of their lives toward a brighter future. You don’t have to do something huge to make a difference—sometimes, it just looks like walking into a shelter and falling in love.

Every kennel at HSSM holds a life waiting to be chosen. Dogs with wiggly tails. Cats who blink slowly when they trust you. Kittens learning how to play. Seniors who still have so much love to give.

When you adopt, you’re not just giving an animal a second chance—you’re making room for the next one who needs help.

We’re not asking you to fix everything. We’re asking you to make space for one.

Visit us! Walk through the kennels. Sit with a cat. Open your heart just a little and see what happens.

🚨 PSA from Ivy: the peanut butter and Velveeta situation is dire.

Our stock is DRY, friends. And while we can’t promise every dog gets a forever home TOMORROW, we can make sure their bellies are full—and full of something tasty, enriching, and exciting (aka not just kibble dust).

So we’re putting out the call:
🥜 PEANUT BUTTER
🧀 VELVEETA (because dogs have expensive taste)

Donations can be dropped off at HSSM Tuesday through Friday from 10am–5pm and Saturdays from 10am–4pm!

And to put a very sweet face to this call for snacks, meet Ivy.
Ivy is currently in foster care while going through heartworm treatment, but she’s still looking for a forever home—and someone to share snacks and snuggles with.

She’s house trained. She gets along great with cats. She loves soft toys, cozy couches, and making new friends. Tug-of-war? She’s in. Fetch? Let’s go. Long walks followed by long naps? That’s her perfect day. She’s a quiet girl, too, unless someone tries to take her cheese—can’t blame her for that.

APPLES WANTED!🍎

An apple a day keeps the doctor away! HSSM has started incoporating apples into our enrichment routine so when you're making your grocery list for the week, it would be pretty awesome if you could include an extra bag for our shelter pets!

We core them, stuff them with peanut butter, put them in the freezer, and then pop them out the next day for a delicious and healthy snack for our dogs. We don't even have to spend time cleaning up after them which leaves extra time for outdoor walks!

Donations can be dropped off at HSSM's Adoption Center Tuesday-Saturday. Thanks in advance!😋
