Monograph - Helichrysum
Helichrysum italicum, also known as the Curry plant, is in the Asteraceae family. It is an aromatic shrub with small yellow flowers with an aroma reminiscent of curry. The plant grows best in the sandy and rocky areas of the Mediterranean. The use of Helichrysum italicum dates back to ancient Greek civilization, where it was commonly used following battles to help control bleeding and bruising and reduce scar tissue.
Veterinary applications include hearing impairment, nerve regeneration, circulatory and blood vessel disorders, blood clots, bruising, heart disease, hypertension, liver disease, pain (can be used as a topical anesthetic), trauma (especially with bruising) and wound healing.
The stems and leaves are steam distilled to create the essential oil. It blends well with many other essential oils, is generally very safe, and well tolerated in many animal species.
