We are in Thunder season. Be aware that some pets may run, jump fences, or hide when frightened. Proactive medication, desensitization and, yes, a thunder shirt may help your pet remain calm!

FIREWORKS! This New Year's Eve, party hard, but party safe!
Fireworks cause terrible distress for animals! They panic & can hurt themselves trying to escape the noise. Fear is real - it's an emotion, not a behaviour. Get organised now.

- Make sure backyard is safe & escape proof!
- Provide shelter & a cosy den/covered crate.
- Keep your dog inside.
- Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence from health store.
- Thundershirt can calm.
- Play music or put the TV on loud.
- Use Sound Proof Puppy Training App to desensitise.
- It's OK to provide gentle comfort if your dog is scared!
- A Happy Hoodie may help keep the noise level down.
- Adaptil spray/collar can help calm - spray on bed, in house, on bandana, coat etc.
- Music free download - Through A Dogs Ear
- Consult your vet if your dog has injured itself in the past when anxious or stressed
- You could offer food in LickiMat or Snuffle mat, but dog may be too stressed to eat.
- Put a collar with ID on your dog!
- See vet for medication now!

NOTE: Medications such as Acepromazine should be avoided as they provide sedation without the anti-anxiety effect, and could potentially cause an increase in fear.

Happy New Year! Take care, keep safe, hug your dogs! ❤

So, exactly how cool is a dog's nose? Did you know:

💜 If a human can smell a sq**rt of perfume in a small room, then a dog would have no trouble smelling it in a sports stadium and also distinguishing its constituent ingredients.

💜 Dogs can detect odours up to 20 kilometres away or under 20 metres of water.

💜 Dogs can tell by scent alone if another dog is happy or hostile, healthy or unwell, and they can remember scents years later (of important people or a long-lost sibling, for example).

💜 Dogs can detect diseases in humans, including cancer and COVID-19.

💜 The canine nose typically houses about 300 million scent receptors (we humans typically possess a meagre 5 million) and their capacity to detect odours is between 10,000 and 100,000 times that of the average human.

💜 Each of a dog’s nostrils can operate independently, and dogs can breathe out while still attending to incoming odours, thanks to their elongated nostrils and an internal system that separates air for breathing from air for analysis.

💜 A big portion of the canine brain, about 40 per cent, is devoted to the task of interpreting all that incoming pong.
Dogs have a special secondary system (the unprettily named vomeronasal organ) that can detect odours at the level of individual chemicals and compounds.
