We have a special announcement, but first we would like to thank all of the fosters who took in kittens during the 2024 kitten season. Thanks to you our kitten stayed healthy, and got plenty of socialization that’s going to help them excel in any home they end up in. We couldn’t have done it without all of you! 🐈🐈‍⬛❤️

Due to the high number of cats and kittens we are doing a 2 for 1 special on kittens from now until further notice.

As of this morning, we only have ONE open dog kennel available. We greatly need the community to come through for the dogs in our care. If you have considered adopting, now is the time! As an animal welfare organization, we are excited that starting today, July 1, it is illegal to declaw cats in the state of Virginia. House Bill 1354 "makes unlawful the practice of declawing cats for any person engaged in the practice of veterinary medicine except as necessary for a therapeutic purpose, as defined in the bill". While most veterinarians in Arlington no longer perform this inhumane procedure, we recognize that this important bill will significantly decrease the amount of procedures being performed across the state.

Urgent Fosters Needed❗️❗️
We are currently in need of kitten fosters! We have had quite a few residents of our community reach out to us stating they have kittens in need of coming to the shelter. Without fosters, the shelter environment can be stressful and can cause the kittens to become unwell as their immune systems are not strong enough to fight off any sickness they may encounter. Our fosters do not have to buy any food, litter, toys, or supplies, we provide them with the necessary tools to help our kittens succeed! If this sounds like something you would be able to do, please fill out a foster application at the link below!

HSWC will be holding Wellness Clinics on June 27th and July 18th. For a complete list of services offered and associated fees, please visit hswcmd.org. Note: We will not be holding a Wellness Clinic in August.

HSWC is at capacity—full of wonderful, adoptable animals of all ages and sizes who are looking for their forever home. In an effort to make that happen, HSWC will be waiving adoption fees for all dogs and cats for a limited time. A donation in its place would be greatly appreciated, but our main concern is finding loving homes for these animals. All animals are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. Whether they have recently been made available for adoption or have been passed by for months, each one of them wants and deserves the same thing – a loving home. Regular adoption application and screening process still apply.

Our focus is unfriendly cats who are not able to be handled. But where did all these cats come from to begin with? Most came from friendly pet cats who became lost or abandoned. If EVERYONE fixed cats and kittens before making them part of the family, this would certainly aid in the reduction of the feral cat population.

🐈 If your neighbor offers you a cat, get it fixed!
🐈 Even if you never plan on letting your cat go outdoors, get it fixed!
🐈 If you think your kitty isn’t old enough to be fixed, find out! (It is safe to spay/neuter at 2lbs/2 months)
🐈 If you don’t think you need to fix your kitty because it’s a male, you’re wrong. Get him fixed!
🐈 If you want your female cat to give birth just once so you can witness the miracle of birth, go to your local shelter and foster a pregnant cat and get your cat fixed!
