Yes, we do adopt to residents of any state.

Interested in an animal who's still waiting on their spay or neuter? Ask to be placed on their list of interested adopters! Residents of Washington County, MD may be eligible to bring the animal home as a foster-to-adopt option.

To view our regular adoption fees and what all is included, please visit hswcmd.org/adoption-fees. TODAY ONLY, the only fees charged will be a $5 dog license (if applicable) and/or if the adopter needs to purchase a cardboard carrier ($8) or a leash/collar/harness in our retail section to safely bring their new pet home.

Waived adoption fees have repeatedly been shown in research to NOT negatively impact the outcome for animals. They do NOT result in higher return or abandonment rates. Our adoption procedures remain the same as always. The only thing that changes is the fee. Some adopters choose to donate anyway. Angry reactions and negative assumptions about our adopters do not help find homes for animals. HSWC has been at or over capacity this entire year. We are doing everything we can to find forever homes for these animals and appreciate the adopters (and fosters!) who are opening their homes and hearts whether they pay $5 or $300 at the time of adoption. Please be part of the solution instead of spreading negativity that could discourage potential adopters.

We encourage bringing in all family members (human and canine only) for meet and greets with our dogs. No appointment is necessary for a meet and greet.
