Our has many unhoused adults as well as unhoused children and elderly living with no heat. We need your help with warm attire.

Fifty Shades of Furr would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. I would like to take this time to praise the employees at Fifty Shades of Furr. This staff is relentless and work hard at taking care of your furrbabies. Rain, snow, sleet and excessive heat....they barrel through it for the furrbabies at our clinic. They are my rock and I appreciate them every day of the year. Tracy Barlup VMD, Susan Brown DVM, Ruth Woodward DVM, Julie Augustine DVM, Leeza Z DVM, Crystal Howell, David Mills and Venita Kauffman. I am so very proud of each and every one of you. It definitely takes a village. A special shout out to Cathy Wetzel who retired this year. She is a loving caring cat lady who has been helping cats all her life. She is missed. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

🚨🚨 HSWC IS CRITICALLY FULL! 🚨🚨

We need your help, and we need it as soon as possible! The shelter currently has ZERO empty dog kennels available, and animals in need continue to arrive daily. We are urgently in need of families who can adopt or foster.

Able to adopt? Don't wait! Now is the time! Adoption fees on all animals have been reduced to $20.25 through the end of the year. All come spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Visit hswcmd.org/adoption-gallery to see all of our available animals.

Can't provide a forever home? How about just 2 weeks? Sign up to foster! We are especially in need of fosters who are able to take large dogs. If you can give an animal a home for the holidays (at least through 12/31), visit hswcmd.org/foster-app and follow the steps to get started. Fostered with us before? Be sure to update your On Deck form to let us know what you're able to foster and when. HSWC will provide all you'll need to care for an animal in foster (food, supplies, etc). By fostering an animal in your home, you free up kennel space here at the shelter AND provide insight that will better help the animal find their forever home.

🚨🚨LAST DAY FOR WAIVED FEES🚨🚨

You can't buy love, but you can adopt it! And there's nothing like the love of a rescue animal. Don't miss your chance to give yourself/your family the greatest gift of all — a new best friend!

Visit hswcmd.org/adoption-gallery to view all of our available pets. Our Facebook messages are not monitored on the weekends, so please call 301-733-2060 option 3 for more information about or the availability of a particular animal.

Some FAQs:

✅ Yes, we do adopt to residents of any state.

✅ Interested in an animal who's still waiting on their spay or neuter? Ask to be placed on their list of interested adopters! Residents of Washington County, MD may be eligible to bring the animal home as a foster-to-adopt option.

✅ To view our regular adoption fees and what all is included, please visit hswcmd.org/adoption-fees. TODAY ONLY, the only fees charged will be a $5 dog license (if applicable) and/or if the adopter needs to purchase a cardboard carrier ($8) or a leash/collar/harness in our retail section to safely bring their new pet home.

✅ Waived adoption fees have repeatedly been shown in research to NOT negatively impact the outcome for animals. They do NOT result in higher return or abandonment rates. Our adoption procedures remain the same as always. The only thing that changes is the fee. Some adopters choose to donate anyway. Angry reactions and negative assumptions about our adopters do not help find homes for animals. HSWC has been at or over capacity this entire year. We are doing everything we can to find forever homes for these animals and appreciate the adopters (and fosters!) who are opening their homes and hearts whether they pay $5 or $300 at the time of adoption. Please be part of the solution instead of spreading negativity that could discourage potential adopters.

✅ We encourage bringing in all family members (human and canine only) for meet and greets with our dogs. No appointment is necessary for a meet and greet.
