Don’t let his solid build fool you—Hero is a total couch potato! And not just any couch potato—he’s a snug bug who absolutely loves to cuddle. In a home environment, he’s chill, clean, and steady—a rock-solid guy in both body and temperament. His big noggin holds an equally big heart, and he’s eager to find a place where he can relax and be loved.

Outside the kennel, Hero has plenty of energy and strength, and has made dog friends in play group.

If you’re looking for an adventurous boy that loves to kick back and relax, Hero is your guy!

Maui is a six-month-old wiggle worm who made his way to Mountain Humane from the L.A. Fires—ready to take on the world with boundless energy! This little adventurer is always on the move, eager to explore and zoom around town. When he’s not bouncing from one adventure to the next, Maui is all about his toys—any toy will do! Whether it’s a squeaky, a ball, or a tug rope, he’s happiest with something to play with. Like most puppies, he’s full of fun, curiosity, and a love for life.

We don’t want this sweet boy to grow up in the shelter. Maui is ready to find a family who will embrace his playful spirit, give him the space to build confidence, and, of course, spoil him with plenty of love (and toys)!

Happy Adoptaversary Bean! (Sheena)

This is what her parents have to say:

"Thank you for your one-year adopt-a-versary letter. We renamed Sheena “Bean” and our life in Seattle revolves around her. It took her a while to feel secure and get her routine down (she pretty much followed the exact schedule you predicted) but now she owns the place. She loves playing with (as in, destroying) her toys, going for two long walks/runs a day with my husband, taking turns napping with each of us in the afternoon, and perching between us (or on one of us) on the couch after dinner. She is catlike in her ability to always be lounging in a patch of sun somewhere in the house.

Bean is GREAT on a road trip; we just returned from a week exploring the Oregon Coast in mid-winter and she had her first off-leash experiences. Watching her explode down the beaches in delight was the highlight of our trip! And when we can’t take her with us, we have a house sitter who adores her and brings her to cheer up some friends who are shut in. We also have some close friends who are currently without their own dog, and they love Bean so much that they have started asking us to consider leaving her with them when we go away for a weekend even if we are going somewhere pet friendly.

Bean exudes joy and adorableness. After a couple of weeks of her being home with us, my husband said “I haven’t heard you laugh this much in years.” He was right!

It took us a good year to find Bean, but it was more than worth the wait. Thank you for taking her in from the other Idaho shelter, and for letting us bring her home."

Happy Life Bean!

Lady is a stunning two-year-old girl with unique and beautiful markings—her mostly orange face is accented by a striking touch of black. She has a curious and thoughtful nature, often found perched on the cat wheel, gazing out the window as the pups walk by.

True to her name, Lady is polite and respectful with her feline roommates. She doesn’t get caught up in any ‘cattiness,’ making her a calm and composed companion. With her grace and quiet curiosity, Lady is ready to find a home where she can watch the world go by—preferably from a cozy window seat!

Hike with Mike and the handsome Canelo!

"Canelo was a little shy at first, but once we stretched our legs on the way to the Draw, he was into the hike and a good companion---easy on the leash, appreciative of pets, and knowledgeable about sitting for treats.

Going up the Draw, he showed more interest in the big anthill than any other dog has done. Those ants will have some serious spring cleaning to do. He switched back and forth across the slope from the west side with its skiff of snow to the right side's interesting little bushes and dry tufts of grass.

The resting rock just below the mine site, which years ago had a thin crack across its face, is after this last winter, completely in two pieces. Canelo and I noted the passage of geological time.

At the top of the Draw, as Canelo sniffed and weaved back and forth, my body was thinking that Irene and I skied the last of the Big Four routes up at Galena yesterday, and maybe it was time to head down. Plus, that field of snow at the lip of the Draw might be good for some boot skiing. Nope, it was late in the day and the snow was too soft. FYI: maybe don't try to boot ski with a lively dog at the end of your leash. That last step was a doozy!

Fun Fact: Canelo is the brother of Rex, the handsome fellow I walked last week (and earlier in March, too). They don't look at all alike, but they're both a lot of fun to hike with."

Happy Trails Canelo!

Hike with Mike and Rex, the King!

"It's full-on spring here so there's lots of shifty weather. For a dog walk will it be snowshoes and poles or just hiking shoes? Should we stay on the iffy snowpack on the flats or head up a hill? We headed up.

First, though, was lots of amazing high-pitched chatter as we passed a couple of shelter dogs cavorting in the Bark Park. Rex, on occasion, is a talkative fellow. We headed up the dry, east ridge of the Draw - it's plenty steep and our progress was slow but steady.

At a rest stop we sat side by side, looking down at the shelter with its plowed walking trails and the abandoned bowtie ski trail behind it. Rex enjoyed some good pets, but then suddenly became interested in a spot right below my knees. He started to sniff and paw and then began outright digging. I leapt away as the dirt flew and the hole became big enough to swallow a dog's head.

We hiked up the ridge to where it met the trail just below the Promontory. The trail there, snowy in parts, was muddy, so we headed down. A hiker on the distant west ridge caught Rex's attention, and he remained on alert long after the fellow dropped below our line of sight. In the final few yards at the bottom of the Draw he came across something, unseen by me, great enough to trigger some vigorous rolling that sent him head first down the slope for yards. A good hike for man and beast."
