đŸ§»đŸŸ Public Plea for Empty Paper Rolls and Egg Cartons!
Help bring enrichment and joy to the animals at Mountain Humane!

We’re in need of empty toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, and egg cartons for our shelter dogs and cats.

These simple household items make excellent, inexpensive enrichment toys—perfect for keeping pets’ minds active and tails wagging!

đŸ¶ For dogs: roll and stuff treats inside to create puzzle feeders or shreddable toys.
đŸ± For cats: make treat dispensers that engage their natural hunting and problem-solving instincts.

The staff and animals at Mountain Humane thank you!

Flip Flop is a funny, lovable puppy with a shy streak and a playful heart. She likes to use her bed as a safety blanket—scurrying underneath it but peeking her head out to make sure you’re watching, like a game of peek-a-boo!

She’s the last of the “Shoe” puppies and a total sweetheart. With a little patience and love, Flip Flop will happily scurry her way into your heart and home—and keep you smiling with her silly, endearing games.

Hike with Mike and Starsky: Starsky's very slow day

"Having believed my stories about the vigorous hikes I take with shelter dogs around the Loop, our friend Suzanne joined me yesterday to experience such excitement for herself. Well...

Handsome Starsky is the brother of Hutch, who last week reluctantly (but sweetly) walked with me to the swinging chair. Starsky proved to be even more reluctant. Despite our best pets and treats, Suzanne and I couldn't move him beyond his placid anxiety. We inched forward about 100 yards before we changed our goal.

The best we could offer him was some off-leash time in the fenced Bark Park, where he moved around slowly while we tossed tennis balls, trying to find something that amused and invigorated him. All he wanted was to be petted and go back to the shelter.

The best result of our hour with Starsky is Suzaane's interest in becoming a regular volunteer at the shelter with hopes of engaging with more of the animals there."

Happy "Hiking" Starsky!

Meet Starsky and Hutch!

Just like their famous namesakes, Starsky and Hutch are different in all the right ways—and together, they make the perfect pair.

Starsky is energetic, intelligent, and full of playful charm. With his long legs and bouncy enthusiasm, he loves to bow and hop around, inviting everyone nearby to join the fun. He often looks to his brother for cues before diving into playtime, showing off his sweet and thoughtful side. His goofy grin and signature ear pop—one ear folding back in excitement—make him completely irresistible.

Hutch, on the other hand, is a tall, lanky fellow with an easygoing nature and a big heart. He’s immediately friendly and always up for an adventure—as long as it’s a slow one filled with affection and plenty of sniff breaks. On walks, his enthusiasm sometimes turns him into a lovable tripping hazard, joyfully weaving around his human’s legs at every turn. His idea of a perfect hike involves frequent pauses for pets and cuddles, even if you’ve barely made it down the trail.

Together, Starsky and Hutch balance each other beautifully—one full of lively energy, the other mellow and affectionate. Whether they’re romping, relaxing, or just being their goofy selves, they’re sure to fill any home with laughter, love, and plenty of personality.

Hike with Mike and Hutch, a slightly reluctant, very friendly walking buddy

Hutch was immediately friendly and ready to roll. But soon he was all tangled up in my legs, not with the leash but with his long, lanky body. It was hard to take even a step without tripping on him or stepping on his toes. As we inched along I realized this dog was not going to have fun or be fun if we attempted to do the Loop, so we, slowly, headed to the swinging chair above the Hailey swamps.

He made lots of sudden stops for pets and sniffing, too, and then would stand in front of me like dogs do when we're climbing and they've had enough, but we were barely 50 yards from the shelter on a flat and smooth trail. A few bikers, a runner, and a woman with a dog provided some local color, and one of the bikers congratulated Hutch on his good manners.

At the swinging chair Hutch and I enjoyed a good long pet, and then we turned back west. The shelter was within view and, suddenly, there was a spring in his step and a steady pull on the leash as we headed for home.

Happy hiking Hutch!
