Kiara and Slates story:

Kiara and Slate and two other siblings arrived at the shelter in the summer of 2024. Emotionally shut down, they hid away, too overwhelmed to interact. A medical check soon revealed they were battling severe upper respiratory infections (URIs) and struggling with anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, and fevers. They were very thin, and their condition was concerning. Our dedicated medical team stepped in, carefully monitoring them and adjusting their food and medications. At one point, they were separated to see if they would improve individually—but it quickly became clear that Kiara and Slate were a bonded pair. Without each other, their health declined even further. The moment they were reunited, they began to heal.

After seven months of care, love, and a special stay in the volunteer office, Kiara and Slate became staff favorites. It was decided they had to be adopted together, and finally, their perfect family found them! Now, these two are happy, healthy, and thriving in a loving home.

Hike with Mike and Kylie!

"Yesterday I finally was able to hike with a dog. Kylie is a real sweetheart, but those six weeks have brought us so much snow that the "hike" itself lasted only about 30 feet.

We started out just fine. Putting on the snowshoes with a curious dog's nose in the way is always good for laughs, but the depth of the snow made every movement tricky. The first steps off the semi-plowed trail around the shelter had me thigh-deep in snow. Dealing with my poles and bounding Kylie's leash meant instant tangles, and I teetered to keep my balance.

Each step was an adventure: Would I find firm footing a foot or two down or would I step onto a covered sagebrush and go deeper as my shoe twisted and plunged to the ground? It soon came clear that we were never going to get anywhere.

Heading back to the shelter had its own surprise. The inches of snow on the trail and the temperature of the air led to snow clumping on the bottom of my snowshoes so that I was rocking along, two or three inches taller than usual.

At the shelter door, I sat on the wall to share some last pets and treats. Kylie gently pawed the edges of the snowbanks there, sniffing to see if someone interesting might show up. Our short winter adventure ended on a quiet note."
