Hike with Mike and Kado, our resident fluffball!

"Kado leapt with excitement when Meghan introduced us, but he soon settled into the walk to Democrat Gulch, about a half mile west of the shelter. Our plan to hike up the ridge to a mine site was stymied by a sign blocking the little side trail: No Trespassing: Do Not Enter. OK, was that directed not only at ATVs or trucks but also at one dog with one human on a leash? Wondering, we turned to the other side of the Democrat road and ventured, for the first time onto the ranch land there.

It's a beautiful valley. On the far west edge we could see the willows that mark Democrat Creek, so we went to check it out. In the far past, there used to be a lively hot springs hotel there, now long gone. But the creek still flows and Kado, for one, was happy to go for a wade and lick its sulfury waters.

We wandered the valley but kept our eye on the ridge. The fence that shooed us away stops just beyond the No Trespassing sign, so we felt free to head up cross-country. We made it to some favorite rocks and sat down for a huge lapping of water and a major pet. Petting his deep coat is like hugging a pillow that hugs you back. He climbed halfway into my inadequate lap, and once sat looking at me and held out his paw for a handshake. I don't know why he's at the shelter, but it's obvious he's had a loving human somewhere in his past.

Heading down, again cross-country, we were blinded by the low winter sun and had to work to avoid the plentiful badger holes. Kado stepped into one and gave out a major yelp. We stepped aside for a few bikers who came down the Democrat road, but when a couple rode down with their dog trotting beside, Kado yanked hard on the leash and gave out a series of squeaks that thrilled little Freda, who had trouble following her humans' commands to move along.

Happy exploring and hiking, Kado!"

Hike with Mike and Bagels!

"Evelyn, one of the great staff members at the shelter, brought out Bagels, a beautiful bundle of nervous energy, who dragged me out the door for a hike. It was soon clear that a walk along the road to Democrat wasn't in the cards as Bagels circled me (always clockwise) at top speed and barked and pulled at every car. So we headed for the Draw.

The barking, the pulling, the jumping up, and the gnawing at the leash weren't much fun for me, or for her, I suspect, and I hoped that hiking the Draw, new carless territory for her, might calm her down. But first I had to slip under the bottom wire of the fence. Would she go wild, maybe even dangerous, when I got down on my hands and knees? I waited until the road was clear of those exciting cars and we both were under in seconds.

As we began the climb, she slowly shed her anxiety, stopped the whirling and leash-chewing, and by the time we reached the sitdown rock halfway up, she was a perfectly pleasant hiking companion, sitting for treats and leaning in for pets.

We took the elk trail cut-off, avoiding the steep climb to the Promontory. Here and there were thin patches of old snow that revealed elk tracks. At one stretch I saw what I think are bobcat tracks, but the snow and tracks are old and worn and I couldn't be sure.

A final sit-down on the last ridge down to the shelter was a pleasant moment of pets and treats. Thank you for the hike, Bagels!"

Playful sisters, Sadie and Pixie!

No audience, no pressure… just sisters being sisters. When they noticed us, everything paused and they stared back, wide-eyed and adorable.

Moments like this show who they truly are—loving, connected, and happiest when they’re together. Sadie and Pixie are looking for a forever home where they can keep growing, playing, and relaxing side by side… preferably with a bean bag included

Day 12 of the 12 Days of Dogmas – Meet Baron!

Baron is a handsome black pup with big, floppy ears that bounce like jingle bells every time he moves, giving him a delightfully goofy, endearing charm. His dark amber eyes are warm and expressive—full of curiosity, kindness, and a little holiday magic. His smooth, glossy coat catches the light as he stretches out, looking right at home in cozy winter moments.

And when it comes to spreading cheer, Baron has one favorite request: butt rubs. The second you find the right spot, his whole body melts—ears droop, eyes soften, and he leans back with the happiest wiggle, politely (and persistently) asking for more. It’s his favorite kind of attention, and he makes sure you know if you’ve stopped before the season’s cheer is complete. 🎁✨🐶
