Teaching our children in the homestead is not limited to simply books and curriculum which means that sometimes, you have to slow down in order to go faster.

🚜 Would farm chores get done faster if dad just did them? Probably...

πŸ«— Would dishes be more thoroughly cleaned with less broken mason jars if the parents just took care of it? More than likely!

🍽 Would dinner be ready on time at 5 instead of 6:30 if mom just rocked out her usual recipes? Without a doubt!

But our goal is not just to run our household well but to ensure that our children are equipped to one day run their household well or even better than us. We don't want them to fly out of our nest unprepared for life but equipped and confident because they have already 'lived it' in the safety of our instruction.

So, even though dinner was late tonight and could have used a bit more seasoning πŸ˜†, the extra time it took to allow Gideon to struggle through cooking a meal for our family of 11, will one day pay off not only for us but for his future family.

One day, he will get confident enough to take over dinner all on his own so mom can work on something else.

One day, he might pass down his knowledge to one of his younger siblings.

One day, he might invite a young lady over to experience his special, homecooked meal.

Hopefully, one day, he will invite his elderly parents over for a (perfectly seasoned) dinner, ready to be served prompty at 5 pm sharp, where we will see our little investment of time and patience pay immeasurable, multigenerational dividends!

History Behind Provision

It all started in June of 2011. Newlyweds Aliesha and Austin, with their whole life ahead of them knew they wanted two things: a large family and a more sustainable lifestyle. They started out with a small garden of watermelons while staying with family, then intense brainstorming while living in an apartment, the discovery that baby number two was on the way, which then led to a rental house with a lot of container gardens and an assorted orchard of potted fruit trees. With a third child on the way, the King family finally found themselves in a position to purchase their first home. However, due to their budget, these first-time home buyers had to compromise resulting in a smaller piece of land. They settled for a well-built house on a small, one third of an acre lot, in a residential area. In four productive years, their yard (and house) were bursting at the seams with fruit trees, edible landscaping, and a lot of cute critters (including babies four & five.) With the news of baby number six on the way and the property already at max capacity, they reluctantly sold their first home/permaculture paradise. Tears were shed but with the sad closing of one door, another exciting door opened, thus leading to the birth of Provision Homestead. The eight years leading up to this exciting time were times of trial & error, learning & testing, developing & designing that according to God’s Provision prepared us for this next step in life’s journey. It is this new journey that we would like to share with you!
