Kenzley thoroughly enjoyed auditing a Jacob Anderson Ranch Versatality clinic today at the Twin Buttes Fairgrounds. I am thankful that she is so eager to learn more horsemanship regardless of what discipline it is. She is definitely becoming well rounded in her knowledge and I was impress by her notes. Now if only she could be that dedicated to school work.

Jacob is such a good teacher and so good with kids to boot. Highly recommend his clinics for people at all levels & disciplines!!! You will learn so much. I love horsemen with thought process like me who likes to think outside the box also.

Find him on Lucky Diamond A Performance Horses or his private page....

Backing your horse does what…? 🤨

I was scrolling through Facebook the other night and came across a post that’s getting a ton of attention—hundreds of shares, tons of comments. And the problem? It’s not true.

The post claimed that backing up a horse causes lumbar, SI, hock, and stifle issues. That backing goes against their natural movement. That horse’s are being forced onto their hind end causing them to suffer.

Now a good friend of mine acknowledged this person that made the post is a wealth of knowledge so I’m glad this post, despite being wrong on this topic, brought her onto my radar so I can learn from her. Just because we don’t agree on everything doesn’t mean we can’t learn from each other (it’s called being an adult😉). I’m a firm believer that together we all rise.

So here’s the real deal. Backing a horse up does not go against their natural movement patterns, it strengthens them.

The exact same issues blamed on the rein back/backing up occurs in horses that move forward with poor posture.

Because it’s not the back up that’s the issue…

Trail horses, hunter-jumpers, reiners—it doesn’t matter the discipline or the breed.

If a horse is moving heavy on the forehand, hollow through the back, not engaged from their hind end, they’re putting unnecessary stress on their SI, their hocks, their stifles, and creating long-term soundness problems.

The exercise of backing up does NOT cause these issues.

It’s how the horse is using their body—in ANY direction.

When done correctly, backing is one of the BEST ways to strengthen a horse’s body.

And some of the leading equine biomechanics experts and horsemen with real experience developing horses will tell you too back is one of the most beneficial exercises for developing balance, strength, and preventing injuries.

Proper Backing Requires & Strengthens…
- Engagement of the hindquarters (instead of trailing out behind)
- A lifted back (instead of sagging and straining the spine)
- True collection (for many horses, it’s their first real experience of it)

Of course, too much of anything done poorly will cause problems. And too much of anything can be a bad thing.

Backing in bad posture, just like moving forward in bad posture, creates compensation patterns and strain.

But when done correctly, the rein back teaches a horse to use their body properly, builds their strength, and improves their ability to carry a rider forward with softness, better balance and strength.

If you want a stronger, more balanced, more engaged horse, go back them up.

Not just a few sluggish steps—really make sure they are putting in some effort, that they are balanced, reaching (not dragging) with their legs, and engaging their core.

And if you want to see how rein back builds your horse’s top line, I did a YouTube video last fall that many of yall loved where I show the importance of backing. If you comment YES and I’ll send the link to you.

The bottom line? The internet is full of misleading information and I’m always looking for what is principally true.

I try to look beyond emotional language and even those that use fancy words to sound qualified.

The question we have to ask ourselves is- Is what is being said principally true because true principles stand the test of time and all situations.

Now, go back your horse up. Properly.

Together We Rise.

If you have a horse you are called to be horseman. Yet many make excuses for not stepping up…

Everyone wants the companionship, the partnership, the abilities, the feeling, the freedom... that comes with being a horseman.

But horsemanship isn’t a feeling. It’s a responsibility.

A responsibility to put the horse’s needs first. To show up, every day, with the discipline to improve yourself so you can be better for your horse. To lead with clarity. To do what’s right and needed, not just what feels good.

Most people ‘just’ want to have fun with their horse doing what they enjoy. Most don’t want that kind of responsibility. Yet when you have horses, it is your responsibility regardless if you want to or not.

And I do believe horses are here for us to enjoy, yet the fact is, with horses and in life the way we get to enjoy things we want and desire is by first serving others.

Those who actually step up and take responsibility for the role they have taken on… Those are the real horsemen.

As a horseman…
1. The needs of the horse comes first. Always.

Not your wants, desires, goals, or timeline. Not what makes you feel comfortable or cozy. The horse’s needs dictate what needs to be done. You serve the horse first, and when you do the results, your goals, your dreams are able to follow in abundance and quality.

2. You fix yourself before you try to fix the horse.

The horse is NOT a mirror to your soul. Your horse responds to who you are- physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. If there’s a problem, the first place you look is within yourself and then to your horse.

3. You don’t avoid challenges—you welcome them.

Growth and comfort dont live in the same arena or barn. Growth only happens when there’s pressure, challenges, and sometimes even struggle. That doesn’t mean we go out creating more trouble- absolutely not- yet when it arises in the learning process a real horseman does not shy away those challenges with their horse. Instead, they guide them through it building deeper partnerships and skills.

4. Your emotions don’t run the show.

Your horse doesn’t need your frustration. They don’t need your fear, your self-doubt, or your ego. They need leadership. They need presence, clarity, vision, patience, consistency. You stay present on your horses needs and you feel whatever you need to feel after the session.

5. Pressure is not the enemy. Confusion is.

Pressure is part of learning. Nothing creates a more frustrated horse than a human driven by emotion with a lack of decisiveness, consistency and awareness of the horse. A horseman knows it’s not the amount of pressure but rather the timing and significance of the release that makes the biggest difference.

6. Boundaries create confidence.

A horse that knows the boundaries are consistent and supportive feels safe and can fully submit. Leadership means serving them, giving them structure, clarity, and trust.

7. You let the horse think.

Micromanaging creates robotic, neurotic and anxious horses. You present the question, give them the time and ability to make their own decision, let them figure it out then guide and support them as necessary.

8. You learn from every horse.

A true horseman never stops being a student. Every horse has something to teach you—if you’re humble enough to listen. When the student is ready, the teacher appears.

9. The goal is not short term gratification. The goal is setting that horse up for a lifetime of success.

What we do with our horse develops their skills. How we do it develops the partnership. A horse that is forced to perform is not the same as a horse that chooses to.

10. You reflect, you refine, you return.

After every ride, you analyze what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve. You don’t just do more, you do better.

11. You lead by example.

You don’t demand respect, you earn it. You don’t just teach the horse discipline, you live it. Your horse is always responding to who you are. The question is: are you someone worth following?

We are all called to be horsemen but many will never step up because they are too focused on themselves. For those who choose this path to do what is best for the horse, there is no deeper reward.

The world needs more real horsemen.

The world needs more real leaders.

“Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.”

The same goes for our horses.

Have a awesome day big dreamers, deep thinkers, chance takers, memory makers. If we meet along the way know that you will have my support & encouragement on whatever you doing. Theres beauty in everyones journey even if our journey dont look the same. Dont be a critic or an opinion naysayer of others. Remember opinions are the lowest form of human knowledge. People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character. Learn to love and accept people regardless of where they are at in life.

Love GOD and let HIM transform your
life to Love people in the hard places!!!!

****

I read this couple years ago and shared it on my private group with a video. It just popped up again hence the resharing. Its something thats been sitting with me for a long time. Maybe it will mean something to you to!!!

Copied & Pasted

Judged anyone lately?

Sadly, the answer for most of us (including me) is… yes.

From the guy who cut you off in traffic, to the off-beat person who’s not picking up the social cues you’re sending, to your weed-smoking neighbour… it’s so easy to judge.
It’s also fundamentally incompatible
with authentic Christian faith. Jesus said Christians should be known for how deeply we love. Yet studies show that in the eyes of many non-Christians, we’re known for how deeply we judge, not for how deeply we love.

Christians will argue: well,
who’s going to stand up for truth?

Understood....Yet in Jesus, grace and truth are perfectly fused.

🙏🏼Remove grace from the truth and you don’t actually have truth at all, but a cold, steely imitation. (This is the shadow side of conservatism.)

🙏🏼The opposite is also true, of course. Remove truth from grace and you don’t have grace, but a spineless imitation. (As you’ve already figured out, this is the shadow side of liberalism.)

🙏🏼Fusing grace and truth is an exceptionally difficult venture and is usually only successful when you spend significant amounts of time on your knees and when the source of your attempt is actually Christ himself. I am rarely good at it, flipping from one side to the other too quickly.

🙏🏼But when you see grace and truth fused, it takes your breath away. Why did people travel for days on foot in extreme conditions to meet Jesus? Grace fused to truth is what our hearts most deeply long for.

🙏🏼But in the, the hard edge of truth has crushed many. And one of the most frequent expressions of loveless truth is found in judgment.

🙏🏼Love: The presence of judgment almost always guarantees an absence of love.

🤲🏼Help: Ever notice that people who judge almost never help and people who help almost never judge? That’s because judgment creates a line. The line is labeled “better than” or “smarter than” or “more righteous than” the person who needs help.

❤️Humility: Judgment is never grounded in humility (As in oh my, I’m also a mess. Let’s figure this out together.)

👉🏼Judgment is grounded in arrogance. That’s because a judgmental person almost always carries with them a sense of condescension (I never get into this kind of situation myself…you should be as good as I am) or a sense of pity (poor, stupid you).

👉🏼Judgment always says I’m better than you, I know more than you and I’m also superior to you. No wonder people run from it.

❤️Very few people get judged into life change. Many people get loved into it.

👏🏻Humility, by contrast, fosters empathy. It says “I’m like you. I get that. Maybe we can help each other.” Many people would run to that.

🙏🏼Prayer: There’s also a connection between judgment and prayer. Judging someone and praying for someone are pretty much mutually exclusive. You can’t pray for someone you judge because you’re actually not for them. Sure, you can pray about them, but again, your prayer won’t be grounded in humility. It might be grounded in anger, or in arrogance, or superiority, but it won’t be grounded in love.

💡You never truly pray for someone you judge.

🙏🏼👉🏼Conversely, if you want to stop judging someone, pray for them. It’s impossible to judge someone and truly pray for them at the same time. People run from people who judge them. They run to people who love them. Think about it; that’s what you do: you run from people who judge you.

🙏🏼❤️When grace and truth are fused, people usually run toward it because the combination of truth and grace describes a reality they’re facing and brings actual hope that things can get better.

🧐One of the things I struggle today is that we rush to judge and RARELY LOOK IN THE MIRROR. That’s the exact opposite of what Paul instructed us to do.

🥺The reality is that people’s lives are plagued by problems. There is an epic battle raging in this life, and people get taken down every day over addictions, failed relationships, misguided beliefs and things that we think will give life, but, in the end, only destroy.

❤️We need to help because we have been helped. We need to help each other on the inside and thereby better realize our mission.

True judgment is reserved for God.

Discernment seeks to help.

❤️Discernment says there is a problem, but lovingly, humbly, prayerfully, empathetically I’d love to help with that. And guess what? The person on the receiving end of the help senses it. They know when they’re being judged. And they know when they’re being loved and help.

And if this article still strikes you as harsh, remember that Jesus’ harshest words were reserved for arrogant, judgemental leaders inside the faith. At times, we’ve likely all been that insider. I have been anyway. Conversely, Jesus was pretty much never harsh to people outside the faith.

We’d all be so much better if we did the same especially me......
