🐸 The wood frog is no Caribbean amphibian! In fact, they are very well adapted to surviving cold winters in Maine and unlike all other frogs, they can even be found north of the Arctic circle. While we are snowmobiling, skiing, and snowshoeing through Maine’s snowy forests, wood frogs are tucked in under rocks, logs, and leaflitter, sometimes frozen solid, and waiting for spring. 🧊 As their bodies approach freezing they stop breathing and their heart stops beating, but as temperatures rise they thaw out and are one of the first species to return to vernal pools for breeding. What a cool species!

Wood frogs are easily identified by their dark mask. 😎 Their overall color can vary from tan to reddish-brown, they have defined ridges on their backs, and lighter color on their upper lip and underside. You can help biologists learn more about wood frog abundance and distribution by contributing sightings to the Maine Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Project (MARAP).
