As we head into flea and tick season I thought this was worth another share. This is what we have done for years now as far as flea and tick preventative. We’d also like to add Wondercide to that regimen as it is a bit easier than making our own spray solution up. You can get it at NorthPoint Pets & Company, our absolute favorite pet store! Good luck fellow flea and tick warriors!

Good morning! If you’re near North Branford today check out a great cause. Local kids are selling homemade pup cups to benefit the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter. As long as when we stop by we don’t clean them out with all our dogs and we’ll get one for the cats too. 🤭🫣😜

We’ve got an exciting couple of weeks ahead of us.

Saturday Oct 28 we will be graced with Tina’s presence. She will be visiting from 10-12 to see any customers who miss her and want to catch up on all the things. Party time!!

We will also be raising money for two tough local cases: Luna at the Hamden Animal shelter who needed to have extensive surgery before being placed up for adoption, and Serenity with Army’s Legacy Animal Rescue and Sanctuary who is in dire medical condition.

All toy purchases, nail trims and self serve between now and October 28 will be matched and donated to these two organizations to help these two sweet girls. Please please share and get the word out. Also, another business is matching all donations to Serenity so anything you give will be quadrupled (…we think….math is rusty, lol)!!

Oh I love this! So many times we see owners struggling to control their dogs putting themselves and ultimately their pets at much greater risk of injury. Great info! Hope it helps.

LET’S TALK TOOLS

Red Arrow: Harness that fits around the dog’s body and when connected to a clip leash, creates a pulling reaction from the dog. This pulling reaction triggers the shoulders and chest muscles to be used which then influences the dog to use strength to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk right next to you on a harness, you will not experience the pulling. Congratulations, I have yet to see this. 😂

Orange Arrow: Flat collar, usually used to connect a clip leash to and often times sits on the bottom of the neck due to gravity and the dog’s head being higher than the shoulders. This then triggers the dog’s shoulder muscles and the pulling starts. Again, this teaches the dog that strength needs to be used to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a flat collar, you will not experience the pulling. The majority of dogs I see are pulling during this setup.

Blue Arrow: Slip Leash is very high on the neck where it is placed behind the ears, behind the jaw bone, and it allows us to influence the dog’s head and brain. Shoulders and chest muscles are not triggered and physical strength is not used during the walk. When used correctly, little to no pressure is on the leash and physical strength is used by the dog to get from point A to point B. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a slip leash, you will not experience any pulling.

Out of the 3 tools shown, the slip leash is one of the most productive tools to create a structured walk, a calm mind, and a solid relationship.

Ever watch anyone walk a horse by the saddle?

Yeah, me either.

That’s because when you walk a 1000lb animal, you need to influence the brain and not the body.

Let’s start influencing our dog’s mentally and not physically.

Happy Friyay, Little Shoppers! We are hitting the road for our summer vacation and will be back to return calls, texts and emails starting Tuesday July 25.

Lately we are hearing that we have not been returning people’s voicemails. This is not our business model! We called our phone provider and discovered that 23 messages have gone unheard that we were never aware of. We will be going through those messages and returning calls during our vacation time. If you left a message and never heard back from us, we apologize for how that appears and hope we have remedied the situation. Thank you for your patience and understanding. This is true for more than just Aussies! We often receive requests to shave down double coated dogs because they are ”too hot”. The best thing you can do for them is regular brushing either at home or at the salon to remove excess undercoat which inhibits proper airflow and that is what keeps them hot. Also notice that pitbulls and Dalmatians are hot in the summer, length of coat has nothing to do with heat tolerance.

As the weather warms up you might be tempted to shave or clip down your Australian Shepherd to keep them cool.

STEP AWAY FROM THE CLIPPERS!

Science has proven that double coated (guard or top coat and undercoat which is fluffy and soft) breeds should not be clipped down but should instead be kept throughly brushed to remove the dead undercoat. The undercoat is vital in keeping your Australian Shepherd warm in the winter AND cool in the summer. If you shave them, they’re unable to regulate their heat naturally which makes them more susceptible to heat stroke and sunburn to the skin.

Instead, grab a regular metal comb and “line comb” the dog to remove dead undercoat. Go slowly.. line by line down to the skin. This will help your dog keep itself cooler and reduce shedding in your home!
