Excellent suggestions for puppy socialization while maintaining social distance! 🙂

Training your puppy or dog can still be maintained during the Coronavirus crisis. Sheltering in place means one can only go out for essential reasons, food, pharmaceuticals, doctor appointments, veterinarian appointments and in my world walking our dogs. It’s essential for everyone’s health and ...

Reading beyond the headlines is important, no matter what the subject. When you see an article that discourages the use of food in dog training, be wary!

Something to carefully consider with regard to dog training (and working with people).

Fights between dogs seldom happen “out of the blue." Keep dogs safer when they are playing with other dogs off-leash.

I often hear 'he seemed fine' when ask about a dog's before just prior to a reactive or aggressive display. Here's a great description of why 'fine' is not necessarily good enough. Especially important with the holidays this week. Be sure your dog is not just 'fine', but relaxed and comfortable. Provide them a quiet place where they can get away from busy holiday celebrations, and if you know your dog is already nervous, it is totally ok to keep them in their crate in a quiet spot, or keep them in a room where guests will not go.
My dogs love people and want to be in the midst of the party, but at my holiday celebrations, they are not included the whole time because I do not want to be training during my entire party. They are always learning, and you may have some 'untrainers' in your family like I do! Carefully consider your canine family member during the holidays.

https://positively.com/contributors/how-to-stop-your-dog-from-biting-the-leash-on-walks/
Something that I see happen frequently is the dog happily grabbing the leash and trying to turn the leisurely walk into a game of tug. This can lead to frustration and a sore arm. So how do we solve this problem?

Behavior is never static. There is no such thing as 'my dog would never do x'. There most certainly is a circumstance where even the most reliable dog will run off or not come when called.

Here's another video of Jasper working with one of our volunteers.
Jasper is Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford. He's a available for adoption, and needs to go to a home with active adults who are prepared to help him build confidence when meeting new people. He's a great candidate for the Control Unleashed program, and I think he would blossom with some behavior modification. He may eventually be a good prospect for casual agility competitors.

This handsome guy is Jasper. He's at the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter in Branford. He's a little timid at first, and also needs some reactive behavior modification, but he's a sweetheart and I think he would blossom as he builds confidence, and may be a good agility prospect for a casual competitor. Before today, I hadn't seen him in over a month, and he snuggled right up to me. I would take him myself if I had the time. Please share him.

Some happy news to make your Saturday night! Duke, pictured below enjoying a bone and sporting his new freedom harness, was adopted from the Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter today. He is settling in well with his new mom Michelle Wininger and his new sister Lacy. She's relaxing on her bed while he calmly chews his bone. Duke is a young boy who has some energy, so we're happy to see him being so good around his new sister. :)
