The Companion Animal Hospital

The Companion Animal Hospital The Doctors and Staff at Companion would love to see your pet today! The practice originally began in the early 1950s by Dr. Joe Austin.

Companion Animal Hospital is the oldest veterinary practice in the Hammond/Ponchatoula area. He primarily serviced the dairies of southern Tangipahoa and would do some small animal practice when he had the time. In the 1980's Dr.Karan Gillane and Dr Ron Gilbert took over and grew the practice into what it is today. As more small clinics are being bought out by corporations, Companion remains a loc

ally owned full service hospital. Moving into 2022 under the new ownership of Dr. Taylor McCain Companion Animal Hospital strives to provide the most modern services while maintaining the home town, personalized experience our clients have come to expect.

When we are inside on beautiful, warm days, the outside calls to us, and it’s easy to jump off our couches and take our pups for a long walk. However, in the cold month of January, it can understandably be a little more difficult to drag yourself out of your cozy home, and dog walks may feel more ...

Ultrasound isn’t just for sick visits!

Early Detection, Early Intervention
Preventative ultrasound for pets is a non-invasive imaging technique that allows veterinarians to detect potential health problems early on, when they are most treatable.
● Heart disease(image 1): Ultrasound can detect early signs of heart disease in dogs and cats, such as enlarged heart chambers, thickened heart walls, and abnormal heart valves.
● Liver disease(image 2): Ultrasound can detect early signs of liver disease, such as fatty liver, cirrhosis, and tumors.
● Bladder stones(image 3): Ultrasound can detect bladder stones, which can cause pain and discomfort in pets.
● Kidney disease: Ultrasound can detect early signs of kidney disease, such as enlarged kidneys, cysts, and tumors.

When to Schedule a Preventative Ultrasound
The frequency of preventative ultrasound exams will vary depending on your pet's age, breed, and overall health. However, most veterinarians recommend that all pets over 8 years old have a baseline ultrasound exam when they are healthy , and then follow-up exams as needed.

What about monitoring a current issue?
● Pregnancy: Ultrasound can be used to confirm pregnancy in dogs and cats, and to monitor the development of the fetuses.
● Medical Monitoring and Maintenance: Ultrasound can help us monitor the progression of your pet’s diagnosis by giving us images of your pet’s organ function in real time. It can help us make decisions about medications and follow-up visits. It can help keep us up to date on your pet’s prognosis so that you can make an informed choice about their care.

We would also recommend an Ultrasound with any abnormalities in bloodwork, significant changes in weight, and any signs or symptoms of the diseases listed above.
