Animal Aid Society

Animal Aid Society A happy place for dogs in transition between homes. Volunteer run since 1971. Animal Aid Society is an all-volunteer organization!

On average, the AAS volunteer force contributes 900 hours of every month, which translates to just under $275,000 annually in donated labor. Everyone from the daily dog walkers, the marketing team to the board members donates their time to create a safe haven for homeless dogs. That means that AAS is able to invest 100% of all donations and fundraising monies to provide for the dogs in their care.

To encourage this passion in future generations, AAS partners with community groups (scouts and athletic teams) to create volunteer and educational opportunities for local teens and young adults. Families with children are encouraged to come and walk dogs in their park-like facility as a bonding experience and volunteering opportunity all rolled into one. The rescue strongly believes that the connection and interaction of volunteers with the animals results in a higher level of healing for both the volunteers and the animals. From walking and socialization to fundraisers and adoption events, volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operation of the rescue. They are so tiny we had to split “itty-bitty” into two names.
Meet Itty and Bitty - two-year-old pocket-sized Beagles ready to fill your heart to bursting.
Itty (male) and Bitty (female) came from an overcrowded rural shelter.
Their past isn’t known, but its shadow is dark.
They shy away from people, and when cornered, they crouch low as if expecting the worst.
But as our Beagle fans know - NOTHING can keep a Beagle down!
Beagles are joy, curiosity, comic timing, love and loyalty, topped off with floppy ears. With patience and safety, Itty and Bitty's sparks will catch.
Itty and Bitty are NOT BONDED and can be adopted separately. Each feels most at ease with other dogs, so a steady “helper pup” could make their transition easier. Itty is heartworm-positive, but Animal Aid covers all treatment costs, even after adoption.
Come meet them and see what we see: two tiny souls ready to learn that life can be safe, people can be kind, and home can be forever.
Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton. Visiting hours are 9am to noon daily, including weekends and holidays.

Ricky was a surprise for us. In a good way. We usually take in hounds - all colors, sizes and shapes - and some pitbulls and now small dogs. But a handsome, 8-year-old Schnauzer? We got lucky.

Ricky is just 11 pounds and most of it is his legs - they are so long! He was found as a stray and immediately had a dental because of an abscessed tooth. He is feeling much better and getting more comfortable day by day.

But an 8-year-old in a shelter doesn't have the easiest time. It can be loud and a bit unsettling. And we know Ricky is having a bit of a hard time because whenever people are not in his sight, he vocally begs for them to come back. A cry, a bark, a plea to please just come back and spend time with him.

But he is so endearing. He is charming beyond words and your immediate thought is - we need to do all we can, as soon as we can, to find Ricky his final family. A place to call his own and to have the best years of his life.

Can you help us? Please share Ricky's story! He is too handsome and fabulous to still be searching for his family. We know you are out there somewhere - please come meet this amazing boy!

Ricky and his friends are available to meet every single day from 9am-12pm!

I didn’t know a Mini Red Heeler was a thing.
But it is - and it’s glorious.
Imagine a soft, magical fox who weaves wit, wisdom, and wonderment into a 25-pound frame.
That’s Rhoda.
You need to meet her, because words alone can’t capture the whiplash delight of a dog who vaults shoulder-high in one breath, then melts into your lap for belly rubs the next. When she sprawls across you, her eyes flutter shut and a blissful smile spreads across her face.
In that moment, you feel like you’ve cracked the code to the universe.
Fair warning: she will work very hard to kiss you while she’s at it.
Rhoda’s a collector. Each day she inspects her yard for anything new - a toy, a brush, a freshly fallen twig. When she thinks you’re not looking, she snatches it up and tucks it away in her kennel for future contemplation and enjoyment.
At only a year old, Rhoda came to us from an overcrowded rural shelter, so her past is a mystery.
But she’s smart, athletic, and very likely housetrained. She greets other dogs with friendly curiosity, and though she’s endlessly gentle, we recommend no young children - herding dogs like Rhoda are natural nudgers, and little ones (or their friends) may not appreciate being “organized.”
Rhoda needs a person or persons who will exercise her body and mind, and then invite her to collapse into their laps at night. She’s the perfect mix of sparkle and serenity, a fox-sized wizard who will turn your ordinary days into something magical.
She may be a bit shy when you first arrive - she’s smart enough to know the world can be a scary place and people can be unkind. But give her a minute to sense you’re safe, and you’ll find yourself wondering how you ever made it this far without a Mini Red Heeler in your life.
Rhoda is collecting novelties and biding her time at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are daily, including weekends and holidays, from 9 a.m. to noon.

FIVE more adoptions this week! We are spreading love and happiness one rescue at a time!
Ginger, Woody and Stewart deserve an extra amount of applause - they have completed their treatments and are now heart worm free! Their compassionate adopters took them home as medical fosters so the pups could have a quiet, safe place to enjoy throughout their treatment and recovery. Now that they are healthy, the adoptions are official! THANK YOU!

And little Juju and dainty Harper - our first two guests in our new Panda's Place section for small dogs - have their forever homes full of love! Congratulations!!

Assertively affectionate. That's how these two brothers have been described. So, not a bad thing at all - more like a fair warning, these two boys aim to get some love and affection from you.

But their names could not be any more fitting. Sundae, with the pink nose, looks like he just licked the bottom of a bowl of strawberry ice cream. Whimsy, with his one ear up and one ear down posing, looks like he just had a great idea for doing the best thing ever - which could be anything from finding a treat to running free in a field of toys.

These two handsome boys are a year old and are transfers from another shelter. They are not bonded but are making the most of their time together. We have discovered that when they play together in our Garden, their gentle side comes out. They appreciate the flowers and plants and all the smells.

Whimsy and Sundae are each about 45 pounds and shouldn't get too much bigger. But, even if they do get a bit bigger, it just means more joy and love for all of those around them.

We are so used to our shy hounds, so openly affectionate dogs are a sweet gift. Please take a chance on these amazing boys - they are each just waiting for their fun families to find them!

Whimsy and Sundae are available to meet every single day from 9am-12pm! Come find your fun!

Animal Aid Society is a 100% volunteer-run, no-kill dog shelter that’s been serving Coastal Virginia since 1971. What began on a small scale has grown into a seven-acre, 41-kennel refuge where every dog gets veterinary care, good food, play, and love until they find a forever home.
But one need kept surfacing: the small dogs. Our kennels were built for medium and large breeds, and while we’ve welcomed little ones when we could, they were never fully at ease living next to 70-pound neighbors. Many of these smaller dogs come from the hardest places - hoarding cases, abandonment, neglect. They need not just space, but safety and security sized to them.
That’s why we built Panda’s Place – a dedicated six-run section just for dogs under 25 lbs, with climate-controlled rooms and outdoor porches. It’s named for Panda, a big, warm, joyful dog who spent his final years at AAS. Though he was never adopted, Panda had a forever home in our hearts. We like to think of him now looking down at his little friends, wagging as they finally get the safe haven they deserve.
In less than a week, every kennel was full. Panda’s Place is already a refuge for the tiniest pups who need protection, comfort, and time to heal before finding a home.
Come visit us at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are daily, between 9am and noon, including weekends & holidays. The next little best friend waiting at Panda’s Place might be yours!

Life as they knew it will never be the same.

They are each about ten-years-old.

Their owner passed away and they were left, in their sickened state, for the family to find. Family arrived from out-of-town and were left to figure out the last chapter for these dogs.

It turns out that all three were ravaged by fleas, probably for years. And by ravaged we mean damage the likes of which we have never seen before.

The "flea dirt" on one of them was caked liked mud all over him. The other two have large areas of missing hair.

But worse than that - they all were suffering from flea anemia. Some blood values related to anemia were the lowest they could be without them collapsing.

Excellent vet care has allowed them all to slowly rebound. Their energy is slowly but surely returning, their appetites are returning and we are starting to see a sparkle in their eyes.

The best medicine for each of them would be their own homes, their new families and the constant love of people. Essentially, it would be the best chapter of their lives.

Please come meet these three older, but amazing, dogs - they still have so much unconditional love left to give someone!
