Animal Aid Society

Animal Aid Society A happy place for dogs in transition between homes. Volunteer run since 1971. Animal Aid Society is an all-volunteer organization!

On average, the AAS volunteer force contributes 900 hours of every month, which translates to just under $275,000 annually in donated labor. Everyone from the daily dog walkers, the marketing team to the board members donates their time to create a safe haven for homeless dogs. That means that AAS is able to invest 100% of all donations and fundraising monies to provide for the dogs in their care.

To encourage this passion in future generations, AAS partners with community groups (scouts and athletic teams) to create volunteer and educational opportunities for local teens and young adults. Families with children are encouraged to come and walk dogs in their park-like facility as a bonding experience and volunteering opportunity all rolled into one. The rescue strongly believes that the connection and interaction of volunteers with the animals results in a higher level of healing for both the volunteers and the animals. From walking and socialization to fundraisers and adoption events, volunteers are integral to the day-to-day operation of the rescue. Our amazing Tinsel shines bright every single day! She is just under a year old and, while she is soft and snuggly, she is not a tiny puppy! But that just means there is more to love!

We had Tinsel in a playgroup with another larger puppy - but one with even more energy. - and that girl came on a bit too strong and Tinsel is still getting over it. It was like she felt bulldozed - too much, too soon - and she is still recovering from it!

We now have her play with much calmer dogs and she is slowly coming around. She definitely looks to the people with her for reassurance and safety. But it is all very endearing and only makes you love her more!

Tinsel and her now-adopted sister were found in the western part of the state - they could only be kept outside so we were thrilled to be able to take them and find them a fabulous new family. Please help us by sharing her story and coming to visit her!

Tinsel is so soft and even though she is bigger, all she wants to do is snuggle up to you and lean into you! She adores people and has yet to meet a stranger! Please help her begin the rest of her life - she is so deserving of it!

Tinsel and her friends are available to meet every single day - rain, snow or shine - from 9am-12pm! Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton VA.

These three puppies have experienced so much loss and suffering in their young lives, yet each one is so full of love, soft, snuggly affection, and joy... they're breaking our hearts and WE NEED YOUR HELP giving them the happily ever afters they all deserve. We've introduced all three to very young children, senior citizens, and other dogs -- each puppy was as gentle and cuddly as could be. Each would make a loyal companion and a fun but never-too-rough playmate!
At just a few weeks old, Mimosa, Mayflower, Walnut, and Sweet Potato were dumped in the streets by their human, left to fend for themselves. They survived that ordeal and found their way to us through a fabulous rural rescue.
But, when they arrived at Animal Aid, we discovered they all had Parvo. Despite immediate medical intervention, Sweet Potato didn't survive.
Mimosa, Mayflower, and Walnut spent five days in the hospital and bravely fought their way back to us. Now they're healthy and so ready for the next chapter of their lives.
We thought we had found that for Walnut -- he was adopted... and returned. Twice. Once for not getting along with cats, and the second time because of a person's allergies. In the home, Walnut was affectionate, snuggly, never destructive, and nearly housetrained! He loved playing with other dogs, too.
So, in their 5 months of life, Mimosa, Mayflower, and Walnut lost their original home, had to survive on the streets, lost their sister, Sweet Potato, endured a horrible disease, and, on top of that, Walnut lost two more homes. THIS HAS TO STOP -- these three puppies need a new start! Give one a home, and he or she will fill it with love and gratitude. All three are smart, eager to learn and please, very affectionate, playful but not rough or destructive, and good with young kids. They love playing with other dogs their size (about 40 pounds) or larger, but need a home with no cats. Come visit Walnut, Mimosa, and Mayflower any day, including weekends and holidays, between 9am and noon, no appointment necessary. They're waiting for you at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

Straight from Bluey to you, please help us welcome our two fabulous heelers, Daniel and Trooper!

These two adorable boys were found as strays and brought to us by another shelter. They are estimated to be a year old, weigh about 50lbs. and are not a bonded pair!

Daniel and Trooper have brought their carefree and joyful attitudes with them and we are in love! They have never met a stranger and love to snuggle!

They were staying outside all night in these cold temps and not going in their rooms, so we built man caves for each of them (and they still have complete access to their apartments). Trooper loved his and appreciated the coziness, while Daniel also loved his but thought it was more fun to stand ON TOP of his!

Please SHARE their stories and come meet these amazing boys - Daniel and Trooper remind us daily to just live life to the fullest!

Marley sends a big thank you to the middle school kids from The Williams School in Norfolk! They have organized a recycled can drive just for Animal Aid Society and already donated a BUNCH of cans for our pups! We appreciate their initiative and the effort that has gone into their very successful project!

Happy forever homes to our boy Walnut and little tiny Jill!

Just look at the mutual love going on in Walnut's photo! He's one of our miracle pups who was saved from euthanasia AND survived Parvo, now he get's all the love and devotion he deserves.

Jill is in excellent hands with his new family! She has 2 new step-siblings to show her around, although we think Jill will be running that home soon!

Congratulations to all!

The old Italian lady in me weeps for these dogs -- they are so skinny!!!
Jasper and Clifford the Big Red Dog were both found as strays and transferred to us from an overcrowded rural shelter.
They're the type of skinny that reminds you we have bones in our heads, the type where you're almost afraid to give pets and rubs because there are so many sharp angles and pointy bits.
But spend a few minutes with Jasper and Clifford the Big Red Dog (PLEASE -- they absolutely LOVE company), and you'll see that far more agonizing than the pain of starvation for these friendly, social pups was the pain of loneliness and fear. These sweet guys, who clearly spent a lot of time being hungry, would rather spend time with you than eat (bonus if they can do both at once, though!!). These guys will raise their heads up from their bowls to make sure their new best friend hasn't left, and if it looks like you may go, they'll stop eating entirely to lean against you and snuggle. Whatever hardships they endured, their spirits are strong and their hearts are full of gratitude and love.
We'll get Jasper and Clifford to a healthy weight, but WE NEED YOU to get them home! They're young, healthy hound mixes. Clifford is, well, big, and Jasper isn't as big, but both are equally deserving of a happily ever after.
Jasper is in foster and can be seen by appointment -- please email [email protected]. Clifford the Big Red Dog is waiting to meet you at the shelter any day between 9am and noon, including weekends & holidays, no appointment necessary. He's at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

Three times, Daisy got a taste of the good life.
And, despite being a very good, loyal, and loving girl, three times, it was snatched away.
Four-year-old Daisy joined us 2.5 YEARS ago -- she was chasing the family cat, so the family gave her up.
She was adopted and absolutely flourished in the home -- housetrained, affectionate, calm... but sadly, the adopters discovered that Daisy needs to be an only pet. Daisy was getting into fights with the other dog. We also learned that Daisy is absolutely TERRIFIED of small children -- something about the unsteady way they walk and the sounds they make just registers as "danger" to Daisy!
So, Daisy was returned yet again, but this time we knew -- no other pets, no small children.
We found her a home with a retired couple, and for a year, Daisy was living the dream... a very good girl with a very good life. Every day, Daisy showed her people how grateful she was to be theirs!
But then Daisy's family moved and put her in a situation where she was surrounded by small children and off-leash with other dogs. The dogs fought, the children were scared, and Daisy was returned.
Daisy is a medium-sized, healthy, SOFT, wiggly, lean-into-you-and-fall-into-belly-rub-position, wiggly, affectionate bundle of resilience and patient hope. There's just a calm tranquility about her -- she KNOWS her person or persons are out there, and she's ready to fill their home with joy. Daisy is housetrained and loves leisurely leash-walks. Her favorite activity is snuggling.
Our awesome trainer is spending time with her, and will provide training sessions in your home, at no cost to you, if you adopt Daisy!
PLEASE SHARE THIS POST and come meet Daisy -- 2.5 YEARS is way, way too long to call a shelter home.
Daisy would love to meet you any day between 9am and noon (including weekends & holidays). She's at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

Let Bob check your boxes! Bob checks all of our boxes and we bet he'd check yours as well!

Bob came to us as a stray, literally bursting through the bushes surrounding our Shelter, as if he was late to a party. And he has stayed at our party for 122 days, far too long.

But in those 122 days, a more complete picture of Bob has emerged. Despite not being able to be caught when he was loose in Buckroe, he adores people!

And despite barking at some of the dogs around him, he is actually a friend to many of them. When we need to test another dog, Bob is our first choice to pair them with because he is calm and gracious.

But here's one of the most exciting things we have learned about Bob - he is the favorite of our trainer. He absorbs new things like a sponge and is constantly wanting to learn and please. He realizes now that when we have to put him back in his run, it's only because time has run out at that moment, but he knows we'll be back.

Bob is definitely the life of our party but we are ready for him to join your party! He is a gem and any family would be lucky to have him!

Bob is available to meet every single day from 9am-12pm, rain or shine!

How has your life changed in the past year and a half?
Ups and downs? Joys and sorrows? Stress and peace?
All of the experiences that keep things interesting, that make life real!
Well, in the past year and a half, nothing has changed for Max.
He arrived at Animal Aid over 550 days ago, and still he waits, desperately lonely, bored, and losing hope.
Our amazing volunteers do their best to keep Max's spirits up -- they bring him new toys, take him for rides and walks, wrap him up in blankets and take naps with him (Max is one of the snuggliest dogs you'll ever meet), but nothing can overcome the crushing monotony of life in a cage.
Max recently began working with our trainer, and has demonstrated that he's so smart, and so eager to learn and please!! Adopt Max, and Animal Aid Society will cover continued training sessions at your home to address Max's quirks -- he can be anxious around strangers, and he's a big boy who can do big tugs on a leash.
Max is stunningly gorgeous, with the most soulful brown eyes. Look into them, and they'll tell you everything there is to know about Max -- he NEEDS to be loved. More than anything, he just wants to belong. Please bring him home, and help show him how.
Max would love to meet you any day between 9am and noon. He'd do best in an adult-only home with no other pets (Max loves playing with other dogs, but he can get protective of his humans, so living with other dogs may be tough). He's been waiting way too long at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

Believe it or not, there is something even MORE special than two of our guests going to the same home this week! Sweet Muffin and little adorable Ollie are going home to a third AAS alumni - HOOPER! The adopters have moved into a new home and wanted to fill it with love, and here they are! Muffin, Ollie and Hooper also have a big sister named Nova to help show them the ropes.
Lovely Lola has her forever home with a family that fell for her immediately, and she has a big sister to play with as well! Bouncy Lola will be a great addition to this happy family.

We are so happy for all involved, what a great way to start a new year of adoptions!

Mika really is simply the best and he just wants to please you. Your heart melts when he looks up at you with his beautiful eyes.

Our trainer has been working with Mika and we've seen how smart he is. He will hop up on the bench and patiently wait for the next activity. And again, he hits you with those eyes and you just want to scoop him up and go cuddle somewhere!

Mika has been with us for 138 days and we just don't understand why. True, he doesn't love certain dogs but he has a blast with some dogs. He needs to be with older kids, only because he has a tendency to herd, as his breed does, and younger kids may not enjoy that!

But the love, the snuggles and the devotion Mika offers are second to none! So many volunteers love to just hang out with Mika - he's so calm and adorable.

Please SHARE Mika's story so we can have the best chance of finding his new family! And come meet this amazing boy - he waits so patiently every single day, hoping this will be the day his new life will begin!

At Animal Aid, we rung in 2025 with not one, but FIVE New Year's Babies!
Five perfect puppies, full of hope and wonder, ready to help you sniff out all the joy in 2025 (and beyond)!
This is a special crop -- each one is smart, but smart in a "I will learn how to please you" way, not a figure out how to do all the mischief way! Each one is snuggly and affectionate -- despite some rough beginnings, they all look to humans for comfort and love.
Beyond those similarities, each one is a unique soul:
Tinsel is a big teddy bear of a Shepherd mix. At just 9-months old, she was rescued from an outdoor pen. She's a little nervous at first, but once she realizes you won't hurt her, oh, the hugs!!!
Walnut, Mimosa, and Mayflower are our miracle puppies. They were dumped on the street by their original owner. We transferred them here from an overcrowded rural shelter -- and discovered they had Parvo. These pups fought so hard for a chance at life. Their sister, Sweet Potato, didn't make it, but now Walnut, Mimosa, and Mayflower are a happy, healthy 6-months old, and so ready to go home. These siblings are competitive -- each one is determined to be the most snuggly!
And, sweet Blue, just 18 weeks old, was abandoned at an emergency vet. She had sustained an injury to her leg, and her owners brought her in for treatment two weeks later! They wouldn't pay for it, so we got custody and two of our fabulous volunteers saw her through a December surgery. Blue was able to keep her leg -- and she never lost her spirits! She's a sweet, cuddly baby who loves couch time, cats, and other dogs! Blue is in foster as she finishes rehab.
So, Blue's not at the shelter now, but Tinsel, Walnut, Mimosa, and Mayflower are here, waiting to meet you! No dog should be in a shelter, but shelter life is particularly hard for puppies -- they need to explore and learn, to understand they are loved and special. If you have the time to help them understand that, please visit our New Year's babies any day between 9am and noon, including weekends and holidays, at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

Imagine having to PAY a hunter to take one of his dogs, that was frequently getting loose, so that she may have a better life. So that she may get medical care, stop being bred and BE FED MORE THAN TWICE A WEEK.

That dog is Grace and the good Samaritan is her foster. Grace's foster was determined to get this sweet girl proper care and a one-way ticket away from the hunter. The foster is not able to keep Grace long-term so we are trying to find the perfect family for Grace!

Grace is a shy, but sweet, 5-year-old Beagle. You can tell she is beginning to savor her good life and is ready to make the most of it! She is being treated for ear infections but is, remarkably, heartworm negative.

Since Grace is in foster, all you have to do is email [email protected] to set up a time to meet her!

A caring lady paid $450 for Grace's freedom - please spread the word so we can now help her find an amazing home!

When a good dog gets adopted and then returned by a good family, we're very sad, but we get some good information.
In Walnut's case, we've learned that he cannot go to a home with cats.
Walnut is a sweet, soulful survivor -- a 5-month-old puppy who beat Parvo and who's SO ready to live the life he bravely fought to keep!
Walnut loves everyone -- humans of all ages and dogs who'll chase and tug with him, but he needs a home without cats.
He'd love an active family (bonus if there's a playful canine buddy) to help him learn and burn energy and be the amazing little nut he was meant to be!
Walnut's initial adopters said he was almost housetrained, an expert cuddler, and never destructive (except for shoes, but hey, shoes are uniquely tasty).
He's a smart, affectionate puppy who so earnestly wants to please you and earn your praise!
The way his whole butt wiggles when you say, "good boy!"... he definitely is one of the goodest!
Please come meet Walnut any day between 9am and noon (including weekends and holidays).
He would love to snuggle with you and do everything he can to bring you joy.
Walnut is waiting to go home at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
PLEASE: like this post, share this post, spread the word, and help make 2025 the year these dogs go home!
Each of our dogs is a masterpiece, and we have the privilege of spending time with them every day.
But that privilege is heartbreaking, because while each pup is unique, they all share a single dream -- a person or persons to call their own.
They all want to go HOME.
Some, like Finn and Bullfrog, need special homes to accommodate their special needs, but they are special in the most wonderful ways!
Others, like Sarah, just want a soft place to lay their head.
We have joyful, playful, cuddly puppies, like Tinsel, Walnut, Mimosa and Mayflower.
We have fabulous, friendly adults like Yoyo, Lola, Ollie, Muffin, and Marley.
We have big, bold (but surprisingly snuggly) Max, and sweet Daisy who just wiggles with delight when you come near!
We have Bob, a senior who thinks he's a young dude, and Buddy, a young adult with an old soul.
We have Mika, a Border Collie Mix who squeaks and spins with delight when he sees a friend, and Matilda, who's favorite time of day is when a volunteer comes and reads to her.
And we have more on the way.
Together, we can make 2025 the year their dreams come true.
If you're adding a furry friend to your family (or know someone who is) - PLEASE ADOPT!
Love dogs, but not able to adopt right now?
Come volunteer! Our all-volunteer staff ranges in age from 18 to 84 -- everyone's welcome: https://www.animalaidsociety.org/volunteer/
Our amazing pups are patiently waiting for their real lives to begin. Let's make that happen!
Let's make 2025 a very happy New Year!
Animal Aid Society is located at 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA. Visiting hours are daily (including weekends & holidays) from 9am to noon.

At nearly 4 minutes, this is long for a social media video. But that is what it takes to show all of our guests who were adopted in 2024! What a fantastic year full of unconditional love, tail wags and sloppy kisses. Please take the time to watch and celebrate these pups finding their forever homes.

Animal Aid Society would not be possible without the support of our all-volunteer work force, our donors, adopters, fosters and the community of dog lovers who like, comment and share our social media posts. Let's make 2025 a banner year for adoptions! Thank you for all you do.

Buddy was clearly named after the only thing he wants in the world, and the one thing he's absolutely devastated to be without -- a buddy all his own.
Buddy was the constant, devoted companion of an elderly man who recently passed away.
In the weeks following his person's funeral, Buddy warmly greeted all the friends and family members who came to handle the estate, but mostly, he sat on his person's favorite chair, waiting for his buddy to come home.
Nobody could take Buddy in, so now he's here, lonely and confused.
It's very clear that Buddy is mourning the loss of his person and his home. He just looks so sad, and he cries when he's alone.
Buddy is so grateful when we sit with him. He's calm, gentle, and just so happy to be spoken to or petted. We tell him everything's going to be ok, that his forever person or family is coming.
PLEASE help make everything ok for Buddy! If you're looking for a chill, easy-going, affectionate companion, Buddy is waiting for you! He needs to go home and find a new chair to sit in, or next to, with his forever buddy by his side.
Buddy is a 4-year-old hound mix, about 58 pounds (but he could stand to lose a few of those pounds -- a New Year's Resolution Buddy!).
Buddy would love to meet you any day between 9am and noon (including weekends and holidays). He's at Animal Aid Society, 80 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, VA.

To us, every donation matters and every donation makes a difference.

Whether monetary or donations of supplies, we gratefully accept your help.

With monetary donations, we have been able to keep our facilities up to code with the State. We have been able to upgrade all of our runs and apartments for our dogs. Our roofs have all been upgraded as have our HVAC systems.

Medically, we have been able to help over 20 dogs this year conquer heartworms and be able to live life to the fullest. We have helped three puppies overcome Parvo. A few dogs have had life-changing surgeries. And ALL of our dogs have had first-rate medical care.

With supplies, we have been able to help not just our dogs but dogs from other shelters. Whatever we are not able to use, we offer to smaller shelters to help in their efforts to reach as many dogs as possible.

In 2025, we look forward to the completion of our small dog section - there are so many small dogs in need of rescue but they need runs that accommodate their size and needs.

So thank you for helping us, in ways big and small, as we could not do any of this without you!

Thank you also for your words of encouragement - they make all the difference for us. Our days are long, and sometimes heartbreaking, so your kind words and lots of sloppy kisses from our beloved dogs keep us going!
