Goodmorning from the babies.

Today they are one week old! Momma is doing spectacular, babies are round and plump.

I suspect i have one red, one red with black ticking (sashige), and POSSIBLY two Ays sesame puppies. I am not entirely sure yet about them but it looks promising. Time will tell.

We hope that at least two of these babies get held back for prospect but its to early to assess that. 🀞

This is a breeding i had been planning for a long time and it has finally come to fruition!

My fingers are tightly crossed that there will be some show prospects to keep back here.

Both dogs come from exceptional pedigrees with gorgeous and well known dogs in Japan.

We also have some very lucky and wonderful pet homes already pre-picked with amazing people.

Look at that, we got a snazzy presentation poster. Thank you Tobitatsu Shiba Inu for the beautiful poster.

These two are the light of my life, I have never felt so attached to two little puppies before. In a few weeks, they will be 6 months old! They will be starting their journeys soon into dog showing and hopefully so much more!

I am always so thankful to my good friend .shibainu for allowing me to use Senzo for my first litter. He has gifted me two promising puppies that really are pushing in the direction I want to take my program moving forward. I will always be working to strive towards the NIPPO standard above all and I think both of these girls (especially Byakko) take me a step closer to that ideal.

Very proud to have Senzo handled by Tobitatsu and Kokuryuu Shibas! What a blessing! I have no words how deeply I appreciate having them as friends in my life.

Ch. Rankyu Go Hidden Cascade

Senzo finished his AKC Championship yesterday at the Minneapolis Kennel Club show in Shakopee, MN with a 3 point major!

So honored to be the one handling his lead to his two majors and final points he needed! He is owned by my good friend Katana Wolf, who runs Bonsai Wolf Japanese Dogs!

PSA from a breeder:

If you are truly serious about someday owning a Shikoku, you may want to read this. In North America, there are very few breeders and those breeders are mostly concentrated along or near the West and East coasts. If you are more centrally located in North America, you likely won’t have a breeder near you at this time. That is not an issue as these breeders are quite used to shipping their puppies all over the continent.

It is also important to understand that most Shikoku breeders are producing 1-2 litters per year, often less. With the average litter size being about 4 puppies, there aren’t many Shikoku puppies to go around each year. Now consider that from each litter it is highly likely that the breeder keeps one puppy and/or sends one more to other breeders, further reducing the amount available for pet homes. Inquiries about puppies greatly surpass the number of puppies available.

All breeders have life obligations beyond their dogs, whether that is their jobs/careers, their families, or whatever other commitments that people tend to have. They are regular people, just like you. Responding to inquiries and conversing with the public is not always high on their priority list at any given moment. If you reach out to a breeder and don’t get a quick response, don’t worry about it. Most breeders maintain a waitlist and advise prospective homes to be prepared for about a 2 year wait. Since we already established there is a lack of supply, it’s clear these breeders don’t need to respond to inquires with urgency. If you reach out and move on due to lack of response, the breeder will likely be unaffected. If you reach out in an appropriate way, and your message doesn’t get lost to spam or junk folders, you will eventually get a response.

Before reaching out to a breeder, please be prepared; do your research on the breed at a minimum. We as breeders will prefer you know a little about what you are inquiring about. Thoughtful introductions are good, but we also don’t need multiple paragraphs about you and your dog ownership experience. When we respond, we will ask for the information we find relevant. If you reach out asking if there are any puppies available and what is the price, you’re likely going to appear uneducated on the breed and will not be making a good first impression. The same could be said if you exude a sense of entitlement; you aren’t owed anything from a breeder just because you have money to spend or that you believe you would be a good owner for a Shikoku. At the end of the day, most breeders are going to want to send their dogs to people they can get along with, as we care about these dogs for the rest of their lives. I personally love getting updates from my puppy owners regularly and knowing exactly how those dogs are doing. If we feel we are going to dread conversing with you, your chances of getting a puppy from us will greatly decrease.

This has been a long post and I could easily add more to it. Ultimately, I hope people find this helpful and educational.

Dog breed preservation is important for several reasons:

1. Cultural and Historical Significance: Many dog breeds have a rich cultural and historical significance. They are often tied to specific regions, countries, or communities, representing their heritage and traditions. Preserving these breeds helps maintain cultural diversity and celebrates the historical connections we have with our canine companions.

2. Genetic Diversity: Preserving dog breeds helps ensure genetic diversity within the canine population. Each breed possesses unique genetic traits that make them well-suited for specific purposes, whether it's herding, hunting, guarding, or companionship. By preserving these breeds, we can maintain a diverse gene pool, which is essential for overall breed health and vitality.

3. Breed-Specific Characteristics: Different breeds have distinct physical and behavioral characteristics that make them desirable for certain tasks or lifestyles. Preservation ensures that these traits remain consistent over time, allowing individuals seeking specific traits, such as temperament, size, or coat type, to find the right fit for their needs.

4. Working Dogs and Purpose-Bred Breeds: Many dog breeds were developed for specific jobs or tasks, such as search and rescue, assistance work, hunting, herding, or police work. Preserving these breeds ensures that future generations can continue benefiting from their specialized skills and abilities.

5. Responsible Ownership: Preserving dog breeds goes hand in hand with responsible ownership. By maintaining breed standards and promoting responsible breeding practices, we can encourage responsible ownership and discourage unethical practices like indiscriminate breeding, puppy mills, or the creation of designer breeds.

6. Health and Well-being: Breed preservation promotes responsible breeding practices aimed at producing healthy and genetically sound dogs. By preserving breed standards and promoting health testing and screening, breeders can reduce the prevalence of genetic diseases within specific breeds, ultimately enhancing the overall health and well-being of these dogs.

TLDR; Dog breed preservation is vital for preserving cultural and historical heritage, genetic diversity, breed-specific characteristics, working and purpose-bred breeds, responsible ownership, and the overall health and well-being of our canine companions.

As a breeder, it is important to have a critical eye and properly assess your breeding stock as well as what you are producing. Acknowledge both strengths and flaws to be able to produce quality dogs. Refusing to see flaws and only see strengths is called kennel blindness. Selective breeding requires a strategy. No dog is perfect, but you need to be able to know what you are working with and how to better it. Preserving a breed requires a lot of thought, learning, and understanding.

PSA if a breeder says β€œi dont breed for show dogs” its just another way of admitting they dont care about the breed and just wants to line their pockets. A show dog and pet dog are BOTH pets.

A show dog is simply a dog who has been in the ring to be evaluated as quality breeding stock, a dog that comes from lines of dedicated, careful, and planned breedings, ….a dog that follows its breed type.

Showing dogs is not for funsies and giggles, its purpose is to prove your dog is structurally sound and matches how the breed its supposed to be. If you are breeding purebred dogs with no goal, pride, and intention you have no business breeding.

Its a breeders duty to show they are producing healthy and quality puppies, to set up the breeds future for success.

If a breeder tells you they have β€œhealthy and quality puppies” but haven’t even provided OFA tests or stepped foot in the ring, they are full of s**t.
