How To Tell The Signs Of Heat Stroke In You Dog

Signs of overheating which can lead to heatstroke in dogs

Rapid panting
Bright red tongue
Curled tongue
1) When the tongue gets wide at the tip, your dog is getting hot.
2) When the tip curls UP, the dog needs to begin the cooling down process. Stop exercise, allow dog to rest in a cool place.
3) When the tongue curls up and IN like a hot dog bun, the dog is in danger of overheating, and dog should be removed from the heat, stop all exercise and watch for others symptoms.
Dog need medical attention when symptoms regress to include ~Wide eyes
Thick saliva
Staggering
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Coma

Someone always blinks in a group photo that's why we take multiple pictures, but this cute girl definitely gets your attention regardless. It's bitter sweet on graduation days our clients are moving on to successful management with their dogs and we don't get to see them as often.

I love when my clients other furry family members come to lessons. It's important in a household that all our dogs are expected to act in a well trained manner. At Bolo K9 we don't charge extra for additional family pets to attend as long as each pet has his or hers own handler.

As the temperatures are rising, it's important to know how to keep your dog cool. I often talk about this tip with my clients, and I feel like it is not always information that people know. Dogs do not sweat, so they cool down through ears and paws.

To cool your dog dog when they get too warm, use rubbing alcohol and put it behind the dog’s ears and on its stomach or pads of its feet. Rubbing alcohol cools the dog faster than water because it evaporates a lot faster, and that helps draw the heat out of the dog.

Get yourself some rubbing alcohol and keep it with your dog first aid.
In your car or with your p**p bags, pack a bunch of alcohol swabs!

This might be the seconds you need when a dog is at risk of overheating.

DURATION, DISTANCE, DISTRACTION! Before you try to overload your dog and get frustrated make sure you have successfully achieved each D before adding in another. You can't expect your dog to be successful off leash, if they are unable to hold a command.

In shaping exercises, the dog must figure out what behavior to offer in order to elicit a treat or reward from his handler. It might be a simple behavior such as a “sit,” or it might be a complex cognitive challenge like “seek” in which the dog must find and object or person. What's in your bowl must be better then mine.

We took Milo in as a foster he was riddled with anxiety and you couldn't trust him near a door he would bolt. Once chased him across a highway, I didn't think he would make it a year without getting out and getting hurt or worse. However we continued to work with him and now he walks himself and waits to load. #offleashk9training

I often use my own dog Repo for distraction work with clients and there is absolutely nothing he loves more then getting to work with new clients and show off. Things have been slow and he hasn't been able to work as much as he would like. This was his reaction to me setting the car back up for the dogs to load.
