You were scheduled to die today. You were given a sedative. You were walked down a hall into a private room and you fell asleep. You didn't know what was happening. You didn’t know if you would ever wake up. There was a final plea by the shelter to a message group with only a handful of overwhelmed and overfull and under funded rescues in it, begging to save you... there was silence. Deafening heart wrenching silence.
What you didn’t see or know was that there was one rescue group who all morning was on call after call after call with random vets, with other rescues, posting your photo, begging fosters, calling, calling, calling and praying that we would find a way. That one of our staff ran to the room you were at while you were sleeping and begged them to wait while we were on hold with our only and final option.... they waited. "She's in the euth room now do we have anything? Give us five more minutes, please..."
Minutes felt like hours and finally they said yes.... our rescue coordinator sent the tag, and you were saved. That is how we met. You were just a number not even a name. The next up on the "list". You woke up in our rescue coordinator's car and were driving to our vet where you’ll get all your vaccines and whatever other medical you need and you will wake up to see tomorrow.
Please know no one ever wanted you to die, in fact everyone within the shelter was waiting, hoping, even praying someone, just one rescue would be the "yes we can help" to stop the walk. Without a foster or adopter or rescue your life would've ended. And when so many more animals come into the shelter than leave shelter, then there are no other options...
That was this morning from 9am to 11am. A frantic mad rush by so many people who came together to save her life and the life of all the others on the list. That was just a glimpse of what we all do nonstop to try to save even just one single soul who did nothing wrong other than be too big, or too strong, or not a specific breed, or have a cough or anything else someone else deemed unadoptable and made her the top of the list.
Healthy beautiful wonderful dogs are at risk of dying every single day due to over crowded shelters. We need fosters more than ever. We take so many risks with every dog we pull. If you foster a dog that is in our care, that we know in our barn that literally opens up a spot to save another life we pull from the kill shelter and save another life at that shelter. Three lives saved just by one foster.
Meet Fayola. She was supposed to die today. We could not let that happen. She was MEANT to live. She was BORN for a reason and we could not let her die in vain. She’s in temporary boarding now to save her life which comes at a huge cost.
Please share her story to help us find her a foster. You can apply at alwaysandfurever.org/forms. She was dog tested and was non reactive to other dogs.
Also now more than ever we need donations to continue our mission. We took over 100 animals in a few weeks to stop the euth list at Wichita Animal Shelter. Please, it is never free to save a life. We could not keep pulling off death row without your amazing support.
You can apply to foster at alwaysandfurever.org/forms, they need you, we need you and once you open your heart to another rescue your life will be changed forever.
