Curious what a typical day of training for a Day Training dog might look like? Check out our new friend Walter's first day training with Victoria and Palestina at Day Training last week!
Every pup's owner will get a detailed email with information on what exercises we worked on and what they need to do for homework for the week, as well as an adorably curated video of the highlights of each skill we work on. Day Training is a very hands on training expereince for the owner! It is imperative that skills are worked on at home and not just in the training center for the dog to be able to perform the skill in multiple environments, also called Generalizing the skill.

Training a dog will have it's ups and downs. You'll have your days where the pup just gets it right away and then sometimes when they struggle. Even during a session you may have a few great reps and then the puppy you are training gets a taste of the zoomies but STILL ends up in the right spot where you need them to be. Sunny the viszla puppy is learning Place here. Trainer Palestina was working on building up some distance with the place mat and Sunny got VERY excited during the process.

Day Training offers a unique opportunity for us to take your pup out in real life scenarios and practice skills they learn in our training facility.
Here Zora is working on so much in this short video with trainer Vic. She is learning impulse control, attention to handler skills, relaxation in public, and socialization with new smells and sounds. Working in new environments helps your dog build fluency to their behaviors. Great job Zora!!

Let's talk about appropriate play between dogs!
You've heard us say it- socializing your dog with other dogs does NOT include heading to the Dog Park. Why though?
Dogs, especially when young, can struggle to regulate their emotions in play. It's easy for a dog to increase their excitement higher and higher and when that happens their manners go out the window and they can turn in to bullies to other dogs. When you have a new dog who is learning to play, allowing them to interact with dogs who are not playing appropiately can have long lasting consequences on your dog's future interactions with dogs. Poor experiences can result in on leash reactivity, dog to dog aggression, and over all poor social manners with other dogs.
Appropriate dog play should include give and take between the interacting dogs. For example, they should take turns on who is chasing who. They should have frequent breaks where they disengage from one another. This can look like sniffing the ground, shaking their whole body, or even a calm pause where the dogs look away from one another. Polite invitations to play can include a play bow or offering their back end to the other dog. The way the other dog responds is also important. If the receiving dog looks away with a lip lick or walks away, that is a dog that is not interested in engaging in play. Gently redirect your dog and don't force the interaction.
How many polite signals and play moments can you spot in this video between Toby and Tuukka? Let us know what you see in the comments! π
Check out our upcoming Puppy Happy Hours for your young dog to experience well monitored, appropriate structured play with other young dogs. Check out our online calendar for upcoming dates!
Day Training pups Theo and Chubbs had a wonderful training exercise today that helped teach both pups that staying calm around another dog is a valuable thing!
So much is happening in this short video- the sights and smells of a new environment are competing with the trainers for where the dogs are paying attention. The dogs like one another and would like to play but instead are being paid for walking calmly (Theo) and laying calmly (Chubbs). The dogs are learning there is so much more value in being polite than in acting wild.
Day Training days give us opportunities to work your pup in a variety of environments where we can focus on specific skills. The variety of environments help your dog learn that the cues we ask of them mean the same thing no matter where they are. This is called generealization.

Enrichment is so important for your pup's mental well being as well as to curb boredom. Day Training pup Ulysses enjoys a snuffle mat as a way to decompress as well as stretch his little puppy brain as he sniffs out his treats and kibble.
What is your pup's favorite enrichment activity?
Did you know? PAWSitively Obedient sells a variety of our favorite enrichment toys including Kongs, Snuffle Mats, and West Paw puzzle toys. Be sure to check out our selection the next time you are visiting one of our training locations!
Trainer Vic is working wonders with Day Training pup Chloe. She is adding distractions, new environments, and different challenges for Chloe to be able to fully understand the behavior she is being taught in the video- Stay.
What is Day Training?
You drop your dog off with us in the morning and your dog will spend one-on-one time throughout the day with a professional trainer. If it is appropriate, there will be time to play with other dogs. If not, they will get play breaks with humans. The importance of day school is to give your dog a place to come learn and get a structured day, so too much play would be counterproductive. Dogs will get plenty of breaks that will require them to rest calmly in a crate, in a play pen, or on a training tether. This allows them time to process their learning and is very important for growing puppies.
At the end of their day you will pick up a tired dog, a progress report with skills we worked on. An email will be sent with video clips of your dog from day training and homework for you to work on at home with your dog!
Day Training is NOT a replacement for the work you do at home with your dog but you will notice progress a lot faster, and behavior sticking better!
