First of 2023. Nice, healthy bull calf for Clem2. Hit the ground and took first steps 1/07/23. He's the second calf in the last two months, so hopefully they're harbingers of better times as we continue to work out of the 2020 wildfire disaster.
Happy Trails to you all.

Just wanted to wish everyone a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a Happy New Year from Darlene and I, and all the critters, here on Coyote Moon. Happy Trails to all.

Even though we are out here in a 31 ft travel trailer, which we are very grateful for, parked in the pasture, joy is all around us. Here is C**t our Livestock Guard Dog and the two month old heifer rejected by her mom and bottle fed. They are truly pals. C**t is a good dog. I was proud of him when I noticed he stopped running and retreaded when the alpaca began to run. His job does not include chasing the livestock. Mutual play is different.

Large group showed up for Thanksgiving, but when Laverne, our alpaca, noticed no one had a mask and none were practicing social distancing, they were rebuffed. Sorry, no stuffing here this year.

Although we're technically still not allowed on our property, we are escorted up to care for the livestock. That means we're doing the 160 mile round trip on a daily basis (which is a literal pain in the butt) and improvising a water tote to get water to the cattle. Our opinon - it's our livestock, it's our responsibility. The next step is convincing the powers-that-be that it would be best if we could just stay on our land. Of course I'll have to figure out something to live in, but heck, I'm even willing to just pitch a tent if I have to. Right now just staying grateful for what we can do, and that we still have the land to rebuild on.

The first remedy this as***le could come up with would be a good swine flue outbreak!? Some of us wouldn't be too happy about having to destroy our own hogs. Hunt and export meat. We have managed to extinguish all sorts of other animals without even trying. Take your swine flue and tuck it firmly up your ass.

Researchers warn that the United States soon experience a massive explosion in the population of feral pigs throughout the country.

This is our house. Terrible? Yes. However, it can be rebuilt. Many things including family pictures will have to live in memory. The good news, all our cattle, pigs, goats horses, dogs, cat and alpaca made it, including a two day old litter of piglets. We were unable to evacuate the Dexters AGHs, alpaca and goats. As we could hear and feel the fire coming fast. We opened all the gates and pulled out with the horses and house pets. Two days later we heard we still had animals on our land. That's when i cried. Now we struggle with how we will get the fences and shelters replaced before winter. We will have calves and piglets the end of October. There is no word from FEMA, and thats ok. We can find something to live in when they let us back in. The critical that we can't replace at the point is tractor with bucket. I think our post hole digger survived. And we need a good flat bed trailer to haul hay. We are not looking for free, but we do need a modest price and a distance we could handle with our old truck. Thats what this fund will be used for as well as fencing and materials to build some shelters. There are a lot of people in need right now. There are a lot of people trying to help. Pray for us all. No one deserves more than any other.

Such a small thing......yet so important

After quite a few goofs, errors, outright mistakes, and an abundance of "well crap"s, I was able to get our deep well pump wired to the generator and get water flowing. The significance? Not only is this the first step in our rebuild but, ever since we evacuated in the midst of the Slater Butte fire storm there have been volunteers that have driven over 100 miles to bring water here every two days. There is no way to express our gratitude sufficiently, but at least this may make their day a little easier.

Don is building us a 50 ft diameter round pen to work our horses in. Of course, we are always operating on a shoestring, so he is using the trees in our back ten acres. A freaken lot of work (I don't remind him he's 67). He cuts the trees, cleans them, seals the bottom to maintain them, digs the post hole, and gets them in. All by hand. Gotta say, I love this man.

Here are the two little Guinea Hog girls that have come to live at Coyote Moon. As yet, no names. It is VERY good to get some new genetics in our melting pot. As you can see by the snout, these girls have the very traditional coned noses. As they get older they will look like they could hide their heads in one of those orange cones you see alerting road work up ahead. These pigs were actually raised the right way. The owner has his foraging in the forest for their meals. He raises his at very little cost. His pigs are also in a lot better physical condition
Very exciting time around here.

I have been away for the past week. Back down in San Diego area to attend two funerals. Dear, dear old friends each 20+ years. It will take some time to truly sort out the total experience. I am looking forward to doing just that in the loving center of the forest in Happy Camp.
